North Korean ballistic missile launched, falls outside Japan's EEZ

Japanese government officials say at least one ballistic missile was fired by North Korea, and has likely fallen outside of Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Japanese defense ministry announced that North Korea fired a ballistic missile at around 6:52 a.m. on Tuesday. There have been no reports of damage to vessels or aircraft.

In January, North Korea announced that it had successfully test-fired a solid-fuel intermediate-range ballistic missile. A solid-fuel missile can be fired more quickly than one that uses liquid propellants.

The country repeated the launches of cruise missiles, which can fly for a long time at low altitudes, in January and February. Pyongyang wants to mount tactical nuclear warheads on them.
North Korea also announced that it had test-fired new surface-to-ship missiles.

North Korean media reported that the country's military conducted firing drills involving short-range ballistic missiles, which it calls super-large multiple rocket launchers, on March 18.

The media released videos and photos showing at least six missiles being fired simultaneously.

Pyongyang also announced that it successfully conducted a ground jet test of a solid-fuel engine for a new-type of intermediate-range hypersonic missile on March 19.

It said that the success of the test allowed for the project to proceed toward completion.

S.Korea says North fired intermediate-range ballistic missile

The South Korean military says North Korea fired what appeared to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile early on Tuesday.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that the North launched the missile at around 6:53 a.m. from a site near Pyongyang toward waters off the east coast, and that the missile flew more than 600 kilometers.

The South Korean military says it is closely working with the United States and Japan to collect and analyze data.

South Korean military sources say they believe the launch was related to a test on March 19 of a solid-fuel engine for a new-type of intermediate-range hypersonic missile. Pyongyang said the test was successful.

Tuesday's ballistic missile launch was Pyongyang's third this year. The previous one was on March 18, when it conducted firing drills involving short-range ballistic missiles, which it refers to as "super-large multiple rocket launchers."

In January, North Korea announced it had successfully test-fired a solid-fuel intermediate-range ballistic missile with a warhead that can glide at a hypersonic speed. A solid-fuel missile can be fired more quickly than those using liquid propellants.

The South Korean military estimates the missile flew about 1,000 kilometers.

South Korean experts say the latest launch may have been the test-firing of a hypersonic missile. They say hypersonic missiles fired by the North in January 2022 traveled between 500 and 1,000 kilometers.

Japan remains vigilant for possible spy satellite launch by North Korea

The Japanese government's top spokesperson says the country is taking steps to prepare for a possible launch of a North Korean military spy satellite.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa spoke to reporters on Friday, following a media report from South Korea that Pyongyang is preparing to launch such a satellite.

A report by Yonhap News Agency on Thursday quoted South Korean military sources as saying a covering was set up recently at a satellite launching station in a northwestern region of North Korea.

Pyongyang said it successfully launched its first spy satellite in November.

Hayashi said North Korea has announced it will launch an additional three spy satellites this year. He expressed the view that the North may conduct a launch to send a satellite into space.

He said the Japanese government will stay on alert and do its utmost to monitor moves by North Korea, while gathering and analyzing intelligence in close cooperation with the United States and South Korea.

Hayashi also said Japanese Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyers, as well as the land-based PAC-3 interceptor systems in Okinawa Prefecture, are ready to respond if a spy satellite launched by the North falls onto Japanese territory.

S.Korea puts sanctions on Russian ships, individuals for helping N.Korea

South Korea has imposed its own sanctions against Russia for helping North Korea in ways that may help it build up its military.

South Korea's foreign ministry announced that two Russian ships, two organizations, and two individuals representing these organizations are subject to the sanctions.

The ministry said the ships were involved in moving military supplies between Russia and North Korea in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. The ships are now banned from entering South Korean ports without permission.

The two organizations and their representatives are said to have helped North Korean IT workers enter Russia, such as by providing documents.
They are suspected of helping these workers earn foreign currency for Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. Under the sanctions, the companies and individuals face limitations on monetary transactions in South Korea.

Seoul demands that Russia immediately stop any unlawful relations with the North, including military cooperation. The foreign ministry said such cooperation seriously threatens peace and stability beyond the Korean Peninsula and around the world.

It also said Seoul will consider additional sanctions if necessary, citing a possible threat to national security.

The sanctions come as Moscow appears to be trying to strengthen ties with North Korea. Russia's foreign intelligence agency chief visited Pyongyang in March. The Russian side has also indicated that President Vladimir Putin may pay a visit.

UN Security Council to discuss alleged Israeli strike on Iran's embassy in Syria

The UN Security Council has decided to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday following a deadly attack on Iran's embassy in Syria.

Iran blames Israel for the airstrike. Israel has not said whether it was involved.

Iran's state-run media said on Monday that an Israeli missile attack destroyed a consular section of the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The airstrike reportedly killed a senior military commander, his deputy and five others. The commander is said to have belonged to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, a unit in charge of special operations outside Iran.

Members of the Revolutionary Guards have been killed in Syria in a series of alleged attacks by Israel since last December. But this is the first time an Iranian diplomatic compound was struck.

The news triggered protests across Iran, with citizens gathering in squares and burning the Israeli flag.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian reportedly said that repeated defeats in Gaza had caused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to lose his "mental balance."

An Israeli military spokesperson said on Monday that the Israel Defense Force will not comment on reports in the foreign media.

Iran's UN representative requested an emergency Security Council session, in a letter to the UN secretary-general and Malta's UN ambassador. The country holds the Security Council presidency for April.

It is now scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in New York.

Israeli military announces end of 2-week raid on Al-Shifa hospital

Israel says its troops have left Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza after completing operations against what it calls "terrorist operatives" there. Officials in Gaza have condemned the assault as a "crime against humanity."

Israeli forces said on Monday that they detained about 500 suspects affiliated with terrorist organizations during the raid that lasted more than two weeks. They said they have also killed 200 people.

Reuters news agency has released footage that shows the scale of destruction at Al-Shifa and surrounding areas. It also shows a makeshift grave where many bodies are believed to be buried.

Officials in Gaza say Israeli forces have killed more than 400 people in and around the hospital complex.

They call the raid a "clear crime" against international law, as well as international humanitarian law and protocols. The officials urged all countries around the world, the United Nations and other organizations to condemn Israel.

Health authorities in Gaza say that as of Monday, the death toll in the enclave had risen to 32,845 since Israel launched its military offensive last October.

US raises concerns about Rafah offensive in online meeting with Israelis

The United States has reiterated its concerns over a planned ground offensive by Israeli forces into Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip. The message was conveyed in an online meeting between US and Israeli officials.

Israel is set to go ahead with a massive ground offensive into Rafah, where nearly 1.5 million people are taking shelter. The US is concerned about the possibility of mass civilian casualties.

The White House released a joint statement from the two-hour video conference on Monday.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan represented the United States. Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi spoke for Israel.
Experts and other senior officials also took part.

The statement says the two sides "agreed that they share the objective to see Hamas defeated in Rafah."

But it adds that the US has concerns about the offensive. Israel agreed to take such concerns into account, and to have follow-up discussions.

At a news conference on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that if Israel is "going to move forward with a military operation, we have to have this conversation. We have to understand how they are going to move forward."

Japan to resume funding UN Palestinian refugee agency

Japan is set to resume making financial contributions to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko told reporters on Tuesday that Japan will lift the suspension it imposed on the provision of funds, and start giving support again, as UNRWA has improved its governance.

She said "the humanitarian situation in Palestine is critical" and the agency's involvement in the distribution of humanitarian aid is essential.

Japan suspended funding in January after allegations surfaced that some members of UNRWA's staff were involved in Hamas's attack on Israel in October.

The ministry says Japan will give the agency about 35 million dollars as soon as preparations have been made. The money was allocated in last fiscal year's supplementary budget.

Kamikawa met the commissioner-general of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, in Tokyo last week.

They confirmed that Japan will receive regular reports on how funds are being used under a new framework.
