Japan's Shikoku region hit by M6.6 earthquake

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake rocked western Japan late Wednesday night. No tsunami was triggered.

The tremor struck at around 11:14 p.m. It was strongest in the Shikoku region's Ehime and Kochi prefectures. Officials say it clocked a lower 6 on Japan's zero to seven seismic scale, making it the area's strongest quake since the current scale system was introduced in 1996.

Residents began clearing away the debris on Thursday. Roof tiles and walls were scattered across a shopping street in Uwajima City in Ehime.

Water pipes and utility poles were also damaged elsewhere. There have also been reports of debris blocking some roads.

Fallen rocks and trees forced JR Shikoku to suspend some train services through Thursday.

Authorities say only minor injuries, such as falls, have been reported. Some people were treated in hospital.

Nuclear power plants in the area are also stable. No major issues were reported at the Ikata nuclear plant in Ehime, nor at the Sendai plant in Kagoshima Prefecture. Radiation levels are said to remain steady at both.

The tremor resurfaced concerns about a potential mega-quake. This quake was centered in the Bungo Channel, which is part of the Nankai Trough. Experts expect a mega-quake in the trough in the next 30 years. But an expert says Wednesday's quake was probably unrelated.

The Earthquake Research Institute, the University of Tokyo's Professor Satake Kenji said he believes the cause of the earthquake differed from those in the Nankai Trough. He added that he thinks the quake came from the Philippine Sea Plate, which is sinking slightly.

Authorities are calling for caution, saying more quakes are likely to hit the region over the next week.

Families of Japanese abductees seek further cooperation from US ambassador to UN

Families of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea have sought further cooperation in bringing their loved ones back home in a meeting with the US ambassador to the United Nations.

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who is visiting Japan, met the families at the prime minister's office in Tokyo on Thursday. They were joined by Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa.

Thomas-Greenfield said she understands the families' pain and sense of loss. She promised that the US government will raise the issue at every opportunity and make efforts toward the return of all abductees.

Yokota Takuya, the younger brother of abductee Yokota Megumi and the head of a group of abductees' families, was accompanied by their mother Sakie and others. Megumi disappeared in 1977 when she was 13 years old.

Yokota Takuya said this grave violation of human rights has been going on for nearly 50 years. He emphasized the pressing need to act as the abductees' parents age.

He appealed to the United States not to ease its sanctions on North Korea, and to continue working with Japan.

Yokota Sakie said she desperately wants to see her daughter, whom she raised with much care and love.

She asked for continued support so that all the families can be reunited.

US Navy aircraft flies through Taiwan Strait

The US Pacific Fleet said that a Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft flew through the Taiwan Strait in international airspace Wednesday, local time.

The commander of the US 7th Fleet said in a statement that "by operating within the Taiwan Strait in accordance with international law, the United Sates upholds the navigational rights and freedoms of all nations."

It said the aircraft's transit "demonstrates the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific."

A spokesperson for the Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command issued a statement sharply criticizing the move.

"A US P-8A anti-submarine patrol aircraft flew through the Taiwan Strait on April 17 and hyped it up publicly," the statement said.

It added, "The troops of the Eastern Theater Command will remain on high alert at all times and resolutely safeguard China's national sovereignty as well as regional peace and stability."

The 7th Fleet sent its guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn through the Taiwan Strait last month to underscore freedom of navigation. That move also drew a backlash from China.

Wednesday's development came as top US and China defense officials held talks for the first time in 17 months.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun that "the United States will continue to fly sail and operate - safely and responsibly - wherever international law allows."

He also reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Strait.

Dong replied that the Chinese military will never condone external support for Taiwan.

Netanyahu meets British, German FMs, stresses Israel's right to self-defense

The foreign ministers of Germany and Britain have called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to exercise restraint to prevent further confrontations in the Middle East.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her British counterpart, David Cameron, met Netanyahu in Israel on Wednesday.

The meeting came as members of Israel's cabinet are holding daily talks following a purported Israeli strike on Iran's embassy in Syria and Iran's retaliatory attack.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Baerbock sharply criticized Iran. She said: "The region must not be allowed to slide step by step into a situation in which the outcome is completely unpredictable. Everyone must now act prudently and responsibly."

She called on both Iran and Israel to exercise restraint.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu addressed the cabinet after his meeting with the British and German foreign ministers.

He said the diplomats "have all kinds of suggestions and advice, which I appreciate; however, I would also like to clarify -- we will make our decisions ourselves. The state of Israel will do whatever is necessary to defend itself."

Israeli forces have been intensifying attacks on the Shia Muslim group Hezbollah, based in southern Lebanon.

Against this backdrop, Israel's Defense Ministry on Tuesday announced that its aircraft "struck and eliminated" a Hezbollah commander in the region.

The group responded by carrying out a retaliatory attack in northern Israel, which the ministry says left 14 injured.

Concerns are rising that the conflict may further intensify, even as a truce in Gaza appears elusive.

G7 foreign ministers meet in Italy, Middle East high on agenda

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven nations have begun a meeting in Italy with the situation in the Middle East among the issues on the agenda.

The three-day meeting got underway on Wednesday on the southern island of Capri. Italy currently holds the rotating G7 chair. Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko is participating.

Thursday's session will focus on the Middle East. The top diplomats will discuss how to respond to Iran's recent large-scale missile and drone attack on Israel.

Kamikawa is expected to condemn Iran for escalating the situation. She will also stress that the G7 should strongly urge both Iran and Israel to exercise restraint.

The ministers will likely present their countries' proposals for sanctions against Iran. They are seeking to deliver a unified message to prevent the situation from further deteriorating.

The ministers will also address other matters, including the situations in Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific region.

A joint statement will be released after the closing of the talks.

US House set to vote on additional Ukraine aid on Saturday

The Republican leader of the US House of Representatives says the chamber is expected to vote on Saturday on a stalled measure to provide new defense assistance to Ukraine.

The House on Wednesday unveiled a package that involves separate spending bills on aid to Ukraine, Israel and other US allies.

Republican Speaker Mike Johnson announced the voting plan amid threats to oust him by some hardline members of his party who strongly oppose aid for Ukraine.

The Ukraine bill would provide roughly 60 billion dollars. It requires some of the assistance to be repaid.

Aid for Israel totals around 26 billion dollars. There have been growing calls in the House to swiftly provide support for Israel following Iran's massive drone and missile attack.

About 8 billion dollars will be appropriated for the Indo-Pacific region, including Taiwan.

US President Joe Biden released a statement expressing his strong support for the aid package. He urged the House and Senate to ensure its quick passage.

Studio Ghibli to receive Honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival

Japan's animation production company Studio Ghibli, known for its Oscar-winning "Spirited Away" and "The Boy and the Heron," is to receive the Honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Festival de Cannes, which is one of the world's three major film festivals, made the announcement on Wednesday.

The Honorary Palme d'Or is usually awarded to individuals, such as film directors and actors, for their great contributions to cinema. It is the first time that Cannes will give the award to a group.

The festival's organizers praised the achievements of Studio Ghibli, established by anime film directors Miyazaki Hayao and the late Takahata Isao.

They said "the Japanese studio embodied by two superb storytellers, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and a host of cult characters, has unleashed a fresh wind on animated film over the past four decades."

The studio's producer Suzuki Toshio said he is truly honored to receive the award.

He said, "Although Miyazaki and I have aged considerably, I am sure that Studio Ghibli will continue to take on new challenges, led by the staff who will carry on the spirit of the company."

The 77th Cannes Film Festival will run from May 14 through May 25.

Time names Miyazaki Hayao as one of 100 most influential people of 2024

US magazine Time has named Japanese anime director Miyazaki Hayao and sociologist Ueno Chizuko among its 100 most influential people of this year.

The annual list was released on Wednesday.

Describing Miyazaki as "a brutal realist regarding greed, war, and human rage," the magazine touts him as "the single most influential animation director in the history of the medium."

The magazine says translations of Ueno's books on such topics as feminism and misogyny have become bestsellers in China. It adds that Ueno has become "a role model for millions of Chinese women quietly rebelling against pressure to marry and have babies."

Osaka University Professor Hayashi Katsuhiko, an expert in developmental and reproductive biology, is also on the list. Time says his team produced eggs using iPS cells from male mice, resulting in pups born to two biological fathers. Hayashi is commended for offering hope to those with infertility problems or same-sex couples who would like to have biological children.

Yale University Professor Iwasaki Akiko is also on the list. The Japan-born immunologist is renowned for her research on the mechanisms of post-COVID symptoms. Time says Iwasaki is "at the top of her game."

Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, is another of Time's 100 most influential people. She continues to resist the government of President Vladimir Putin after her husband died in February.
