The government of Iran has warned that the country may see a resurgence of the new coronavirus outbreak.

Iran was hit by an initial outbreak at the end of February. The health ministry has since confirmed over 101,000 infections and a death toll of over 6,400.

Tehran has resumed economic activities in stages since mid-April across the nation after the number of new infections showed signs of slowing at the beginning of the month.

The ministry on Wednesday reported that the number of new infections rose for four straight days since Sunday. It announced the number hit 1,680 on Wednesday, the largest since April 12.

Health ministry spokesperson Kianush Jahanpur noted that a rise in the number of nonessential outings and travel may be to blame.

He called on the Iranian people to realize that life has not returned to what it was before. He asked the public to take measures against infection, including wearing masks and social distancing.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has disclosed plans to significantly ease the coronavirus lockdown in her country to allow all shops to reopen.

Two weeks have passed since smaller shops in the country were given the green light to resume operations.

Merkel on Wednesday noted that Germany's goal of slowing the spread of the coronavirus has been achieved and said the first phase of the pandemic has passed.

She said all shops, regardless of floor space, will be allowed to open.

Restaurants, hotels and movie theaters will be gradually reopened, taking into account existing circumstances.

The Bundesliga soccer league is to restart in the second half of May.

However, when new infections exceed 50 people in 100,000 in a municipality over a seven-day period, restrictions will be reimposed.

Social distancing of 1.5 meters is to remain in place till June 5.

Merkel told reporters that Germany is following a bold path and that it can afford to be a little bold, but Germans must remain cautious.

Germany went into lockdown in March.

The World Health Organization says it is in talks with China to send a new mission to the country to investigate how the coronavirus spread.

The United States and China have exchanged barbs regarding the origin of the virus. US President Donald Trump has said it may have spread from a lab in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Beijing has denied the allegation, saying there is no evidence for it.

The technical lead of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, Maria Van Kerkhove, said during a news conference on Wednesday that there is discussion with the Chinese side over a further mission to look at "what happened at the beginning."

Van Kerkhove also referred to the reports that a pneumonia patient in France whose samples were taken on December 27 had the coronavirus. France reported its first infection on January 24. It was also the first confirmed case in Europe.

Van Kerkhove suggested someone infected may have traveled from Wuhan to other locations in December, but added, "I don't want to speculate." She said it is important to look further into the case.

The WHO will hold its annual assembly starting May 18. Taiwan is seeking to participate in it as an observer.

WHO legal counsel Derek Walton said Taiwan's participation is a question for the 194 members of the WHO.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has accused China of covering up the new coronavirus outbreak and held the country responsible for the pandemic.

Pompeo spoke to reporters on Wednesday at the State Department, where he claimed "China could have prevented the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide". He added, "They had a choice, but instead, China covered up the outbreak."

He criticized China's initial response to the outbreak, which include reprimanding a doctor in the Chinese city of Wuhan who went online to warn people of the coronavirus before the government announced the outbreak.

Pompeo said China is still refusing to share the information the US needs to keep people safe.

He also called on all nations to support Taiwan's participation as an observer at the World Health Assembly this month, dismissing opposition from China.

Pompeo was scrutinized by reporters over his remark on a TV show on Sunday that there is "enormous evidence" that the virus began in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

He defended his comment, saying, "We are all trying to figure out the right answer" and get clarity. He added: "We don't have certainty. And there is significant evidence that the virus came from the laboratory."

US President Donald Trump says he will be able to report as early as next week whether China is fulfilling its obligations under the "Phase One" trade deal the two countries signed in January.

The agreement requires the Trump administration to lower the additional tariffs imposed on Chinese imports, while Beijing has to increase its imports of agricultural products and other goods from the US.

Trump has expressed dissatisfaction that the expected boost of US exports has been delayed as China has seen a decline in demand due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the White House was watching whether China would meet its commitments. He said he will be able to report on that by the end of next week.

Trump described the coronavirus as the invisible enemy, saying he doesn't like how it got to the United States because it could have been stopped.

China has dismissed Trump's claim that Beijing is responsible for the pandemic, saying the president is trying to divert criticism from his initial response to the virus.

Japan's health ministry appears set to approve antiviral drug remdesivir as a treatment for coronavirus patients.

The fast-track approval follows in the footsteps of the United States, which authorized last Friday the emergency use of the drug to treat coronavirus patients.

Remdesivir was being developed by US-based Gilead Sciences to treat people infected with Ebola.

An advisory panel to the health minister is to hold a meeting late Thursday to discuss an application the pharmaceutical company filed on Monday.

The ministry is to approve the drug by the end of the day through special, highly simplified procedures. These are only available for drugs in urgent need that have already been approved in other countries.

Remdesivir will be the first drug approved in Japan to treat coronavirus patients. Expectations are high the drug can cure patients in serious condition.

At the same time, its supply and accessibility are expected to be limited.

For the time being, the Japanese government is to distribute the drug mainly to medical institutions treating patients with severe symptoms.

Remdesivir is said to have side effects, including kidney failure. There is a mixed view among members of the international community over the effectiveness of the drug.

Japan is to continue collaborative clinical trials it is conducting with international partners.

The Chinese government's office for Hong Kong has warned against a revival of pro-democracy protests in the territory.

The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office said in a statement on Wednesday that "tyrannical forces" and their "behind-the-scenes" organizers want to "drag Hong Kong off a cliff."

It said the city will never be calm unless all violent protesters are all removed.

This comes as Hong Kong relaxes social restrictions to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Demonstrations and rallies have declined sharply since January due to the pandemic.

But calls for protests have restarted as there have been no reports of new cases in the city for more than two weeks, other than arrivals from abroad.

Hundreds of protesters gathered at a commercial facility on April 26.

Beijing's liaison office in Hong Kong issued a statement on Saturday strongly condemning radical forces that ignore people's suffering and seek to launch a new round of violence.

China appears wary as Hong Kong marks the first anniversary of the start of anti-government protests on June 9. The territory is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections in September.

South Korea's spy agency believes the North's leader, Kim Jong Un, has not had any surgery related to his heart recently, dampening speculation over his health.

A lawmaker says the National Intelligence Service made the comment on Wednesday in an informal briefing to a parliamentary committee.

Kim Jong Un's health has been under the spotlight, with US broadcaster CNN reporting in April that he was in grave danger after undergoing surgery.

But North Korean media reported on Saturday that Kim attended a ceremony at a fertilizer factory, his first public appearance in 20 days.

The spy agency is quoted as saying that Kim had been managing state affairs as usual even when he did not appear in public. It suggested that he would have needed four to five weeks to recover from any heart surgery.

The agency also said that Kim has appeared in public 17 times so far this year, one-third the number from the same period in previous years. It suggested that could be due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
