South Korea holds general election on Wednesday

Voters in South Korea are casting their ballots on Wednesday to choose their representatives to the National Assembly.

The country holds general elections every four years. This year's election is seen as a midterm assessment of the administration of President Yoon Suk-yeol. He will enter the third year of his five-year term next month.

Voting is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. at more than 14,000 polling stations. The 300 members of the single-chamber legislature will be elected by district elections and through a proportional representation system.

The election is expected to be a contest between the ruling People Power Party and the main opposition Democratic Party.

The PPP seeks to secure a majority to help run a stable government. The Democratic Party aims to win the most seats like it did in the previous election.

Turnout for last week's early voting reached a record high of 31.1 percent, indicating a high level of interest among eligible voters.

Polling stations close at 6 p.m., with preliminary results expected early Thursday morning.

Japan PM Kishida, his wife attend informal dinner with Bidens

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his wife, Yuko, now visiting the United States, have attended an informal dinner hosted by US President Joe Biden and US First Lady Jill Biden.

Before the dinner, the Bidens invited them to the White House on Tuesday.

Kishida gave Biden gifts that include a pair of coffee cups and ballpoint pens, which are traditional Wajima lacquerware from Ishikawa Prefecture. The area was hit by a deadly earthquake on January 1.

The coffee cups each feature the first names of Biden and his wife, painted using traditional technique of makie, or decorating lacquerware by sprinkling gold particles.

The prime minister told the hosts that the artisans who made the gifts are survivors of the quake.

The prime minister's wife gave the first lady Takaoka copperware accessories from Toyama Prefecture.

The couples then moved to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

The prime minister is scheduled to hold a summit with the US president on Wednesday. The two leaders are expected to confirm strengthening bilateral cooperation in wide areas including defense, economic security and space. They will also commit to seeking better coordination between units of Japan Self-Defense Forces and the US military as global partners.

Mexico releases video of Ecuador raid on its embassy

Mexico's government has released surveillance video of police forcing their way into its embassy in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito last week.

Ecuadorian police stormed the Mexican embassy on Friday and took custody of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who was convicted of corruption. Glas had taken refuge at the embassy seeking political asylum.

The video shows armed security personnel breaking into the embassy, pushing a Mexican diplomat away from a door, and carrying out an individual believed to be Glas by his arms and legs.

Mexico has cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador, and is stepping up condemnation.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says his country cannot remain silent in the face of a severity like the one suffered by its diplomatic representation in Ecuador.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa says he made exceptional decisions to protect national security, the rule of law, and the dignity of a people who reject any form of impunity for criminals.

The embassy incursion is also drawing criticism from the international community.

Nicaragua has announced it will sever diplomatic ties with Ecuador. The United Nations, the United States and countries in Central and South America have condemned the raid.

One week after strong quake struck Taiwan

A week has passed since a powerful earthquake occurred off Taiwan's eastern coast on April 3. Rebuilding people's lives is emerging as a challenge.

In Hualien County, near the epicenter, the magnitude 7.2 quake registered an intensity of upper 6 on Taiwan's seismic scale of zero to 7.

Thirteen people have been confirmed dead. Search operations continue for six people still unaccounted for in the popular tourist destination of Taroko Gorge and elsewhere.

The quake also damaged 870 buildings and caused 75 cases of damage to roads and tunnels across Taiwan.

Hualien County says more than 1,400 households' homes were damaged.

County officials are working with real estate agents and others to secure housing for affected people. They have also set up a counter to receive applications for relief payments and subsidies.

Some roads have yet to be repaired in Taroko Gorge, where there were falling rocks and mudslides. Concerns are growing about the quake's impact on tourism, a key industry in the region.
