Prime Minister Kishida vows to expand ties with US at White House dinner

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has vowed to expand ties with the United States in a speech at a dinner after his summit with US President Joe Biden.

Kishida, who is on an official visit to the US, attended the state dinner at the White House hosted by the President and First Lady on Wednesday.

Government officials and business leaders from both countries were invited to the event.

Japanese pop duo YOASOBI and actor Robert De Niro were also among the guests.

Speaking in English, Kishida said he was speechless in front of such a huge number of prominent American and Japanese guests, and that his wife, Yuko, told him it was hard to tell who the guest of honor was.

He added he was relieved when he was led to a seat next to President Biden.

Kishida went on to say that we are now at a turning point in history. He expressed his determination to take "this unshakeable Japan-US relationship" to even greater heights and hand it on to the next generation.

Biden said: "Today without question, our alliance is literally stronger than it has ever been. Tonight, we pledge to keep going."

Kishida gifts new cherry trees to Washington DC

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has donated cherry tree saplings from Japan at a ceremony in Washington DC.

The plants were presented on Wednesday at a site in the US capital that is famous for the thousands of cherry trees gifted by Japan more than 100 years ago.

The saplings are among the 250 cherry trees that Japan is giving to the United States to honor the 250th anniversary of US independence in 2026.

Kishida announced the gift of the cherry trees when he was greeted by President Joe Biden at the White House earlier on Wednesday.

Kishida said at the presentation ceremony that he hopes the cherry blossoms will bloom forever as a symbol of the strong ties between Japan and the US.

A US government official expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the cherry trees. He said the cherry blossoms of Washington DC are the most important gift the US has ever received from a foreign country, along with the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Iranian attacks on Israel may be 'imminent': US media reports

US media outlet Bloomberg says Iran could soon launch major attacks against Israeli targets.

Bloomberg on Wednesday cited multiple officials as saying the US and its allies believe major missile or drone strikes by Iran or its proxies against military and government targets in Israel are imminent.

Iran's embassy in Syria came under missile attack on April 1. Seven military officers, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders, were killed, along with six Syrian civilians.

Tehran has blamed Israel for the attack and vowed retaliation.

US news website Axios on Wednesday quoted multiple Israeli government officials as saying the senior US military commander in charge of the Middle East is expected to visit Israel on Thursday to "coordinate around a possible attack on Israel by Iran and its proxies."

US President Joe Biden told reporters on Wednesday that his country's commitment to Israel's security against threats from Iran and its proxies is "ironclad." He added, "We're going to do all we can to protect Israel's security."
