The head of the World Health Organization says the agency needs an additional 1.3 billion dollars this year for its response to the coronavirus pandemic.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke about the funding gap at a news conference on Friday.
He said the agency will continue to help with the development of safe and effective vaccines and therapeutics for COVID-19, and provide countries with weaker health systems with essential health services.
The move comes after the WHO called for financial cooperation from member countries in February, saying that 675 million dollars was needed to contain the coronavirus outbreak.
In response, more than 40 countries and organizations offered assistance, including Britain with about 173 million dollars, Japan with 47.5 million dollars, and the United States with about 30 million dollars.
But the US has frozen its funding for the agency since April after criticizing it as being "China-centric" in its response to the coronavirus.
The US is the largest single donor to the WHO.

An aide to US Vice President Mike Pence has tested positive for the coronavirus, raising fears of possible contagion among top White House officials.
President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that Pence's press secretary, Katie Miller, had been diagnosed with the virus.
The announcement comes a day after the White House confirmed Trump's personal valet had tested positive for the virus.
The Trump administration has recommended the public wear face masks to help prevent the spread of the virus.
However, neither Trump nor Pence has worn a mask on official visits including to a hospital and a mask factory.
Trump and Pence undergo a coronavirus test every day, and the president says this is his reason for not wearing a mask.
But experts warn getting tested and taking preventative measures are separate matters.

The Japanese government plans to make a coronavirus contact-tracing app available by the end of this month.
The app records the data of smartphones that come within a certain distance of each other. People will then be alerted if they have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with the virus.
The government held a meeting on Friday to discuss ways to use information technology for preventing the spread of the virus.
It was decided the app should not keep track of phone numbers and location data, to protect people's privacy.
Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi says the operating systems of smartphone models are being updated to run the app. He says he hopes it will be put into practical use by the end of the month.

Baseball fans in Taiwan have been allowed into stadiums to watch professional league games for the first time since the current season began on April 12 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Authorities allowed the league to admit up to 1,000 spectators per game, starting on Friday, when two were played.
At a stadium in New Taipei City, fans underwent temperature checks at the entrance.
They were all assigned a seat shown on their tickets to enable contact tracing in case someone at the stadium is infected. They were arranged spaciously to ensure social distancing.
In an address before the game, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung said watching ballgames brightens people's hearts. He encouraged fans to enjoy their lives while protecting themselves from the virus.
The crowd, all wearing masks, cheered as the game started.
A man attending with three children described it a precious opportunity, despite certain inconveniences such as no food services.
Taiwan authorities say they want to gradually allow more spectators into stadiums while staying vigilant for new infections.

Informed sources say Japanese prosecutors questioned a Diet lawmaker couple earlier this month on a voluntary basis over their alleged violations of the election law.
The sources say the questioning took place during a holiday period in early May.
The investigators are believed to have asked Kawai Anri and her husband, former Justice Minister Kawai Katsuyuki, about allegations related to the Upper House election last July. The wife won her first Diet seat in the Hiroshima constituency in the election.
Prosecutors suspect the couple, both members of the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party, used some of her campaign funds to hand local politicians cash in order to secure their support in the election.
At least more than 10 people, including prefectural and city assembly members, admitted to prosecutors they had received cash from either member of the couple. The money ranged from roughly 470 to 2,800 dollars.
Prosecutors searched the offices and homes of several local politicians.
Prosecutors earlier questioned the Kawais on several occasions in March over different charges related to the election.
Two of their aides are alleged to have paid some of the wife's campaign staff more than the legal limit for the election. Their secretaries were indicted.
The husband's office declined to comment last month, saying investigations are underway.
