The body of a Japanese doctor and humanitarian worker who was shot to death in Afghanistan is to leave the country on Saturday, accompanied by his family.

Tetsu Nakamura was killed in an ambush by an unidentified armed group in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan, on Wednesday.

Nakamura's widow Naoko and daughter Akiko arrived in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Friday to claim his body.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani met them at the presidential office to convey his condolences. Ghani told them that it's the responsibility of Afghan authorities to identify and arrest the assailants.

Nakamura had spent years in Afghanistan offering humanitarian aid and helping with reconstruction projects, including the construction of irrigation canals.

In October, he became the first foreigner to be awarded honorary Afghan citizenship.

Afghan police believe the armed group targeted the prominent doctor to increase its profile inside and outside the country.

Nakamura's body is expected to arrive in Japan on Sunday.

Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg has joined a huge protest march in Spain to demand more action from governments against climate change.

Young people from across the world, local labor union members and others took part in the march on Friday in Madrid, where the COP25 UN climate change conference is underway.

The participants demanded governments take concrete and immediate measures against global warming.

The 16-year-old Thunberg was forced to pull out of the march halfway as crowds of reporters and people gathered to get a glimpse of her. She has inspired many young people around the world to fight against climate change.
She took to the stage and addressed the participants.

She said, "The hope is not within the walls of COP25, the hope is out here with you." She added, "We are the ones who are going to bring change."

At a news conference before the march, Thunberg said, "The climate crisis is still being ignored by those in power." She said she hoped the COP25 meeting will lead to something concrete.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has made her first official visit to the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland to pay her respects to the victims.

On Friday, Merkel, accompanied by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, laid flowers and offered a prayer at the "death wall," where a number of inmates were shot to death.

She said Germany has an unending responsibility to remember the crimes committed, clearly name the perpetrators, and keep the victims in a dignified memory.

At least 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed by Nazi Germany at the concentration camp during World War Two.

Merkel is the third incumbent head of a German government to visit the site. She pledged to donate 60 million euros, or about 66 million dollars, to help conserve it.

Her visit comes at a time when anti-Semitic crimes are on the rise in Germany. Observers say Merkel appears to have made the visit to draw attention to the history of Nazi Germany.

The United Nations has expressed concerns over Iran's handling of recent anti-government protests and called for independent and impartial investigations.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet commented on Friday about clashes in Iran last month between security forces and demonstrators protesting a fuel price hike.

She said the UN has information suggesting that at least 208 people were killed, including women and children, and that there are also unverified reports suggesting more than twice that number were killed.

Bachelet said the UN received footage apparently showing security forces shooting unarmed demonstrators in the face and vital organs -- "in other words shooting to kill."
She called those acts clear violations of international norms and standards.

Bachelet said at least 7,000 people reportedly have been arrested in connection with the protests. She said reports claim they are forced to confess, denied access to lawyers, and detained under harsh conditions. She called for their immediate release.

The Iranian government has admitted there were deaths during the protests, but hasn't provided details.

In a briefing in Geneva, the high commissioner's spokesperson, Rupert Colville, stressed the need for independent investigations.

A senior Iranian diplomat says he hopes the possible visit to Japan by President Hassan Rouhani later this month will help strengthen economic ties.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told NHK in Vienna, Austria, that arrangements are underway to fix a date for the visit, and he is hopeful it will be decided soon.

He said Japan is an economic partner and provider of technology to Iran, which has always been one of Japan's major oil suppliers.

Araghchi added Iran wants to maintain the same positive relationship with Japan, and hinted at a possible resumption of oil exports.

President Rouhani is set to visit Malaysia for three days from December 18. He is keen to visit Japan before or after that trip.

No Iranian president has visited Japan since Mohammad Khatami in October 2000.

Observers say Tehran wants to boost its flagging economy by strengthening its Japanese business ties.

But they say this will not be easy in the face of US economic sanctions on the country.

Leaders of the UK's ruling and main opposition parties clashed on Friday in their final head-to-head TV debate, less than a week out from Britain's general election.

Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader Boris Johnson and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn faced off before the vote next Thursday. The election could decide the fate of the country's departure from the European Union.

Johnson was emphatic his party will win a majority, and the UK will leave the European Union by the end of next month.

Johnson also insisted the Tories will get Brexit done, and "unleash the potential of the country."

Meanwhile Corbyn pledged he would draw up a new set of Brexit conditions with the EU, and hold another referendum within six months.

Johnson went on the attack against Corbyn for not clarifying his stance on Brexit. Corbyn was critical of Johnson's reform plan on the national healthcare system. He said a free trade agreement would lead to the entry of US companies into the medical system.

Opinion polls just after their debate show Johnson leading over Corbyn by 52 percent to 48 percent.

Asked about the section of the debate covering Brexit, 62 percent of respondents said Johnson did better, and 29 percent, Corbyn. As for the healthcare system, 38 percent said Johnson did better, and 55 percent, Corbyn.

The BBC moderator said both Johnson and Corbyn gave their best debate performances so far. The broadcaster suggested the debate did little to change the overall picture as shown by recent polls, in which the Conservatives have the edge over Labour.

A Buddhist temple in Kyoto is holding its annual year-end event serving cooked Japanese radish, or daikon, to pray for the good health of visitors.

The Senbon Shakado temple's "Daikodaki" is a celebration of the Buddha's spiritual awakening and is said to date back about seven centuries.

The ritual is held on December 7 and 8 every year at the temple's compound.

Chopped daikon was cooked with abura-age, or sliced deep-fried bean curd, in large pots each about one meter wide.

On Saturday morning, people formed long lines in freezing weather to buy a bowl of the hot dish.

A woman in her 60s from Otsu City, near Kyoto, said that the daikon is well-cooked and delicious. She added that she wants to stay in good shape and come to sample the dish every year.

Around 15,000 bowls are served during the 2-day event.
