The governor of the US state of New York has been publicly tested for the coronavirus in an effort to encourage more people to undergo the procedure.

Andrew Cuomo received the test during a televised news conference on Sunday.

He said the state has doubled its PCR testing capacity to 40,000 people per day, providing the state with more than 700 testing sites.

New York residents eligible for testing include individuals with suspected symptoms of COVID-19 and those who have had, or will likely have contact, with infected people.

State officials have been expanding testing capacity, believing that efforts to contain the virus require a better picture of how infections have been spreading.

The state has confirmed roughly 2,000 new cases per day recently, with the cumulative figure exceeding 350,000 as of Saturday.

Starting on Friday, the state allowed some businesses to reopen in regions that had met certain criteria, except for urban areas such as New York City.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to have a significant economic impact, with Japan's GDP plunging during the January-to-March quarter.

The Cabinet Office says GDP for the period shrank an annualized 3.4 percent from the previous quarter in real terms. It's the second straight contraction.

Personal consumption, which makes up more than half of Japan's GDP, fell by 0.7 percent. People refrained from eating out and tourist activities. Car sales also dropped sharply.

Exports plunged 6 percent as economic activity stagnated globally. Housing investment fell 4.5 percent, while corporate investment was down 0.5 percent.

Analysts are bracing for the economy to take a bigger hit from the pandemic in the April-June quarter.

Key words : Trump Obama handling
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200518_10/

US President Donald Trump has lashed out on his predecessor Barack Obama, accusing him of being "grossly incompetent."

Obama criticized the Trump administration's handling of the coronavirus crisis on Saturday during an online address.

Without naming anyone, he said that "a lot of them aren't even pretending to be in charge."

On Sunday, Trump told reporters that he had not seen Obama's comments, but added that he was an incompetent president.

On the same day White House adviser Peter Navarro said during an ABC television program that he is glad that "Mr. Obama has a new job as Joe Biden's press secretary."

Trump has tried to shift the blame to Obama for the current crisis claiming the previous administration left the government inadequately prepared against infectious diseases.

He also repeatedly pursued the conspiracy theory that Obama was behind the investigations of Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

Since Obama has declared his support for former Vice President Joe Biden as president , Trump and his staff are stepping up criticism of the still popular former president.

They lined up the street wearing facemasks to greet her on Saturday. But when her car arrived, they turned their backs one by one.

The public broadcaster RTBF reported that the medical professionals clearly showed their anger towards her.

The Brussels Times reported that the healthcare workers expressed frustration over the government's handling of the crisis and want improved working conditions related to salaries and staff shortages.

Belgium has a population of about 11.5 million and more than 55,000 coronavirus infection cases.

Key words : Thailand indoor

Thailand started allowing large stores and indoor sports facilities to reopen from Sunday as part of the second phase of its easing of restrictions. The process began earlier this month.

The number of daily new cases has declined since early last month, falling to single digits or zero since May 5. The country previously reported over 100 new cases per day.

At a Bangkok shopping mall, visitors used mobile phones to scan a QR code for entry. That allows for anyone found to have come into close contact with a carrier to be notified. The mall was open for the first time in around two months.

Management requested that people on the escalator stand two steps behind the person in front. It also limited the number of people entering the food court at one time.

Local authorities are also allowing the sports gyms to reopen for up to 2 hours per person for weight training and yoga. People are required to stay at least 2 meters away from others.

Entertainment facilities will stay closed, however, and a nighttime curfew will stay in place.

The government says it will monitor the situation carefully to make sure the easing measures do not lead to a resurgence of new infections.

Key words : Japan analyzing
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200518_04/

The Japanese government will likely decide whether to lift the state of emergency in eight remaining prefectures by closely analyzing infection data in Tokyo and Osaka.

The government issued the original state of emergency on April 7. Last Thursday it announced the lifting of the status for 39 prefectures.

The government plans to ask a panel of experts for its opinions and determine whether to lift the state of emergency in the eight prefectures around Thursday.

The emergency declaration still covers Tokyo and its surrounding eastern prefectures of Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa as well as the northern prefecture of Hokkaido and the western neighboring prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo.

The government will likely treat the four eastern prefectures as one region and the three western prefectures as another because numerous people usually travel across their borders every day.

The government is expected to focus on infection statistics in Tokyo and Osaka when it considers whether to lift the state of emergency in the two regions.

Tokyo confirmed five new infections on Sunday, marking the first time since March 22 for the Japanese capital to record five or fewer cases. Osaka confirmed no new infections on Sunday, registering the first time since March 9 for the prefecture to see zero cases.

A government official says the steady fall in daily confirmed infections is a good sign. But the official adds there is still the need to assess whether the downward curve will continue from Monday and beyond.

One of the worrying facts is that Hokkaido and Kanagawa have been recording certain numbers of new infections in recent days.

Another is an increase in the number of people who visited downtown districts in the eight prefectures and elsewhere over the first weekend since the state of emergency was removed in 39 prefectures.

The government is urging people in the eight prefectures to stay at home and take other steps to prevent infections. It is also calling on residents elsewhere to maintain social distancing measures.

The minister in charge of the coronavirus response, Nishimura Yasutoshi, said people need to keep their guard up to prevent a second wave of infections as no one knows where the coronavirus is lurking.

Japanese health authorities reported 57 new cases of coronavirus infection and 19 deaths on Saturday.

The number of confirmed infections in the country stands at 16,310.

An additional 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was quarantined in Yokohama, brings the total to 17,022.

The country's death toll stands at 761, including 13 from the cruise ship.

By prefecture, Tokyo tops the list with 5,050 cases, followed by Osaka with 1,770, Kanagawa with 1,261 and Hokkaido with 1,006.

Officials say there have been 317 confirmed cases at airport quarantine stations and other points of entry.

Fourteen cases were found among those who returned from China on government-chartered planes.

Health officials say 236 people remain in serious condition, including four from the Diamond Princess as of Saturday.

A total of 11,806 people, including 653 from the Diamond Princess, have recovered and left hospital.
