Iran touts attack against Israel, Netanyahu's war cabinet discusses response

Iran has touted its mass drone and missile attack against Israel, while Israel's war cabinet has discussed how to respond to the assault.

Iran began the attack late on Saturday. Israel says it intercepted most of the drones and missiles with the help of other countries, including the United States.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi says the attack taught Israel a lesson. Tehran says it mounted the assault in response to a strike on its embassy compound in Syria on April 1. The strike killed a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, among others.

The commander in chief of the Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, said Tehran carried out an operation that was limited to match the capability deployed by Israel to strike Iran's embassy premises.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian says Tehran informed its neighboring countries of the operation about 72 hours before it was conducted.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a war cabinet on Sunday to discuss how to respond to the attack.

The details of the session remain unclear. But Reuters news agency quotes Israeli officials as saying the war cabinet favored retaliation in the meeting, though it is divided over the timing and scale of any such response.

Former Defense Minister Benny Gantz, a member of the war cabinet, said his country will "exact the price from Iran in the fashion and timing that is right for" Israel.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said in an interview with ABC News on Sunday that "Israel succeeded in defending itself and the United States certainly made good our commitment to help them do that."

Kirby said President Joe Biden has been very clear publicly that the US does not seek a war with Iran.

Israel, Iran denounce each other at UN Security Council

The United Nations chief and many countries have urged Israel and Iran to exercise maximum restraint at an emergency Security Council meeting held after Iran's massive attack on Israel. But the two countries traded accusations.

The meeting was held on Sunday at Israel's request.

Iran launched large-scale drone and missile attacks on Israel over the weekend. It said they were in response to an airstrike on its embassy in Syria on April 1 that it says was carried out by Israel.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, "It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East."

He said neither the region nor the world can afford more war and now is the time for maximum restraint.

Many countries also urged Iran and Israel to exercise restraint to avoid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

But Israel's UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said the attack by Iran "crossed every red line and Israel reserves the legal right to retaliate."

Iran's ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said that despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Israel continues to focus on committing more atrocious crimes and shows no regard for international legal obligations.

US won't be part of any Israeli retaliation against Iran, senior official says

A senior official of US President Joe Biden's administration says the United States "would not be part of any" Israeli response to Iran's attack on Israel.

The official, speaking to reporters on Sunday, said Israelis are looking to protect and defend themselves.

The official said Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a teleconference on Saturday that the US will help defend Israel.

But the official also said the president told Netanyahu that "we do have to think carefully and strategically about" risks of escalation in the conflict.

Iran says it informed its neighbors and other countries of the operation against Israel about 72 hours in advance.

Another senior US official denied the claim by Iran. The official accused Tehran of not notifying the US of the attack, and having a clear intention to "destroy and to cause casualties."

The official said US navy ships operating in the eastern Mediterranean destroyed between four and six Iranian ballistic missiles during the Iranian attack.

The official also said US alert aircraft in the region shot down more than 70 drones, and the US Army's Patriot air defense system intercepted one ballistic missile assessed to be headed toward Israel.

G7 leaders condemn Iran's attack on Israel

The leaders of the Group of Seven nations have condemned the drone and missile attack that Iran conducted against Israel. Tehran says it carried out the assault in response to a strike on its "diplomatic premises" in Syria on April 1.

The leaders held an online meeting on Sunday. Italy, which currently holds the rotating G7 chair, issued a leaders' statement afterwards.

The document states that the leaders "unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms Iran's direct and unprecedented attack against Israel."

The statement says that the leaders express their "full solidarity and support to Israel and its people" and reaffirm their "commitment towards its security."

The statement adds, "With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilization of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation."

It says the leaders "will continue to work to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation."

The statement demands that "Iran and its proxies cease their attacks." It notes that the leaders "stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives."

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said during the meeting that his government is deeply concerned about the Iranian attack and strongly condemns it. He said the assault could further exacerbate the situation in the Middle East.

Kishida stressed that the international community as a whole should urge the relevant parties to calm the situation and exercise restraint, in order to prevent tensions from rising further.

He called on the G7 to lead discussions toward that end. The prime minister said that Japan will take a range of diplomatic steps.

Kishida added that Japan wants to work with other G7 countries to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in the Middle East, and to evacuate them if necessary.

N.Korea marks founder's birthday amid concerns over another spy satellite launch

North Korea is marking the 112th birthday of its late leader Kim Il Sung on Monday amid concerns it may use the occasion to launch another spy satellite.

North Korea's founder was the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un, and April 15 is one of the most important national holidays. A mass ceremony was held on Sunday in the capital Pyongyang.

The country's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, called on people to devote all their wisdom and passion to the party.

Pyongyang had previously said it plans to put three more military reconnaissance satellites into orbit this year.

South Korea's Defense Minister Shin Won-sik told public broadcaster KBS on Sunday that the satellite launch has apparently been delayed.

He said North Korea has been preparing for a launch on April 15 but it seems to have been postponed for technical reasons.

Shin said that Pyongyang could carry out the launch in a few days or by the end of the month at the latest.

NYT: Ohtani refused ex-interpreter's request to go along with his story

The New York Times says Los Angeles Dodgers player Ohtani Shohei refused his former interpreter's request to go along with a story that the Major League Baseball star paid his interpreter's gambling debts to a bookmaker.

Mizuhara Ippei was charged with illegally transferring more than 16 million dollars from Ohtani's bank account without his knowledge or permission. He was released on bail on Friday after a first court appearance.

The US newspaper reported on Saturday that Ohtani and Mizuhara talked face-to-face late at night after the season's opener on March 20 in Seoul. The conversation took place in a conference room in the basement of the hotel where their team was staying.

The paper says, "Mizuhara made one last effort to protect himself from the law" and "asked his patron to go along with the story" that Ohtani had paid Mizuhara's debts to a bookmaker.

But the paper said Ohtani refused and called his agent, Nez Balelo, into the conference room. Balelo reportedly had several other people dial in to manage the crisis, including a lawyer in Los Angeles, a crisis communications executive in New York, and a new interpreter. The paper said Mizuhara's wife was also present.

The NYT said the Los Angeles Dodgers promptly fired Mizuhara after the meeting at the hotel, and the ex-interpreter flew back to Los Angeles.

Stolen gold tea bowl not yet found, suspect arrested

A pure golden tea bowl worth about 10 million yen, or 65,000 dollars, is still missing as police in Tokyo arrested a man for its alleged theft on Saturday.

The 32-year old suspect is said to have confessed to the alleged crime.

The bowl was stolen from Takashimaya's flagship department store in the Nihonbashi district in Tokyo on Thursday where an event featuring golden objects was being held.

The suspect fled from the store by subway and got off at a station in eastern Tokyo.

Sources close to the investigation said that the suspect is likely to have sold the golden bowl on the same day to a resale store in the area for about 1.8 million yen cash.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police suspect that it has since changed hands.
