The top US expert on infectious diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci says he is confident that a coronavirus vaccine will be ready by early next year.
Fauci, who is helping to guide the US government's coronavirus response, told a House of Representatives subcommittee on Friday he is "cautiously optimistic that we will have a vaccine by the end of this year and as we go into 2021."
Fauci suggested that a safe and effective vaccine could be ready for distribution in 2021, but that a mass nationwide vaccination should not be expected right away. He said there will be a priority list based on recommendations from scientific advisers.
A vaccine being developed in the United States by the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with the pharmaceutical firm Moderna entered a final phase human trial on Monday.
Potential vaccines are also in the final stages of development in Britain and China.
The European Union announced on Friday it has agreed with French drug maker Sanofi that the firm will supply the bloc with 300 million doses of a vaccine.
The European Commission said the envisaged contract with the company would provide for an option for all 27 EU member states to purchase the vaccine.
Separately, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy have formed a group to cooperate in procuring vaccines.
They have arranged for British pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca to provide up to 400 million doses of vaccines to EU countries at original cost.
As of Friday, there have been more than 1.7 million infections in the European Union and surrounding countries. Cases have begun to surge again in some areas, raising concern about a second wave of infections.

US President Donald Trump says he is planning to take action as early as Saturday to ban TikTok in the United States. The globally popular Chinese-owned video app has allegedly raised national security concerns in the country.
Trump was speaking to reporters onboard Air Force One on Friday evening. He said he could use emergency economic powers or an executive order to ban TikTok. He insisted he has the authority.
The Trump administration has been considering action against the operators of the app for possible exploitation of personal information of US users by the Chinese government.
Multiple media outlets report that US tech giant Microsoft is in talks to acquire TikTok. Trump reportedly does not support the move.
The Trump administration has recently been stepping up pressure on China. The escalating conflict between the two countries now includes the popular app.
Other countries around the world have also expressed concerns over TikTok. They could follow the US in banning the app.

The United States has imposed sanctions on another Chinese organization and two individuals, citing alleged human rights abuses against Uighurs and other ethnic minorities.
The Trump administration said on Friday it would impose an asset freeze and travel restrictions on the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, XPCC, as well as the former and current officials.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement that the designations are the latest US measure in an ongoing effort to deter human rights abuse in the Xinjiang region.
He called on all countries to join the US in condemning China's abuse of the human rights of its citizens.
The XPCC was founded in 1954 to defend and develop China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It has since engaged in economic development, administrative work and maintaining security in the region.
Earlier in July, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on four people, including senior Chinese Communist Party officials in Xinjiang.
China responded with similar penalties against four Americans, including senators who are known for their hardline stance against China.

US authorities have charged three young people including a 17-year-old male over the recent hacking of high-profile Twitter accounts.
The attack was exposed on July 15 when the hackers allegedly gained access to official Twitter accounts of well-known people and big-name companies. Fake tweets soliciting investments in Bitcoin were posted on some of those accounts.
In a statement issued on Friday, the US Justice Department and other entities said 3 people, ranging from 17 to 22 years in age, have been charged for suspected fraud and other counts. Two of the suspects live in the US state of Florida, while the other lives in Britain.
The statement said the suspects managed to steal more than 100,000 dollars in Bitcoin in the attack.
Those targeted in the hack include former US President Barack Obama and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been probing the incident.
The hacking of the popular social media platform prompted Twitter to pledge a thorough investigation and further tightening of security.

The operator of Bronx Zoo in New York has apologized for an incident 114 years ago in which an African man was displayed in a "monkey house."
The Wildlife Conservation Society released a statement on its website on Wednesday.
It says Ota Benga, from present-day Democratic Republic of Congo, was exhibited for several days in September 1906.
He was reportedly moved to an orphanage after local black ministers immediately protested the incident. The statement says he took his own life a decade later.
Anti-racism protests continue across the United States following the death of a black man in police custody in May.
The operator of the zoo said it regrets that many people and generations have been hurt by its failure to publicly condemn and denounce past mistakes.
It plans to release records related to the man online for researchers and others.

Hong Kong media say police have put six pro-democracy activists who are currently abroad on a wanted list for allegedly violating a new national security law in the territory.
They reportedly include Nathan Law, a leader of the 2014 Umbrella protest movement who fled to Britain after the legislation took effect on June 30.
It is unclear what exactly the six activists are wanted for. But the reports say they are suspected of inciting secession and colluding with foreign forces.
Law spoke about Hong Kong's human rights situation via video link to a US Congress hearing on July 1, right after the legislation was enacted.
He also continues to call for international support on social media.
The national security law's coverage extends to activities outside Hong Kong. This appears to be the first time it has been applied to people overseas.

The Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency says the country's catch of Pacific saury, a popular autumn delicacy, is expected to fall to a record low this year.
It predicts fewer of the fish will come into Japan's coastal waters compared to last year, which also saw a record-low catch of 45,000 tons. The agency said the saury are expected to arrive about one month later than usual.
It said this year's forecast is less certain because the survey was limited due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Pacific saury stock has recently been on the decline. In July last year, Japan, China, Taiwan and other economies agreed to set an upper limit on catches in the North Pacific, starting this year.
