The South Korean military says multiple gunshots were fired from North Korea toward the South's guard post near the military demarcation line on Sunday. No injuries were reported.

The military's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the incident took place at around 7:41 a.m. local time. They said the South Korean military responded by issuing warning broadcasts and firing two shots toward the North.

The South Korean military is investigating whether the shooting was intentional and is contacting the North through a military communication line.

The two sides previously exchanged fire in October 2014 when about 10 North Korean soldiers approached the demarcation line.

US President Donald Trump wrote on Saturday on Twitter that he is "glad" to learn that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is "well".

The tweet comes after North Korea's ruling party newspaper published a report with photographs detailing a visit by Kim to a fertilizer plant on Friday.
There have been speculations about Kim's health.

When Trump was asked about Kim on Friday, he told reporters that he would rather not comment on it, but added that he would speak about it at the appropriate time.

North Korea's state-run media says leader Kim Jong Un attended a ceremony marking the completion of a fertilizer plant on Friday.

He was reportedly seen cutting a ribbon and waving, as onlookers cheered.

The report by the Korean Central News Agency on Saturday is its first on Kim's public activity since April 12.

CNN recently quoted a US government source as saying Kim was in "grave danger" after undergoing surgery.

The coronavirus pandemic is looming large over the US presidential election that's due to take place in six months' time.

President Donald Trump will be challenged by the presumptive Democratic nominee, former vice president Joe Biden, in the November 3 polls.

According to US polling website RealClearPolitics, Trump's average support rating stood at 42 percent as of the end of April, lagging behind Biden's 48.2 percent.

Trump has shifted his strategy after the coronavirus dealt a heavy blow to the economy, whose strength had been central to his re-election campaign.

He's now touting his efforts to tackle the crisis as a "wartime president," using his daily news conferences to showcase his leadership and massive economic measures to appeal to his support base.

The Democrats are trying to rally both moderates and progressives behind Biden, with calls for unity raised by former president Barack Obama and other party heavyweights.

Biden is relying heavily on the Internet and TV appearances as the coronavirus has forced cancellation of the usual campaign rallies.

The response to the pandemic itself has become a major campaign issue. Trump is increasingly turning the blame on China and is criticizing Biden as being weak against Beijing.

Biden argues that Trump failed to respond quickly to the outbreak, and that the president's disregard for international cooperation allowed China's rise on the global stage.

Uncertainty over the course of the pandemic is also raising concern over whether the nationwide election could take place as planned.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says his condition while being treated for the coronavirus was so serious that his doctors prepared to announce his death.

Johnson gave The Sun newspaper an interview that was published in its electronic version on Saturday.

The prime minister said he initially brushed off how serious it was when he tested positive for the virus.

He was later admitted to a London hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Johnson said he was fitted with a face mask and got "liters and liters of oxygen for a long time." He said he realized it was getting serious when he was moved to intensive care.

Johnson said doctors had all sorts of arrangements for what to do if things went badly wrong. He admitted he came to terms with his own mortality -- probably for the first time.

He also said the government had contingency plans in place.

Johnson has a newborn son, and chose a name that honors two doctors who treated him.

Johnson has been cautious about easing lockdown measures.
British media are reporting that the prime minister's own experience could influence his decisions.

A hospital in the western Japanese city of Kobe has found that about 3 percent of its outpatients carry coronavirus antibodies, indicating they were infected at one point.

A group of doctors, mainly from Kobe City Medical Center General Hospital, collected 1,000 blood samples from patients who visited the hospital for reasons other than coronavirus symptoms between late March and early April.

33 samples, or 3.3 percent, tested positive for the antibodies.

The doctors note the implications of their findings are limited by questions about the accuracy of the tests, and the fact that the samples were taken exclusively from hospital outpatients.

But they say the percentage could, when applied to Kobe's population, indicate that about 50,000 people in the city have been infected.

The head of the hospital, Kihara Yasuki, said on Saturday that it was possible more people than expected have been infected and carry the antibodies as a result.

Professor Katsuda Yoshiaki of Kansai University of Social Welfare warns that government social distancing and stay-at-home recommendations should be kept in place because the finding shows that most people have not yet been infected.

Key words : GDP
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200503_05/

Analysts believe Japan's GDP shrank in the January-March quarter due to the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.

Ten private research institutes project annualized growth rates of between minus 3.5 percent and minus 6.5 percent.

That would mean a contraction for the second straight quarter. The consumption tax hike last October was behind the fall in the previous quarter.

Personal consumption fell in the January-March period as people refrained from traveling or eating out amid appeals to stay at home. Exports also plunged as economic activity stagnated globally.

All 10 research institutes believe the economy will take a bigger hit from the coronavirus in the April-June quarter.

Some project a contraction of more than 20 percent. That would be worse than what happened during the 2008 global financial crisis.

An emergency seminar has been held online to help cope with alcohol addiction, as people are urged to stay home in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The Japan-based group called "Oneness Group" is working to help people recover from alcohol addiction.

It said that it received 58 requests for advice about drinking problems in April, which is double the number it normally receives in a month.

They vary from "I am drinking more as I was told to stay home and have nothing to do" to "my husband becomes violent after drinking."

The group decided to give the seminar for alcoholics and their families, as the Japan's weeklong spring holiday may aggravate addiction problems.

In the seminar on Saturday, it was explained that alcoholics tend to think only about their yearning for alcohol and physical discomfort and family members tend to be frustrated, anxious and isolated from society.

Alcoholics and their family were urged to seek help before they are overcome by their problems.

Co-President of the group Miyake Takayuki said that they receive an increasing number of calls about addicted people who began drinking again without seeking help for their problems.

He said that the group hopes to provide help as much as possible online and through other means.
