Former US Vice President Joe Biden has been officially nominated at the Democratic Party's national convention to be the party's presidential candidate.
Delegates from all the US states and territories appeared on video for a traditional roll-call vote on the second day of the convention. The event is being held mostly online, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Biden participated from his home state of Delaware. He said, "Thank you very very much from the bottom of my heart. Thank you all."
He will give his acceptance speech on Thursday.
Biden has pledged to respect diversity. He says he will reunify the nation, which has become more divided under President Donald Trump.
His running mate, Senator Kamala Harris, is scheduled to speak on Wednesday. She is the first black woman to run for the vice-presidency on a major party ticket.

Authorities in Mauritius have arrested the captain of a Japanese-owned cargo ship that spilled about 1,000 tons of fuel oil into the Indian Ocean.
Officials say Sunil Kumar Nandeshwar, who is from India, was arrested along with his Sri Lankan deputy Tuesday on suspicion of endangering safe navigation.
The bulk carrier Wakashio ran aground in late July on a reef off the coast of the island nation. Maritime transport firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines had chartered the vessel.
Maritime traffic data show that the ship suddenly turned right almost 90 degrees and slowed down about two kilometers off the coast.
Experts believe that the vessel hit something there, causing it to become stranded.
Local media have reported that the crew may have steered the ship close to the shore to get Wi-Fi signals.
The captain and his deputy appeared in court and remain in police custody as the investigation continues.

A second group of experts from Japan is set to leave for Mauritius on Wednesday to help reduce the environmental impact of an oil spill from a Japanese-owned bulk carrier.
The team of seven includes experts from the National Institute for Environmental Studies and the Environment Ministry. They are being dispatched at the request of the Mauritian government to help assess the impact on the local eco-system of the oil leakage from the ship.
The ship chartered by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines ran aground off the Indian Ocean island nation on July 25.
The Japanese government dispatched its first team of six members on August 10, including Japan Coast Guard officials.
The government is showing its continued support for Mauritius to help prevent marine pollution and to protect its environment.

Japanese experts dispatched to Mauritius after an oil spill there say removing oil that spread into a mangrove wetland will be a big challenge.
A Japanese bulk carrier chartered by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines ran aground off the Indian Ocean island nation on July 25, causing the massive spill.
Members of the Japan Disaster Relief team spoke to reporters online on Tuesday. They have been operating at the site since last week.
They said most of the oil that washed ashore has been removed thanks to efforts by local volunteers and others, but that some drifted into the mangrove swamp.
Japan Coast Guard's Nagata Seiichiro said, "Cleaning up wetlands is delicate work. We need to think about ways to minimize the impact on local ecosystems."
The group also said they smelled no oil around the vessel in their survey on Monday, and saw no other major oil spillage.
Japanese private companies are assisting efforts to clean the waters around Mauritius.
A manufacturer in Tokyo developed a special fabric that absorbs surface-level oil.
The firm's Takenoshita Yuki said, "The accident took place in a pristine natural environment. It must be very difficult for local residents to have to go through this. We want to offer our help to them."
The company says the material will be sent along when the second expert relief team from Japan heads to Mauritius.

Japan's exports to China in July rose for the first time in seven months. But the country's overall imports and exports remained sluggish due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Data released by the Finance Ministry on Wednesday show that exports last month totaled 5.37 trillion yen, or about 50.9 billion dollars. That's a drop of 19.2 percent from a year earlier.
Exports to the United States were down 19.5 percent, mainly attributable to a drop in motor vehicles and power generating machines that include aircraft engines. Exports to the European Union also plunged by 30.5 percent.
Meanwhile, exports to China logged an 8.2 percent increase thanks to demand for nonferrous metals, semiconductor machinery and motor vehicles.
Imports also decreased significantly by 22.3 percent year on year to 5.36 trillion yen, or about 50.8 billion dollars.
As a result, Japan recorded a trade surplus of 11.6 billion yen, or approximately 110 million dollars. The trade account balance in July was in the black for the first time in four months.
While stimulus measures appear to be working in motor vehicles and other sectors in China, economic activities are again being restricted in the US and Europe due to a resurgence of coronavirus infections, resulting in sluggish trade overall.

South Korea's government says it will take stronger anti-coronavirus measures in the country's capital and nearby areas amid another surge in infections.
Health ministry officials said on Tuesday that 246 new cases were confirmed on the previous day, mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area. The daily number of newly confirmed cases was over 100 for a fifth straight day.
The officials said that in Seoul, 457 infections have been confirmed among people related to the Sarang Jeil Church in the capital since last Wednesday.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun issued a public statement in Tuesday evening warning that the present outbreak could spread nationwide, and that the country is in a critical moment.
He also said stronger antivirus measures will be imposed from Wednesday for the time being.
Under the measures, churches are to be banned from holding services with worshippers taking part in person, and public facilities such as libraries and museums will be shut down.
With a sense of crisis growing over possible further spreading of infections, Chung promised even stronger antivirus measures if the number of cases continues to rise.

Chinese companies have begun showcasing their anti-coronavirus products at a fair in Shanghai with an eye on expanding into foreign markets.
More than 300 makers of facemasks, protective gear and other items to combat the coronavirus are taking part in the two-day trade fair that opened on Tuesday.
The items include breathable protective gear for medical workers, pattern-designed facemasks, and disinfectant spray devices.
One product that is drawing the attention of overseas buyers is a machine that can produce 120 masks per minute.
A man from Kenya said he is hoping to buy a highly productive mask-making machine.
An official from the machine maker said 80 percent of orders are currently from overseas. The official said his firm hopes to take this opportunity to sell high-quality machines around the world.
Many Chinese makers are seeking markets outside the country, as the domestic mask market is said to be oversupplied.

Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita says he is going to resign. This comes after he was detained by rebel soldiers, who orchestrated a military coup.
Speaking on state television, Keita said that he had made the decision and that he is going to step down from his duties immediately.
Keita also announced the dissolution of Mali's parliament. The announcement came hours after he was detained near the capital, Bamako, along with other government officials.
This turmoil comes amid the continuing insurgency by Islamic extremists in northern Mali. French forces there have been helping the government fight back.
However, this fresh political crisis could affect those operations and allow the militants to gain ground.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hopes his country's commercial aircraft will be allowed to fly over Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates.
Israel and the UAE reached an agreement on Thursday to normalize ties. The Jewish state now hopes to establish various relationships including direct flights with the Arab country.
Netanyahu told reporters at Tel Aviv's international airport on Monday that he is currently working to enable direct flights between Tel Aviv, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which will go over Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia has been a key presence among Arab countries that are hostile to Israel.
Reuters news agency says Saudi Arabia's air space is closed to Israeli airliners. It says that since 2018, Air India has been allowed to fly over Saudi territory on its route between New Delhi and Tel Aviv.
Netanyahu apparently wants to not just shorten flight times but also gain a sign of approval from Saudi Arabia, which has yet to respond to the groundbreaking agreement between Israel and the UAE.

The Palestinian Authority says it will not participate in next year's Dubai Expo in protest against the normalization of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Israel and the UAE last Thursday agreed to normalize diplomatic relations in a deal that was brokered by the United States.
The UAE and other Arab countries have supported the Palestinians in their dispute with Israel and the Palestinian Authority is firmly opposed to the deal.
At a cabinet meeting on Monday, the Palestinian Authority decided to cancel its participation in the Dubai Expo due to open in October next year.
At the meeting, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh denounced the deal by stressing that it goes against the Arab consensus that opposes the Israeli occupation and could encourage the building of further Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories.
The EXPO 2020 Dubai, the first world fair to be staged in the Middle East, was postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
