Israel and the United Arab Emirates have reached a historic agreement to normalize relations.
The countries announced the accord on Thursday in a joint statement with the United States, which helped broker the deal.
The statement calls the agreement a "historic diplomatic breakthrough."
It also says delegations from the two sides will meet in the coming weeks to sign deals on investment, security, the establishment of reciprocal embassies and other matters.
US President Donald Trump said, "This deal is a significant step towards building a more peaceful, secure and prosperous Middle East. Now that the ice has been broken, I expect more Arab and Muslim countries will follow the United Arab Emirates' lead."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "This is the greatest advancement toward peace between Israel and the Arab world in the last 26 years and it marks the third formal peace between Israel and an Arab nation."
The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi said that an agreement for Israel to stop its annexation of Palestinian territories, which was reached during a call with Trump and Netanyahu, had been crucial to hammering out the deal.
Political analysts say they expect Trump to tout the deal as a major achievement in the run-up to November's presidential election.

The leaders of Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and others are emphasizing the significance of the agreement between the two Middle Eastern states to normalize ties.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted that it is "a historic day for the state of Israel."
Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi tweeted that the announcement "is important and provides opportunities for further agreements."
He expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for their efforts.
The UAE's official news agency broke the news on Thursday.
It said delegations from the UAE and Israel will meet in the coming weeks to sign deals on such matters as direct flights and the establishment of reciprocal embassies.
Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan tweeted that an agreement had been reached during a call with President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu to stop further Israeli annexation of Palestinian territories. The plight of the Palestinian people is one of the main points of contention between Israel and the Arab nations.
Egypt became the first Arab nation to establish relations with Israel in 1979.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi tweeted that he follows with interest and appreciation the joint statement on the agreement to halt Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories.
He added that he values the efforts of the countries that reached the agreement for prosperity and stability in the region.

Iran's Tasnim news agency has criticized the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates to normalize ties, calling it "shameful."
The Iranian government has not yet officially responded to the deal.
Iran does not recognize Israel and supports militant forces in the Middle East that attack Israeli targets.
Iran maintains some relations with the Arab world but severed ties with Saudi Arabia in 2016.
Iran has been increasingly isolated in the region as a result of the hardline approach employed by US President Donald Trump. Washington is working with Israel to build a wide coalition of nations opposed to Tehran.
Analysts say the agreement between Israel and the UAE will only increase concerns in Iran about its position in the region.

US President Donald Trump has criticized the arrest earlier this week of the founder of the Apple Daily, a Hong Kong newspaper that is often critical of China.
Hong Kong police arrested media owner Jimmy Lai and nine other pro-democracy activists on Monday on suspicion of violating the new national security law for the territory.
The 10 were later released on bail.
Trump said on Thursday that "it's a terrible thing," and he hates to see "what happened to Hong Kong."
He also referred to the executive order he signed last month to end the preferential economic and trade treatment the US had granted Hong Kong for years.
He indicated that the measure would deal a huge blow to China and Hong Kong.
The remark was Trump's first direct criticism of China over Lai's arrest. It followed critical comments by other members of his administration, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

China's military says it has conducted a drill in sea areas including the Taiwan Strait.
A spokesperson for the military said on Thursday that the drill involved a number of different units, and was aimed at strengthening operational coordination among them.
Chinese authorities announced earlier that China would conduct live-ammunition firing drills in seas off the eastern province of Zhejiang, near Taiwan, for three days through Thursday and two days through August 17.
In Thursday's announcement, the spokesperson implicitly referred to the US administration of President Donald Trump.
Without mentioning any country, the spokesperson said that some major powers have recently continued with negative moves over Taiwan, sending a wrong message to pro-independence forces in Taiwan. The spokesperson then said those moves present a serious threat to peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.
On Wednesday, US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar ended his four-day visit to Taiwan. Azar was the highest-ranking US official to visit Taiwan since the US severed ties with Taiwan in 1979. He met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, as well as Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung.
On Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian denounced Azar's visit to Taiwan. He said the United States should not have any illusion about matters pertaining to China's core interests. He said "those who play with fire will get burnt."

People are scrambling to contain the impact of an oil spill off Mauritius, where a Japanese bulk carrier ran aground over two weeks ago.
The incident is leading to growing worries about both the local environment and the economy.
About 1,000 tons of heavy oil are estimated to have spilled from the ship.
Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth says almost all of the oil has been removed from the ship. But the government says it still urgently needs international assistance.
Local volunteers are trying to clear up the oil using handmade bags filled with dried sugarcane stalks to protect the coast.
A local business owner said, "It is really going to affect the communities down there, especially for the fishermen, the local guys that live there. You know, that's how they make money, from tourists."
As the full impact of the spill becomes apparent, reports are coming in about the impact of the pollution on local marine life.

A team of six Japanese experts says it will offer broad support to help Mauritius recover from an oil spill caused by a Japanese ship.
The team started its work on the island nation on Wednesday. The oil leak occurred after the vessel ran aground off the country's coast late last month.
A member of the team, Takechi Keiji, spoke to NHK in an online interview. He is a specialist in anti-ocean pollution measures with the Japan Coast Guard.
Takechi noted that while almost all the oil in the sea has been cleared, the coastline has yet to be cleaned.
He said it is sad a Japanese ship was involved in the incident and that his team hopes to rectify the situation as much as possible.
Takechi added that Japan is considering to dispatch experts in fields such as ecosystem restoration for extended periods of time.
Mauritian authorities are currently denying entry to foreign nationals as part of their efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
But Takechi said international assistance personnel, including UN officials, are allowed in as long as they wear protective clothing for two weeks upon arrival. Their movement within the country has also been limited.
The leader of the Japanese team, Gomakubo Junji, said the coronavirus has had a heavy impact on the Mauritian economy, which relies on tourism. He said measures to rebuild both the environment and the economy should be considered.
The ship is operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. The Japanese company said on Thursday that it believes almost all the remaining oil on the vessel has been removed.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has maintained its assessment of coronavirus infections and medical systems in the Japanese capital, but experts warn that the burden on hospitals is increasing.
The government on Thursday held a meeting of officials and experts to monitor and analyze infection trends over the past week.
The participants agreed to keep Tokyo's infection alert at the highest of four levels for a fifth straight week. The level indicates that infections in the city seem to be expanding.
They said the number of new cases confirmed in the week until Wednesday was similar to that of the previous week, including more than 1,000 new cases over three days.
The average daily number of untraceable cases in the week also remained high, at 201. Experts said infections have spread to all areas of Tokyo and all generations.
Experts also said an increase in the number of inpatients is adding to the burden on medical institutions. They called for active use of accommodations for people with no or mild symptoms.
Experts also cited the need for more hospital beds for coronavirus patients, while maintaining levels of ordinary medical care.
The experts agreed that the medical system appears to need strengthening, as indicated by the second-highest level on a four-tier scale for the system. They maintained the level for a sixth consecutive week.

Koike also asked the government to step up immigration control to prevent the further spread of the virus ahead of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games scheduled for next year.
