Tokyo reported a record 472 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday. The daily tally in the Japanese capital topped 400 for the second day in a row. That puts the total number of infections in Tokyo more than 13,000.

Tokyo officials say the increase may be due to outings during the 4-day holiday last month.

They are asking people to refrain from eating and drinking in groups. Authorities are also calling on individuals to avoid speaking at close range, even with a few other people.

On Monday, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to ask the owners of karaoke bars and restaurants that serve alcohol to shorten their business hours.

Nationwide, more than 1,500 new infections were reported on Saturday.

Officials confirmed nearly 200 cases in the western prefecture of Osaka. Over 180 were reported in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan.

However amid the pandemic, a Kabuki theater in Tokyo has reopened after five months. Each spectator has to maintain a distance from others. Seats near the runway and those closest to the stage are not being used.

Fans are also being asked to refrain from shouting in the traditional way during a performance. Many regard the act of shouting as one of the delights of watching kabuki.

Musicians and "nagauta" singers are now required to wear custom-made black masks. The seats will also be disinfected after each performance.

A female spectator said, "I hope Kabuki performances will gradually return to normal. Today's show was wonderful."

Kabuki actor Matsumoto Koushiro said, "I know that many people were looking forward to seeing Kabuki, so I'm glad we were able to do this. I hope people will enjoy the new performance."

An aquarium in Okinawa has been temporarily closed after the southern island prefecture declared its own state of emergency amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

Officials at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the town of Motobu say the facility will be closed from Sunday through August 15 to help prevent infections.

Okinawa is seeing a rapid increase in coronavirus cases. The number of daily infections had hit record levels for five straight days as of Friday, prompting the governor to declare an emergency.

Some people were seen walking away from the aquarium on Sunday after finding out that it was closed.

A man from the central prefecture of Shizuoka said he wanted to see the whale sharks, but the aquarium was closed.

A senior aquarium official, Sato Keiichi, said it's hard for them to shut down at the busiest time of the year, but they will work to ensure that many people can visit when the situation is under control.

Some facilities in Shuri Castle Park, another tourist spot in the prefecture, will also be closed from Sunday through August 15.

The coronavirus pandemic is increasingly making uncertain the future of Japan's project to set up integrated resorts that include casinos.

The government had planned to open the facilities sometime in the mid-2020s.

But it postponed the adoption of a basic policy which includes evaluation criteria to select sites. It was to be decided earlier this year.

If it had been decided, local governments that want to build the integrated resorts would have submitted their plan to the government between January and July in 2021 after selecting an operator.

Following the government's decision on postponement of the basic policy, the local governments followed suit.

Osaka Prefecture and Osaka city have decided to postpone the selection of an operator. Yokohama city decided not to announce its plan, including selection criteria of an operator, for the time being.

The pandemic has also affected potential operators of casino-related facilities. They are making less profit owing to a deterioration of business conditions.

A 96-year-old man has become Italy's oldest university graduate. Giuseppe Paterno has been awarded his undergraduate degree from the University of Palermo.

Paterno received his diploma on Wednesday at a special ceremony attended by family members, including his great-grandchildren.

Paterno joined the navy at the age of 20. The World War Two veteran also worked for a railway company.

In 2017, he was admitted to the University of Palermo to study history and philosophy. He took classes along with his much-younger fellow students and wrote papers with his typewriter.

In March, Italy was put under coronavirus lockdown. But Paterno continued to study at home and took his remaining exams online.

Paterno is being praised on social media. Some people say his story shows that it's never too late to study, while others are calling him a Sicilian legend for graduating during the pandemic.

The Austrian town of Salzburg is holding a scaled-down music festival this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Salzburg Festival opened on Saturday with a performance of a Richard Strauss opera, Elektra.

The festival, held every summer in the birthplace of Mozart, features the Vienna Philharmonic and other renowned orchestras. It is marking its centennial this year.

Indoor events with up to 1,000 spectators are being allowed in Austria from Saturday, as the number of coronavirus infections in the country has declined.

The organizers decided to hold the festival in a modified and abbreviated form this year with less than half the usual number of performances.
Social distancing was observed at a public viewing site. A German man said he is keeping a safe distance from others and he is happy he can enjoy the festival this year.

Artistic Director Markus Hinterhauser told NHK that musicians are facing a difficult situation globally, but if the festival goes ahead without any major problems, it can show the world that artistic and cultural events can be held safely.

The festival runs through August 30.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has condemned the Hong Kong government's decision to postpone the territory's Legislative Council elections by a year.

The Hong Kong government on Friday announced that it will postpone the elections that had been scheduled for September, citing the spread of the coronavirus as a reason.

Pro-democracy forces strongly opposed the move, saying it reflects Beijing's intention to prevent them from winning more seats on the council.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Pompeo criticized the decision, saying there is no valid reason for such a lengthy delay.

Pompeo said that if elections are not held in "a manner that reflects the will and aspirations of the Hong Kong people," the territory "will continue its march toward becoming just another Communist-run city in China."

As Beijing continues to strengthen its grip on the territory, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month to end the preferential economic and trade treatment for Hong Kong.

A pro-democracy activist on the Hong Kong police wanted list has identified himself as a US citizen living in the United States.

Hong Kong media reported on Friday that Samuel Chu and five other activists from the territory, who now live in Britain, the US, and elsewhere, have been put on the wanted list on charges of violating the national security law for Hong Kong.

Chu released a remark on social media that he has resided in the US for 25 years. He wrote, "Hong Kong police is targeting a US citizen for lobbying my own government. I might be the first non-Chinese citizen to be targeted."
He said if he is targeted, any American and any citizen of any nation who speaks out for Hong Kong can, and will be, too.

Chu launched a civic group in the United States last year, and has been lobbying the US government to impose sanctions on China.

He says he learned about the wanted list via media reports. It is not known which of his activities put him on the list.

The national security law for Hong Kong even includes targeting activities taken overseas by people other than its residents.

Analysts say the US government could react further against China over Chu's case.

A UN report says North Korea is continuing its nuclear and missile development programs with funds obtained illicitly by carrying out ship-to-ship transfers of goods in violation of UN sanctions.

NHK obtained the report compiled by a UN panel of experts. The panel assessed how far UN sanctions against North Korea have been carried out during the period of six months through July.

The report says North Korea reaffirmed its commitment to retaining and developing its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The report adds that the North conducted four launch tests of short-range ballistic missile systems in March, and has continued to develop infrastructure and capacity for its ballistic missile program.

The report says since March, North Korea has continued to flout Security Council resolutions through illicit maritime exports of coal.

The report states the North has made deliveries of coal and illicitly imported refined petroleum that far exceeded the ceiling set by the Security Council through ship-to-ship transfers.

The report says the North continued to earn income from those illicit transfers.

The UN resolutions required its member nations to repatriate North Korean nationals working abroad by last December. The report says North Korean nationals continued to earn income overseas after that deadline for repatriation as sports players, medical professionals, factory, restaurant, and construction workers.
The Security Council Sanctions Committee has expressed serious concern over the situation reported by the panel.

The committee plans to urge member nations to completely implement the sanctions resolutions.
