In the United States, the national convention of the Democratic Party has opened to officially pick its presidential candidate.

Former US Vice President Joe Biden is expected to be nominated on Tuesday.

The party initially planned to bring together members and delegates in Milwaukee, but had to limit the in-person presence due to the pandemic.

Most speeches at the four-day convention are being made online.

Senator Bernie Sanders said, "Together we must build a nation that is more equitable, more compassionate and more inclusive. I know that Joe Biden will begin that fight on day one."

Biden is scheduled to participate remotely from his home state of Delaware and will give his acceptance speech on Thursday.

The party will also approve its platform during the convention, which serves as an election pledge.

The Democrats call for an increase in spending to combat the coronavirus, as well as providing a vaccine to every American free of charge.

President Donald Trump addressed his supporters in Wisconsin in the state where Democrats are holding the convention.

Trump said, "Do you want to crush our economy under the crazy socialist policies of sleepy Joe Biden and his boss, Kamala Harris? Or do you want to quickly rebuild the strongest economy in the history of the world, which we did? We're going to have to do it again. We're going to have to do it again. We're in the process of doing."

Trump will deliver a speech at the White House next Thursday after accepting the Republican nomination.

Economic analysts are expecting Japan to post growth for its gross domestic product in the July-September period despite a historic downturn in the previous quarter.

Japan's Cabinet Office announced on Monday that GDP shrank at an annualized 27.8 percent in real terms in the April-June period compared with the previous quarter.

The figure was far steeper than the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis and the worst since comparable data became available in 1980.

The Cabinet Office projected last month that the country's GDP will contract by around 4.5 percent in real terms in this fiscal year through next March.

The office is now saying to maintain that projection the Japanese economy must expand at an annualized rate of around 13.6 percent for three consecutive quarters.

Many private research firms are forecasting that the Japanese economy will grow in the July-September period, saying that the economy has recovered after the state of emergency was lifted in May. Some even say the economy will grow at an annualized rate of more than 10 percent.

However, Kobayashi Shinichiro, chief researcher at Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting, sees a relatively small growth for the July-September period.

He says that if the economy becomes sluggish from August onward, GDP will grow at very low rate or plunge into the negative territory in the October-December quarter.

The focus is on whether Japan can quickly put its economy back on a recovery track while trying to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

The economic growth of Southeast Asian nations has contracted sharply due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Governments of the major economies in Southeast Asia released their Gross Domestic Product data for the April-to-June quarter.

The data showed that Singapore's economy shrank by 13.2 percent from the same period last year. That's the sharpest contraction since 1976, when comparable data became available.

Thailand's economy shrank by 12.2 percent, the worst since 1998 when the country was hit by the Asian financial crisis. The economy of Malaysia contracted by 17.1 percent, and the Philippines went down 16.5 percent.

The Indonesian economy -- the largest in the region -- shrank by 5.3 percent, its first contraction in 21 years.

Tourism in the region took a huge hit from travel restrictions imposed in response to the pandemic. Personal consumption also plunged as people's outings and business activities were curtailed.

Experts fear that overseas investor money could flee these emerging economies should the situation continue to worsen.

Japan's welfare ministry has set up new sections to support the development and promotion of robots that can assist in nursing care.

The ministry this month opened six bases to support companies developing such robots, as well as 11 consultation centers for operators of nursing-care businesses across the country.

A site in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward is exhibiting about 30 types of nursing-care robots that are under development.

In a model care facility room, there is a large robot. Half of it detaches from a bed and serves as a wheelchair. This device can be operated by one staff member, while two workers are usually needed to move an elderly person from bed into a wheelchair.

Also on display is a device that enables remote conversation between an elderly person and their family members through a tablet. Another robot demonstrates how it can serve trays of food.

These devices can also decrease contacts between people, raising hopes that they can help prevent infections such as coronavirus.

Kataoka Shinichiro is the chief of Future Care Lab in Japan that operates the Shinagawa base. He says robots promoting non-contact nursing care are attracting attention amid the coronavirus outbreak. He also says his lab will work to match the needs of robot developers and care givers.

North Korea's state-run media says the Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party will hold a plenary meeting on Wednesday.

Its stated aim is "to discuss and decide on an issue of crucial significance in developing the Korean revolution and increasing the fighting efficiency of the Party."

The Korean Central News Agency says the decision to hold the meeting was made by the politburo standing committee.

It comes as US-South Korea joint military exercises is scheduled to kick off on Tuesday.

North Korea appears to be strongly opposed to the exercises, and may take countermeasures against the two countries.

This will be the first time the Central Committee has met for a plenary session since last December.

Leader Kim Jong Un delivered a provocative speech then, saying that the country would soon reveal a new strategic weapon.

Protests are continuing across Belarus against Alexander Lukashenko after the results of a presidential vote appeared to give him a sixth term in office.

Lukashenko claimed victory in the August 9 election with 80 percent of the vote. Opponents say the election results are fraudulent. After the election demonstrators took to the streets where they were forcibly dispersed and many detained by the security forces.

But hundreds of thousands of people continued to protest, even at state-run enterprises which are under the control of Lukashenko's government. On Monday, workers at the country's state broadcaster went on strike.

President Lukashenko delivered a speech at a factory in the capital Minsk, stressing that the vote was free of fraud. He was heckled by the crowd with some chanting "get out" and calling on him to step down. The president had to suspend his address momentarily.

Svetlana Tikhanouskaya, his main rival in the election, is now in neighboring Lithuania. In a video message on Monday, she thanked people for supporting her. She said she is ready to act as the national leader.

Amid the rising tension, the leaders of European Union member countries decided to hold an emergency online summit on Wednesday.

EU leaders are expected to express their opposition to violence against citizens, as well as to discuss a plan to impose sanctions on Belarus.

They will also likely talk about Russia, which is ready to offer military support to Belarus if necessary.

The Japanese embassy in Belarus said a Japanese national in his 20s is in custody at a detention facility in Minsk after being captured by authorities last week. Embassy officials are investigating why he was detained, and whether he was taking part in protests.
