US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that his administration will begin taking steps to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran over the country's nuclear program.

Trump spoke to reporters at the White House. He said he has instructed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to notify the UN Security Council that the United States intends to restore virtually all previously suspended UN sanctions on Iran.

The State Department issued a statement the same day. It said Pompeo will travel to New York on Thursday to notify the council.

The Trump administration wants to restore the sanctions by using a mechanism in the 2015 nuclear deal. The mechanism is called "snapback."

It allows all the UN sanctions that existed before the deal to be restored, if it is proved that Iran is in violation of the agreement.

The US withdrew from the deal in 2018. Most of the other countries involved have stated that they intend to keep the deal alive.

It is unclear whether the sanctions can be restored.
Russia, China, and some other countries argue that the US has no right to invoke a snapback, since it's no longer a party to the deal.

North Korea's ruling Workers' Party has decided to hold a congress next January to boost efforts to get the economy back on its feet.

The ruling party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Thursday that the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, gave a speech at the plenary meeting of the party's Central Committee on Wednesday.

Kim noted that the country has faced unexpected and inevitable challenges this year.

The committee admitted that the coronavirus pandemic has dealt a blow to the country's economy. It said "severe internal and external situations" have seriously delayed the "planned attainment of the goals for improving the national economy."

It added that living standards "have not been improved remarkably."

The committee decided to convene the party congress for the first time since May 2016.

Kim has pledged to unveil a new five-year economic development plan at the meeting.

It remains to be seen what policies he will lay out on nuclear and missile development and relations with the United States.

Apple has become the first US company to see the value of its shares top 2 trillion dollars -- a phenomenon symbolizing the strong showing of IT-related issues despite the coronavirus pandemic.

On the New York stock market, Apple shares rose on Wednesday for their total value to temporarily exceed 2 trillion dollars.

Apple is now the second company in the world to reach the 2 trillion dollars mark. Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil company Saudi Aramco, achieved that feat shortly after going public last year.

Apple has been expanding its business by stepping up its music and video streaming and other services as well as the sale of its flagship smartphone, the iPhone.

The company's stock plunged temporarily in late March due to the epidemic. But it has recovered vigorously to more than double the bottom hit in March.

The United States has suspended or terminated three bilateral agreements with Hong Kong covering extradition and tax exemptions.

The State Department on Wednesday released a statement to that end. The three accords cover the surrender of fugitives, transfer of convicted prisoners and reciprocal tax exemptions on income from international shipping.

This is in line with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last month to oppose China's new national security law for the territory, which cracks down on anti-government moves.

The State Department's statement reads, "These steps underscore our deep concern regarding Beijing's decision to impose the National Security Law, which has crushed the freedoms of the people of Hong Kong."

The Trump administration early this month froze assets in the United States belonging to Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and 10 other officials from China and the territory.

It will also obligate, starting next month, imported goods produced in Hong Kong to be marked to indicate that their origin is China.

Wednesday's measure is likely to further escalate tension between the United States and China.

Japan's second-largest opposition party, the Democratic Party for the People, has decided to dissolve itself and form a new party through a merger with the largest opposition group, the Constitutional Democratic Party.

The decision came at a meeting of more than 60 Lower and Upper House members of the party on Wednesday.

DPP Secretary General Hirano Hirofumi is to report the development to the CDP on Thursday.

The DPP is to take steps to dissolve itself within the next week or so. It will start canvassing each of its members on whether they are willing to be part of the merger.

CDP Secretary General Fukuyama Tetsuro suggested the merger may bring the number of lawmakers in the new party to at least 150.

Meanwhile, DPP President Tamaki Yuichiro said he will not join the new party. As some other members also remain cautious about the merger, the party agreed to leave it up to Tamaki and Hirano to decide how to deal with them.

Also on the agenda is what to do with a proposal made by Tamaki to split the party, rather than dissolve it.

CDP leader Edano Yukio expressed readiness to form the new party as soon as early September, but the possibility of splitting the DPP may put the plan on hold.

Critics say coordinating terms for a splinter will take time, as the decision relates to how the DPP funds would be distributed.

NHK has learned Defense Minister Kono Taro is arranging a meeting with his US counterpart, Mark Esper, in the US territory of Guam this month.

Sources say Kono is planning to fly to Guam by an Air Self-Defense Force plane on August 29 for talks with Esper at a US Air Force base.

This would be Kono's first overseas trip following one in February to attend an international conference in Germany, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kono and Esper are expected to discuss China's increased activities in the East and South China seas amid the pandemic.

Also on the agenda would be a response to North Korea's ballistic missiles after Japan scrapped a plan to deploy the US-made Aegis Ashore ground-based missile defense system in two locations.

Sources say the talks will be held with full measures in place against coronavirus infection, and Kono will not need to take two weeks self-quarantine after returning from Guam.

The Japanese government has made it mandatory for all arriving nationals to self-isolate for two weeks at home, hotels or elsewhere because of the coronavirus.
