Anti-government protesters in Thailand, who are calling for the reform of the monarchy, have marched to the base of a military unit that takes its orders directly from the King.

The rally took place on Sunday just outside the base of the 11th Infantry Regiment in the capital, Bangkok. Police say about 2,000 people took part.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn assumed control over the regiment when it was removed from the army's chain of command in October last year.

Protest leaders say the arrangement violates popular sovereignty as armed forces should report to the government chosen by the people. They say the regiment must be accountable only to the people.

Protesters have been increasingly angry since the parliament rejected a proposed constitutional amendment to reform the monarchy.

They are stepping up their calls for comprehensive reforms of how the monarchy manages its assets, and its relationship with the military.

The government appears ready to thoroughly crack down on the protesters by applying the law that bans insults of royal family members.

A 16-year-old demonstrator said he wants the monarchy to be reformed as actions of the King and other royals should be transparent and open to criticism.

Protesters are also demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who led a military coup six years ago.

Sources say the organizing committee of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics now estimates that the extra costs related to the Games' postponement will come to about 200 billion yen, or 1.9 billion dollars.

The original cost estimate for the Games was about 13 billion dollars, excluding a reserve fund.

The organizing committee was to shoulder 5.79 billion dollars, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government 5.73 billion dollars, and the central government 1.44 billion dollars.

Additional funds will be needed to renew the contracts for venues and to pay for labor and other items, as the Games were postponed by one year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The sources say the coronavirus measures that are being considered by a government-led panel are not included in the extra costs.

The organizing committee had already cut the Games' costs by about 288 million dollars by streamlining plans.

The committee says it hopes to announce the total expenditures by the yearend after discussions with the central and Tokyo governments on how to share the burden.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20201130_01/

Japan's Crown Prince Akishino has said he approves of his eldest daughter Princess Mako's marriage to her college classmate which was postponed.

Crown Prince Akishino spoke to reporters ahead of his 55th birthday on Monday.

He said the Constitution stipulates that marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes. He added that parents should respect their children's wishes to marry.

The Crown Prince added that his daughter's marriage schedule will be considered at a future date.

In September 2017, the Imperial Household Agency announced that Princess Mako was getting engaged to Komuro Kei.

But soon after, some media reported that his mother had financial problems. In February 2018, the agency announced that the string of events leading up to the wedding would be postponed.

In May last year, Crown Prince Akishino became first in the line of succession when his older brother, Emperor Naruhito, ascended the throne after their father's abdication.

Under the current system, any princess must leave the imperial household once married to a commoner.

Japan is coming out of the first weekend in a three-week period the central government has deemed crucial for curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

Several prefectural governments, including Tokyo and Osaka, have requested bars and restaurants serving alcohol to limit their hours.

In Nagoya in Aichi prefecture, the suggested changes began on Sunday. One customer said, "It's kind of sad that restaurants close early, but I'll try my best to have fun while adhering to the rules."

At a pub which usually stays open until 1 a.m., the manager said, "It's hard for us to have to close businesses early just when it's getting busy."

Tokyo's prefectural neighbor, Saitama, is due to make the same early closure request to businesses in some entertainment districts.

After hearing from experts on Monday, officials plan to announce a detailed plan that could see hours limited to 10 p.m., for 11 days beginning December 7.

Preventing the spread of the virus -- while working on economic recovery -- remains a challenge, though.

Business travel between Japan and China is resuming on Monday, allowing both short- and long-term stays.

Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu said, "It's extremely important that we resume international travel. I'm pleased about starting up business travel between Japan and China even if it begins in phased stages."

Chinese travelers with resident status in Japan made their way through Narita Airport near Tokyo on Friday.

One said, "A plane combines a closed, crowded and close-contact setting all in one, in my view. So I'm worried."

Japanese officials reported 2,066 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday. The health ministry says that as of Sunday, a record 462 people with severe symptoms were being treated with respirators and intensive care.

Japan and China are resuming business travel between the countries on Monday, as part of efforts to ease entry restrictions and promote economic activities.

Business people are now allowed to make trips for both short- and long-term stays.

Japan has taken the same measure with Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam.

An influx of Chinese travelers is expected at Narita Airport near Tokyo. About 20 flights to and from Chinese cities are operated weekly.

Some Chinese people who have resident status in Japan were seen arriving at the airport wearing white protective gear or raincoats.

Airline officials say up to half of passengers on a flight from China wear some kind of protective clothing.

Two major Japanese airlines will launch trials of a digital certificate for negative coronavirus test results to reduce the complexity of immigration procedures for international air travelers.

All Nippon Airways will start examining the usefulness of the smartphone app, "CommonPass", on its flights between Tokyo's Haneda Airport and New York as early as December. Japan Airlines is also considering a similar program.

The system can show the results for those who have taken PCR tests, as well as the names of testing facilities.

It includes passport numbers, users' current health status, itineraries and other pertinent information.

Users can quickly learn whether they meet entry requirements by holding their smartphones over data scanners.

Airlines around the world are considering introducing the CommonPass. US carrier United Airlines and Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airways are conducting trials.

Efforts to develop CommonPass are being supported by the World Economic Forum.

Challenges that must be overcome before a full-fledged launch of the app as a globally standardized format include cooperation among global quarantine officials and other authorities.

Powerful Japanese drum beats at a Buddhist temple in western Japan gave encouragement to people affected by the coronavirus and those responding to the crisis.

Six drummers performed on Sunday in front of about 300 spectators at the Jogyo-do Hall of Shoshazan Engyoji Temple in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. The building is a national important cultural asset.

Organizers took anti-infection measures, such as requiring the audience to wear masks and placing them more than 3 meters away from the performers.

One spectator said she enjoyed seeing the concert at the great location. Another said it seemed like the strong drumming would drive away the coronavirus.

One of the drummers said he is happy to be able to perform in public for the first time in a long while. He added that he hopes the event has lifted the spirits of people in the audience.

Japanese lawmakers have celebrated the 130th anniversary of the opening of the country's parliament.

The beginning of Japan's parliamentary system dates back to 1890, when members of the Imperial Diet gathered for the first time.

Sunday's celebration at the Upper House plenary hall was attended by Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and Princess Mako, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Akishino.

The Emperor said Japan and other countries around the world are facing a difficult situation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He added that the Diet, as the highest organ of state power, has become increasingly important as it works to carry out its duty to achieve national prosperity and world peace.

The Emperor expressed hope that the body will live up to the people's trust and expectations while remembering efforts by predecessors.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide spoke after the Emperor.

He said Japan has to overcome various challenges such as a declining birthrate and a shrinking and aging population.

He also addressed the pandemic and noted that Japan should further strengthen trust and cooperation with other countries so it can contribute to world peace and prosperity.

The Japanese Communist Party did not attend, saying the event was centered around the emperor in a way that does not reflect the country's current political system.

Restaurants in Los Angeles County in California have been banned from serving customers as the coronavirus continues to spread throughout the state.

Figures from Johns Hopkins University show that the United States is averaging more than 100,000 new daily cases. California is averaging more than 10,000 on its own.

Los Angeles County banned all on-site outdoor dining for three weeks last Wednesday. Indoor dining was already prohibited. This means customers can only order takeout or delivery.

At a restaurant which had set up outdoor seating in its parking lot two months ago, tables and chairs were put away as the stricter measures were introduced.

The owner of the restaurant said the state and federal governments had not provided any assistance.

A customer who placed a takeout order said he was buying from the restaurant to support its business. He also said he would stop dining out in order to stop the spread of the virus.

Strict measures have been introduced throughout the United States. In the state of New York, bars and restaurants serving alcohol have to close by 10:00 p.m.

Hospitals across Japan are under growing strain due to the surge in coronavirus cases.

The health ministry says that as of Wednesday, there were 7,826 inpatients with COVID-19 symptoms. That was a rise of more than 1,800, or 32 percent, from a week earlier.

Occupancy rates for hospital beds set aside for coronavirus patients increased in 40 of the country's 47 prefectures.

The highest rate, 68 percent, was in Hyogo, followed by Osaka, on 55 percent, and Hokkaido, at 47 percent.

The number of prefectures with a 25-percent occupancy rate or higher also climbed to 15, up from nine a week earlier.

An occupancy rate of 25 percent or more is one of the criteria for a Stage 3 alert, the second-highest level on the four-tier alert system set by the government's advisory panel to measure the strain on hospitals. Stage 3 means medical care systems could be greatly disrupted.

Japanese electronics giant Hitachi has developed an elevator that allows users to choose floors without physically pressing any buttons. The innovation is meant to reduce the risk of coronavirus infection.

A passenger can use the messaging application LINE to scan a QR code posted in the elevator hall to choose a floor.

The elevator arrives and takes the user to the requested floor without requiring any buttons to be pressed.

Hitachi is already selling a system that automatically selects floors by recognizing the user's face through a camera.

Kato Shingo, an engineer at Hitachi Building Systems, says a touch-less system can provide safety and comfort to customers.

Another Japanese electronics giant, Mitsubishi Electric, developed a system that calls elevators and takes users to pre-registered floors when they approach the elevator bank on the ground floor.

Users can register floor numbers on a smartphone application.

Ethiopia's prime minister has announced that government forces have retaken the capital of the northern Tigray region.

The conflict began on November 4, when the regional government of the ethnic minority there attacked a military base used by the central government.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed released a statement on Twitter on Saturday saying government forces are now in full control of the city of Mekelle.

He added that the main military operation is now concluded.

He also said the tasks ahead include rebuilding the city and bringing back residents who fled.
But little is known about the current situation on the ground, as the internet and other communications in the area are down.

The Reuters news agency reported that they could reach the leader of Tigray forces, who said that they are not giving up.

Observers point out that fighters may hide in mountains to continue their resistance, worsening the humanitarian crisis.

More than 40,000 people have fled the region to neighboring Sudan. The United Nations reports that food and fuel are running low.

The UN has asked the Ethiopian government to give aid organizations access to the region.

The Japanese government has dispatched a special envoy to a war-torn region of Myanmar to help carry out voting that was postponed due to fighting.

Myanmar held a general election on November 8 but the election commission postponed voting at all nine electoral districts in Rakhine State. The government has not said when voting in the region will take place.

Special envoy Sasakawa Yohei, who is chairman of the non-profit Nippon Foundation, arrived on Saturday in the northern part of Rakhine, where fighting has been fiercest. He is interviewing local residents to get a grasp of the current security situation in the region.

Sasakawa also plans to work with election authorities to ensure that voting is possible.
The region has been devastated by conflict since 2017, when state security forces cracked down on insurgents. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims were forced to flee as a result of the campaign, which the UN says was carried out with "genocidal intent."

Fighting has been ongoing, though a ceasefire is currently in place. Japan hopes that carrying out the vote will help bring stability to the region.

Barcelona Olympic gold medalist Koga Toshihiko gave a lesson on judo to about 200 children and teenagers in Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture on Sunday.

The city's sports association organized the event as part of its preparations for next year's Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Koga told the participants they shouldn't simply focus on winning, but should also try to become kind people with consideration for their opponents.

The children wore face masks as they practiced the "uchikomi" movement that is made before throws.

Koga said it is important to keep in mind how they use their legs and apply force with their bodies.

A 5th grader said the lesson was easy to understand and enjoyable, and she will keep practicing judo and remember to be a kind person.

Koga said he wants the participants to keep the spirit of judo in mind even when they are not practicing, and help those in need.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials say 561 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the capital on Saturday.

The officials say the number of people in serious condition in Tokyo stood at 67, up 6 from Friday. The figure marked the highest since a nationwide state of emergency was lifted in late May.

That marks the second day in a row the number of new infections in the capital has topped 500. Saturday's tally was the second highest after the 570 recorded the day before.

The total number of infections in Tokyo has reached 40,210, surpassing the 40,000 mark for the first time.

Japan's top court has rejected an appeal by a secretary to a politician accused of election violations. A suspended prison sentence will be finalized for the aide to Diet lawmaker Kawai Anri.

Prosecutors are also likely to file a lawsuit seeking to nullify the election win of Kawai, a former member of the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party, on the basis of guilt by association.

Presiding Justice Yamaguchi Atsushi at the Supreme Court's First Petty Bench dismissed the appeal filed by Tatemichi Hiroshi's defense against an 18-month prison sentence suspended for five years.

In June, the Hiroshima District Court found the defendant guilty of violating the election law for paying Kawai's campaign staffers more than the legal limit during her run in the Upper House election in July last year.

His defense appealed the decision. But the Hiroshima High Court upheld the lower court's ruling.

The district and high courts determined that Tatemichi ordered the illegal payments. They also dismissed the defense argument that the defendant's behavior warrants a fine, not a heavier punishment.

A fine does not prompt a nullification of an election victory through guilt by association.

Kawai Anri and her husband, former Justice Minister Kawai Katsuyuki, quit the Liberal Democratic Party in June. They were indicted the following month.

Prosecutors allege the couple distributed cash to members of local assemblies in Hiroshima Prefecture and asked them to secure votes for Kawai Anri in the Upper House election.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has urged the three branches of Japan's Self-Defense Forces to overcome boundaries between them in order to better respond to new challenges.

Suga addressed around 800 members of the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces on Saturday at an air review ceremony at Iruma Air Base in Saitama Prefecture.

Suga said the government is waging an all-out battle against the coronavirus pandemic. He commended the Self-Defense Forces for their response to the pandemic, citing their operations on the virus-plagued Diamond Princess cruise ship and affiliated hospitals. He called on them to keep up their efforts.

Referring to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Suga said Air Self-Defense Force jets achieved a world first by tracing the five rings of the Olympic symbol over the national stadium during the opening ceremonies. He went on to say that the government is determined to host the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics next summer as proof of humanity's victory over the virus.

Suga said the security situation around Japan is becoming increasingly tense and greater thought must be given to threats posed from outer space, cyberspace and electromagnetic wave technology.

Suga stressed the importance of lowering the boundaries between the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces to cope with these new challenges.

This year's air review was downsized on account of the pandemic. Demonstration flights were cancelled while no guests were invited.

People campaigning in Hiroshima have started collecting signatures to urge the Japanese government to sign and ratify the UN treaty banning nuclear arms. The treaty will come into force in January.

A group of about 30 people appealed for support near Peace Memorial Park in the western city on Saturday. Visitors were seen responding to their calls.

The drive is being led by the Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs.

Takahashi Nobuo of the organization's Hiroshima prefectural branch said he wants to build support by promoting the treaty's goal of achieving peace and a world without nuclear weapons.

Similar campaigns are planned in other parts of the country.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has collected 50 ratifications and will take effect on January 22. But signatories do not include Japan or nuclear armed nations, such as the United States.

The treaty bans all nuclear-arms related activities, including the development, possession, and use of such weapons.

People with intractable diseases in Japan want the government to ensure sufferers of all illnesses can receive care during the coronavirus pandemic, which is putting an increasing burden on the medical system.

The Japan Patients Association, which comprises 93 organizations of patients with intractable or chronic illnesses, submitted an urgent request earlier this week.

It says several million people nationwide suffer from intractable or chronic illnesses requiring continuous long-term treatment.

The JPA strongly urged the government to immediately strengthen measures to tackle the coronavirus, as well as secure the necessary funds and personnel for the medical system.
A government expert panel has warned that the increase in coronavirus patients could mean the lives of people with other diseases will be lost.

The JPA says in some cases, patients are being forced to put off hospital visits or treatment. It adds that others are refraining from doing so due to the fear of contracting the virus.

JPA executive Tsuji Kunio, who suffers from an autoimmune disease, says patients' lives will become endangered if they cannot go to medical institutions.

A collision between a leisure fishing boat and a cargo vessel at a port in eastern Japan has left one person dead.

Coast guard officials say the accident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday at Kashima Port in Ibaraki Prefecture.

All ten passengers and two crew members on the fishing boat were thrown overboard.

Patrol vessels, an aircraft and an emergency team were dispatched on a rescue mission. Nearby leisure boats also joined the operation.

The 12 people were pulled from the water. One passenger, a 46-year-old Tokyo resident, was confirmed dead at hospital.

Four passengers aged between 27 and 61 are reportedly being treated for bone fractures and other injuries.

The remaining passengers and the two crew members reportedly suffered minor injuries.

Most of the fishing boat's hull was submerged, leaving only its bow above the sea.

There were no reports of injuries on the cargo ship.

Outrage has risen across France after video footage of several police officers beating a Black man was released online.

The security camera video apparently shows three officers physically abusing music producer, Michel Zecler, for several minutes in a studio in Paris last Saturday.

Local media say the officers had been trying to detain Zecler for not wearing a face mask that is required in public spaces.

Zecler, who suffered facial injuries, said that the officers hurled racist insults as they bashed him.

French news agency AFP reports four officers were being held on suspicion of using violence.

President Emmanuel Macron on Friday condemned the alleged assault in a Facebook post, describing it as shameful.

The incident occurred amid controversy over a new security bill which would restrict the publication of facial images of police officers on duty.

Some say the legislation would make it difficult to gather evidence of police brutality.

Prime Minister Jean Castex has responded to mounting criticism by suggesting the need for revisions to the bill.

An Iranian scientist suspected to have played a key role in his country's nuclear program has reportedly been assassinated.

Iran's defense ministry says a vehicle carrying the top research and development division scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh came under attack on Friday. He died later in hospital.

Media reports say the attack took place in the outskirts of Tehran and that explosions and gunfire could be heard in the vicinity.

Fakhrizadeh is known as a nuclear technology research scientist. In the past, Fakhrizadeh has been named by the UN Security Council as being involved in the development of nuclear and ballistic missiles.

But the Iranian government denies developing nuclear weapons.

After the attack, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote in a Twitter post that there are serious indications of an Israeli role.

Also on Twitter, a military advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei suspects that Israel is trying to step up pressure on his country while the US administration under President Donald Trump, which regards Iran with hostility, is still in power.

Hossein Dehghan warned of retaliation, saying that Iran will descend like lightning on the killers... and make them regret their actions.

Iran's response could inflame an already tense situation.

The daily number of new coronavirus cases in Japan has been hovering near record levels. More than 2,500 cases have been confirmed so far on Friday.

Tokyo set a new daily record with 570 cases, bringing the total number of infections in the capital to nearly 40,000.

One key metric experts are focusing on is the number of serious cases. It reached 61 on Friday...the highest since a nationwide state of emergency was lifted in May.

About 40 percent of Tokyo hospital beds allocated for serious COVID-19 cases are now occupied and experts warn the recent increase is straining the medical system.

Shoko Tomohisa of Tokyo Women's Medical University said, "Emergency care centers will be busiest in December and January. It will affect their capacity for handling ordinary emergency patients. In some cases, they could fall into life-threatening conditions."

Tokyo officials have asked bars and restaurants that serve alcohol to close early starting this weekend.

Authorities in Osaka, Sapporo and Nagoya are making the same request.

The prime minister is urging people to take basic precautions, such as wearing masks, washing hands and avoiding the "Three Cs" -- closed spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings.

The central government says the next three weeks are crucial. It wants to avoid reaching the highest alert level, which could lead to declaring a state of emergency again.

Across Japan there are currently 435 seriously ill patients...another record high. Over 143,000 people have been infected since the outbreak began, with the death toll exceeding 2,000.

An increasing number of prefectures across Japan are asking for cuts in business hours and self-restraint on travel as coronavirus infections spike.

Many have requested shorter hours for dining and drinking establishments that serve alcohol.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has asked bars, restaurants and karaoke parlors that serve alcohol to close by 10 p.m. The request applies to those in Tokyo's 23 wards and the Tama area for 20 days, from Saturday to December 17. The government says it will provide 400,000 yen, or around 3,800 dollars, to operators that comply.

Osaka Prefecture is calling on such establishments in Kita and Chuo wards to cut their hours over the 15 days from Friday to December 11 and to close by 9 p.m. Those that comply are to receive 4,800 dollars.

The prefecture plans to ask establishments that do not follow trade-group guidelines for preventing infection to suspend operations.

The northern prefecture of Hokkaido made a shorter-hour request on November 7 for the Susukino entertainment district in Sapporo City.

Bars and nightclubs are asked to close by 10 p.m., and karaoke parlors and pubs are asked to stop serving alcohol at 10 p.m.

The request was initially to expire on Friday, but the Hokkaido government on Thursday decided to extend it to December 11.

It also asked bars and nightclubs in Sapporo with close contact between staff and customers to close through December 11.

The city of Sapporo is to provide 5,750 dollars to establishments that agree to remain closed during the period, and half the amount to those that shorten their operating hours.

Aichi Prefecture has decided to ask some establishments that serve alcohol in entertainment districts of Nagoya City to shorten their hours from Sunday to December 18.

Those that follow the prefecture's virus-prevention guidelines and comply with its request that they operate only between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. are to be paid up to 3,800 dollars. Those that do not follow the guidelines will be asked to suspend business.

These and other prefectures are also asking people to refrain from travel across prefectural or city borders.

The Hokkaido government on November 17 called on people not to travel to or from Sapporo unless they can take sufficient antivirus measures.

Residents of Sapporo are also being asked to refrain from non-essential outings.

The requests were to be in place until Friday, but the prefecture also decided to extend them through December 11.

On Tuesday, Hyogo Prefecture asked residents to avoid non-essential travel to Tokyo, Osaka and other areas where infections are spreading. It is also asking elderly residents and those with underlying health conditions to refrain from non-essential outings.

Nara Prefecture on Wednesday asked people not to visit Osaka Prefecture for leisure activities.

It says they should refrain from shopping or dining in Osaka City in particular.

Aichi Prefecture asked residents on Thursday to refrain from non-essential travel to the Tokyo metropolitan area, Osaka and Hokkaido. It also asked them to avoid non-essential visits to urban areas in the prefecture, including central Nagoya.

Young people in Thailand are staging a large-scale protest, reiterating their demand for reform of the country's monarchy.

The protesters are reacting sharply to the Thai parliament's rejection on November 18 of a draft to amend the Constitution that includes changes in articles related to the monarchy.

They're calling on people to join the rally in front of the head office of Siam Commercial Bank in the capital Bangkok. Young people began to gather there around 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn became the bank's major individual shareholder last December after acquiring a 23-perent stake in a share transfer from a royal family institution.

The demonstrators are demanding that such royal assets be handed back to the Thai people.

In an effort to curb the rally, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha issued a statement saying he is ready to apply all kinds of laws. He indicated intent to step up a crackdown by invoking a law banning insulting the monarchy.

Tension at the venue is getting high, with many police officers deployed.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam has delivered her annual policy address at the legislature in the absence of most pro-democracy lawmakers.

Four opposition politicians were removed from Hong Kong's Legislative Council earlier this month, after Beijing gave Hong Kong officials authority to disqualify legislators deemed a threat to national security.

This led to 15 other pro-democracy legislators to resign in protest. As a result, 41 of the remaining 43 council members are pro-Beijing. The legislature's checks on the government have drastically weakened.

During the address on Wednesday, Lam revealed a plan to set up a system to ensure that all civil servants pledge allegiance to the government.

She also announced a support measure to encourage young Hong Kongers to start businesses or join companies in the neighboring Chinese province of Guangdong.

During past policy addresses by the Hong Kong leader, pro-democracy lawmakers were usually seen shouting slogans to protest the government.

This year, some members of a pro-democracy group gathered in front of the council building before Lam started her address, but no major protests were seen.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has congratulated Joe Biden, who has declared victory in the US presidential election. Xi showed expectations for mending bilateral ties, which have worsened since President Donald Trump took office.

China's Foreign Ministry says Xi sent a message of congratulations on Wednesday.

Xi said, "Promoting healthy and stable development of China-US relations not only serves the fundamental interests of the people in both countries, but also meets the common expectation of the international community."

Xi said he hopes the two sides "will uphold the spirit of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect, and win-win cooperation."

The Chinese president also said he hopes the two countries will "manage differences, advance the healthy and stable development of China-US ties, and join hands with other countries and the international community to promote the noble cause of world peace and development."

Xi's message comes after a Foreign Ministry spokesperson congratulated the US president-elect and his running mate, Kamala Harris, on November 13.

Anti-government demonstrators in Thailand are stepping up criticism of the country's royal family.

The protesters, mostly young people, have been demanding reform of the monarchy and the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Police say about 12,000 demonstrators rallied outside a bank in Bangkok on Wednesday. The bank's major shareholder is King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

The protest leaders gave speeches questioning the king's lavish lifestyle.

A 26-year-old man said neither the king nor the government would listen no matter how much they protest. He vowed to keep fighting.

Before Wednesday's rally, the prime minister announced that his government would thoroughly crack down on the demonstrators, possibly invoking a law that forbids insulting or defaming the monarchy.

The protesters had initially planned to march toward the Crown Property Bureau, which manages the royal assets. They abruptly changed course to avoid clashes with the police.

They plan to stage another large-scale rally on Friday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to ask establishments that serve alcohol to close at 10:00 p.m. for 20 days, starting this Saturday.

In response to a resurgence of coronavirus infections in the Japanese capital, the metropolitan government plans to ask bars, restaurants and karaoke parlors in Tokyo's 23 wards and cities in the Tama area to agree to the measure.

Business owners will receive about 200 dollars a day if they follow the request. They can get about 4,000 dollars maximum.

The Tokyo government also plans to ask people to refrain from making non-essential outings.

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko says she will take short-term intensive measures to stem the spread of coronavirus infections in the Japanese capital.

Koike told reporters on Wednesday that Tokyo is in a very severe situation, with the number of critically ill patients surging.

She said the situation now requires stronger efforts. She added the priority is to protect the lives of people, prevent them from becoming seriously ill, and keep medical services from being overwhelmed.

The Metropolitan Government will ask restaurants, bars and karaoke parlors that serve alcohol to cut their hours for 20 days, starting this Saturday.

The measure will be in place for establishments in Tokyo's 23 wards and the Tama area in western Tokyo. Their operators will receive 400,000 yen, or about 3,800 dollars, for complying with the measure.

Koike asked residents of Tokyo to refrain from going out as much as possible, and when they need to, to take anti-infection steps.

She said people will have more opportunities to eat out and drink toward the year end and at around the New Year.

The governor called on people who feel unwell to refrain from attending parties. She made the same request to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions as well as their family members.

She also pledged to boost the safety net for people who lost jobs and operators of establishments who are struggling financially due to the pandemic.

Japan's Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has strongly urged Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to act positively on maritime and security issues around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Wang made a courtesy visit on Suga at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo on Wednesday. They talked for about 20 minutes.

Suga welcomed Wang, saying he's glad that visits by top officials of their nations have resumed after being suspended due to the coronavirus.

Suga said stable ties between the two countries is crucial to the region and the international community. He added that Japan wants to see the two countries assume their responsibilities.
Wang relayed messages from China's President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

He said bilateral relations are improving through communication between high-level officials and efforts by both nations. He also expressed hope for bilateral cooperation in various fields.

Wang brought up the issue of the coronavirus, saying people in Japan and China have helped each other and overcome difficulties together.

He said he's grateful for Japanese people's support for China's COVID-19 measures. He added that while the virus has not been fully contained, he is determined to completely defeat it.

Suga reiterated calls for China to act positively regarding maritime and security issues in the East China Sea, including around the Senkaku Islands.
Japan controls the islands. The Japanese government maintains they are an inherent part of Japan's territory. China and Taiwan claim them.

Suga also asked that China lift its import restrictions on food from Japan.

He expressed Japan's concern about the situation in Hong Kong. He called for China's cooperation in dealing with North Korean issues, including abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korean agents.

Suga and Wang also confirmed their cooperation for the success of next year's Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Games.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has urged athletes to continue their preparations for next year's Tokyo Games, despite the hardship they may be facing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The IOC released a video that shows Bach speaking from the Olympic Village in Tokyo.

The footage was shot during his recent 4-day visit to Japan. He met with Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide and inspected the athletes' village and the National Stadium.

Addressing athletes, Bach said, "This is the place to be nine months from now. I am very happy to greet you here from the Olympic Village in Tokyo."

He added, "You will never ever forget these moments in the Olympic Village in all your life."

Bach encouraged athletes to get themselves ready for "these Olympic Games and train even harder, even under these very difficult circumstances many of you, and most of you, are in at this moment."

With facilities of the village in the background, he said, "If you look around again, I think it's worth the effort."

He wrapped up the message by saying, "I am looking forward to seeing you at Tokyo 2020, in Tokyo 2020 plus one."

Bach has said the IOC is ready to cover the cost to help athletes to get vaccinated before setting foot in Japan.

Major trading firm Itochu has announced what may be a partial solution for the worsening problem of waste in the apparel industry. The company is teaming up with the Japan Weather Association to create a forecasting system that connects climate conditions with clothing demand.

The two partners say they hope to offer the service to clothing makers starting with their spring and summer wardrobes next year.

The massive data project combining weather and clothing sales information from the past will forecast demand for individual product lines from a week to up to 6 months ahead.

Itochu General Manager Mizouchi Tsuyoshi says, "We hope the service will help improve efficiency in supply chains. We also want to contribute to progress in sustainability."

The apparel industry typically plans manufacturing activity based on past sales results. Making the wrong forecast often leads to the mass destruction of inventory.

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Tokyo later on Wednesday. Japan is aiming to continue high-level bilateral talks.

Wang is the first Chinese high-ranking official to visit Japan since the launch of Suga's Cabinet.

The meeting comes at a time when concerns are growing over China's maritime activities in the East and South China Seas. Human rights issues in Hong Kong have also become an agenda.

On Tuesday, Wang met with Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu.

Motegi and Wang agreed that the two nations will work together to control the coronavirus pandemic.

They also decided to resume allowing business trips between Japan and China by the end of November.

Motegi explained Japan's position on the Senkaku Islands, where Chinese vessels repeatedly enter.

Motegi urged China to take the matter seriously, but Wang reportedly reasserted his country's sovereignty over the islands.

Japan controls the islands. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. China and Taiwan also claim them.

During the talk, Motegi conveyed his concern about recent developments in Hong Kong, including disqualification of four pro-democracy lawmakers from the territory's Legislative Council.

Motegi also urged China for more transparency about its policy in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Taiwan has started building its first domestically-developed submarine. President Tsai Ing-wen signaled that this will enhance deterrence against Chinese military activity near the island.

Members of the media were allowed to cover only Tsai's speech in a ceremony to launch the project outside a new exclusive submarine construction facility in Kaohsiung city on Tuesday.

Tsai said the project will demonstrate to the world Taiwan's strong will to defend its sovereignty. She said submarines are important equipment for the navy's deterrence of enemy ships surrounding Taiwan.

Tsai indicated that China's military is stepping up pressure by continuing to build up its forces and sending aircraft carriers to navigate waters near Taiwan.

Taiwan currently possesses four foreign-made older submarines.

Past administrations have been unsuccessful in their attempts to acquire new ones from overseas, partly due to China's influence.

The new vessel is expected to be delivered to Taiwan's military in 2025.

Japanese astronaut Noguchi Soichi says he is calling home every day from the International Space Station, just like fathers who have to live apart from their families because of job transfers.

Noguchi spoke to reporters on Tuesday, one week after starting a six-month stay at the ISS. This is his third space mission and first in about a decade.

He said he needs more time to get used to the space environment. He also said he misses the Earth and does his job thinking about home.

Noguchi and three others arrived at the ISS aboard US company SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule.

Now a record seven crew members are staying at the station.

Noguchi said they are making sure that they don't bump into each other when moving around.

He disclosed that Crew Dragon commander Michael Hopkins is sleeping in a cargo space because there are only six sleep stations.

Noguchi said there seems to be more items on the ISS than there were during his last stay, adding that his mission is to lay the groundwork for people to stay comfortably in space in the future.

China has launched an unmanned spacecraft to the moon, on a mission to bring back samples from the lunar surface.

State-run China Central Television reported that a rocket carrying the Chang'e 5 spacecraft blasted off from a space center on the southern Chinese island of Hainan at 4:30 a.m. Beijing time on Tuesday.

China considers lunar missions to be key to its space program. Last year, China became the first country to land an unmanned probe on the far side of the moon. Communication between a spacecraft on the far side of the moon and the mission control on Earth is difficult because radio waves cannot reach there.

Interest in missions to the moon has been surging. The United States is leading the Artemis program, which is an international program to build a new outpost that will orbit the moon and will send astronauts to the moon again. Japan has announced its participation in the program.

The Chinese government has an ambition of becoming a space power by 2030. Competition among China, the US and Russia is expected to intensify.

Hong Kong's key pro-democracy leaders were remanded in custody after they pleaded guilty in court on Monday.

Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and another colleague were senior members of the pro-democracy group Demosisto.

The three had been charged with organizing and inciting an unauthorized rally near the police headquarters in June of last year.

In their trial on Monday, they pleaded guilty to the charges. Acknowledging their guilt, the court revoked their bail and sent them to a detention facility.

Their sentencing is scheduled for December 2.

Before appearing in the court, Wong told reporters that neither prison bars, nor election bans, nor any other arbitrary powers would stop them from activism. He said what they are doing now is to explain the value of freedom to the world.

Chow expressed anxiety about the future. She urged people to support her fellow activists as they have made sacrifices and face severe punishments.

Hong Kong's pro-democracy movements are likely to face an uphill struggle with the detention of their vocal internationally known leaders.

The Japanese government plans to suspend travel subsidies for new bookings to the cities of Sapporo and Osaka, where coronavirus cases are increasing.

The government has been planning to exclude regions with a spike in cases from its "Go To Travel" campaign.

Experts say cases are on the rise in parts of Tokyo and Aichi Prefecture as well.

The government plans to work closely with local leaders to come up with responses in these regions.

The government is also considering other measures for regions where cases are rising. They include putting its "Go To Eat" voucher system on temporary hold, as well as asking restaurants and bars to reduce their hours or close.

South Korea has marked 10 years since North Korea's bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island off the western coast of the Korean Peninsula. The shelling killed four South Koreans -- 2 civilians and 2 marines.

Memorial events were held on Monday across the nation.

More than 100 people including government officials and the families of the victims prayed for the dead in an event at the national cemetery in Daejeon, central South Korea.

At the event, South Korean Defense Minister Suh Wook expressed his determination to establish a strong defense system to protect peace and prosperity of the peninsula. He said the past suffering should never be repeated.

He did not directly criticize the North. He said the two Koreas had put the times of confrontation and conflict behind them and are endeavoring to take an uncharted path toward peace.

The administration of President Moon Jae-in has been trying to improve bilateral relations.

In a comment released on Monday, opposition parties said South Korea's security situation has not improved and criticized what they regard as lukewarm responses to Pyongyang.

Buying clothes online means you don't need to lug your new items home. On the other hand, not being able to try them on first makes finding the right fit that little bit harder. Upscale Japanese apparel maker Sanyo Shokai may have the answer.

The firm is operating a physical outlet where all purchases are delivered. It's on trial through December 22 at a department store in Tokyo.

Sanyo Shokai hopes it appeals to people who shop during work days or while sightseeing. The move also streamlines the outlet's operations, because it does not need to carry large amounts of stock, which could end up going unsold.

Sanyo Shokai public relations official Kikuchi Emi says the firm hopes to adjust its business strategy after getting a better understanding of customers' needs.

Other apparel companies are making similar moves. Onward Holdings plans to open a store where customers try things on, but make purchases online.

New ways of shopping are being developed during a difficult time for the clothing industry, mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has announced that he's partially halting government programs brought in to boost travel and dining out.

Suga was speaking at a coronavirus taskforce meeting on Saturday. Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi and Japanese Tourism Minister Akaba Kazuyoshi were also in attendance.

Suga said the country's coronavirus cases have reached record levels and that utmost caution is still required. He said he will work with local governors to introduce stronger measures in areas seeing a rapid rise in infections.

On Friday, an expert panel on the coronavirus advised the government to review the "Go To" programs.

For "Go To Travel," Suga said he will call for a suspension of new reservations to regions seeing a resurgence of coronavirus cases. For "Go To Eat," he said he will urge local governments to suspend issuing meal coupons.

Suga said the central government will assist local governments financially to subsidize eateries that agree to limit their business hours and other measures. He said that the government will allocate a budget of about 481 million dollars for this purpose.

The prime minister added that should the virus be confirmed in medical or nursing care facilities, the government will pay for all residents and workers to be tested to prevent serious cases from occurring.

Suga instructed relevant ministers to work closely with local governments and do their utmost on measures to protect people. He went on to say that cooperation from citizens is vital so that even stronger measures that could limit social and economic activities do not have to be implemented.

He called on people to take thorough measures, including wearing facemasks, even while dining out, washing one's hands, and avoiding the "Three Cs" -- closed spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings.

A large number of people in Taiwan have taken to the streets to demand the government retract its decision to ease restrictions on imports of US pork products.

Organizers of the rally say about 50,000 people took part in the protest in Taipei on Sunday. The protesters marched roughly 2 kilometers from near the presidential office building to the headquarters of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP. Some of them carried pig-shaped balloons.

The government announced in August that it would allow US pork imports from January if they are found to contain a leanness-enhancing additive in amounts below a new safety standard. The government currently bans US pork imports from pigs fed on feed mixed with the drug.

The opposition Nationalist Party, or KMT, and consumers' groups are strongly opposing the government's decision, saying it will threaten food safety.

Opinion polls also show 60 percent of the respondents are against it.

President Tsai Ing-wen appears determined to forge ahead as scheduled. She argues the move is necessary to conclude a trade deal with the United States.

Issues of food safety regarding imports tend to spark hot debates in Taiwan.

Sources linked to the DPP say the public sentiment on US pork imports may affect the government's import restrictions on some Japanese foods. The measures have been in effect in response to the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in 2011.

Japan's Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has called on the Group of 20 major economies to push for the availability of coronavirus vaccines and treatments for people around the world.

Suga spoke at an online G20 summit chaired by Saudi Arabia. US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping were among the leaders who took part on Saturday, at the start of the two-day summit.

Suga said the G20 should clearly send a message that it will take the lead in responding to the pandemic, restoring economic growth, resuming international travel, and in creating a post-COVID international order.

Suga noted the importance of creating an environment in which everyone around the world can gain access to therapeutics, vaccines, and diagnostics.

He said this requires a comprehensive effort, including in development, production, and delivery of medications. He said Japan plans to help establish universal health coverage, in which high quality healthcare is provided to all.

Suga said no effort should be spared in order to achieve a global economic recovery and to resume international travel, while taking measures to prevent the spread of infections. He suggested that Japan will promote international rule-making in the digital field and strengthen supply chains.

On the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, which have been postponed to next year, Suga said he is determined to stage them, as proof that mankind has overcome the virus. He stressed that his government will go all-out to hold the Games safely and securely.

Adventure World in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture, announced that the male cub was born on Sunday. The baby is 20.5 centimeters tall and weighs 157 grams.

The cub's father, Eimei, is 28 years old -- well over 80 in human years. He broke his own world record set two years ago.

The zoo says a Chinese expert on panda childbirth was unable to come to Japan due to the coronavirus pandemic. Only Japanese staff were present at the birth of a panda cub for the first time in the zoo's history.

The zoo says the mother and her baby are in good health.

Adventure World director Imazu Koji says the staff must have been worried because the Chinese researcher could not be present at the birth. He says he is relieved that the cub has been safely delivered.

He called on people to take thorough measures, including wearing facemasks, even while dining out, washing one's hands, and avoiding the "Three Cs" -- closed spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings.

Iran has introduced new social restrictions to tame a fresh wave of coronavirus infections. The measures include a ban on nighttime driving in the capital, Tehran.

Infections have been resurging since September, with around 13,000 new cases reported in each of the past few days. The new restrictions took effect nationwide on Saturday.

In Tehran, authorities shut down all stores, except for those selling food, medicine, and other daily necessities. The closure will continue for at least two weeks.

Driving is banned between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m., except for buses and other public transportation services. Violators face a fine of 10-million rials, or about 37 dollars.

A man in Tehran said restrictions are necessary to protect people's health. But he said no work means no wages, and that the new steps will hurt livelihoods.

A man who works for a clothing firm said business has come to a complete halt, because the shops are shuttered. He added there is nothing he can do.

Concern is rising over the impact of the new measures. Iran's economy is already shrinking due to US economic sanctions. Inflation, caused by the plunge in currency value, has added to the turmoil.

Canada is having a spike in coronavirus infections. Its largest city, Toronto, will go into lockdown on Monday.

According to Johns Hopkins University in the United States, Canada began showing a clear uptick in infections in October. The daily tally has reached around 5,000 in recent days.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that the country is at risk of seeing caseloads go up, hospitals get overwhelmed, and more loved ones dying. He urged Canadians to cancel parties and group dining, and stay at home.

In Toronto, the rate of those testing positive for the virus topped six percent on average in the week up to November 14.

Under the city's lockdown measures, stores will be closed except for those selling daily necessities. Restaurants and bars will only offer takeout and deliveries.

The premier of Ontario, which includes Toronto, warned that the situation is extremely serious. He said action is required to avoid the worst case scenario.

US President Donald Trump has stressed his efforts to fight the coronavirus while promoting his moves to repair the US economy devastated by the pandemic.

Trump was speaking at the two-day virtual Group of 20 leaders' summit that opened on Saturday.

The White House released a statement after he spoke on the opening day. It says Trump highlighted how the United States "marshaled every resource at its disposal" to respond to the crisis, as well as the unprecedented economic recovery of the country on a foundation of tax and regulatory cuts.

It also says he spoke about the aggressive actions taken to develop vaccines and therapies at record-setting speed.

Further, it says Trump reaffirmed the importance of the G20 working together for future economic growth and prosperity.

But while he painted the situation in upbeat terms, the United States hit a record high of about 195,000 daily new cases on Friday.

It was Trump's second virtual appearance at an international conference since the November 3 US presidential election. His last appearance was at Friday's online APEC summit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says that the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh has stabilized with the deployment of Russian peacekeeping troops.

Earlier this month, Russia brokered an agreement by Azerbaijan and Armenia to stop fighting over the region.

Russian peacekeepers are on the ground to secure the truce.

Putin held an online meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and others on Friday.

He said that the situation is under control now that Russian troops are there.

He instructed the ministers to secure the safety of residents returning to Nagorno-Karabakh and provide humanitarian aid.

Lavrov visited Armenia and Azerbaijan on Saturday, meeting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and later with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

They reaffirmed their commitment to implement the agreement.

The United States, France and Russia had been jointly involved in brokering ceasefire over the region. But Putin maintains that his country acted alone this time because of the urgency of the situation.

Russia is apparently trying to increase its influence in the region with its military presence.

Holding a large festival may not be a wise idea during the coronavirus pandemic. But organizers of one of Japan's traditional festivals are test-staging the event, with ample social distancing.

The centuries' old Awa Odori dance festival in Tokushima City, western Japan, normally draws large crowds, eager to get a close view of a parade of energetic performers. The event was canceled this past summer, but organizers are hoping to stage the event next year.

Various infection-prevention measures were in place in the trial that began on Saturday. Stands that have a capacity of 900 were installed in a park, with all of the seats kept apart to ensure social distancing. Admission took place using digital tickets.

The dancers, wearing face guards, also kept a distance from each other as they performed to "shamisen" strings and flutes.

Although closely packed dancing is the trademark of Awa Odori, the spectators didn't seem to mind the change and were enjoying the dynamic performance.

Organizers are hoping that the festival can be held for four straight days as usual next summer.

Tokushima Mayor Naito Sawako, who heads the organizing committee, said guidelines should be drawn up to stage the festival under a "new normal." She said she hopes a successful Awa Odori will become a model for other festivals.

Senior officials from the United States and Taiwan have discussed ways to strengthen economic ties amid the ongoing rift between Washington and Beijing.

The two sides held the first meeting of a new Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue in Washington on Friday. US Under Secretary of State Keith Krach and Taiwan's Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Chen Chern-chyi attended.

The US State Department and Taiwan's authorities said in statements that they confirmed they will deepen their economic cooperation in fields such as supply chain structuring, infrastructure, energy, and 5G networks.

The US statement said future dialogues will help strengthen the US-Taiwan economic relationship and the shared commitment to free markets.

The Taiwan camp said the talks had elevated bilateral economic cooperation between the sides to a new level.

The Trump administration has been getting increasingly involved in Taiwan's security. It recently decided to sell military equipment to Taiwan, including missiles and drones.

The latest dialogue is seen as an economic bid by the US to put pressure on China.

The leaders of 21 Asia-Pacific countries and territories have vowed to use everything at their disposal to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, or APEC, issued a declaration on Friday.

The online meeting was hosted by Malaysia. Japan, the United States and China also participated.

The leaders agreed that the pandemic is one of the most challenging health and economic crises of modern times.

The declaration said, "We will continue to work together to use all available policy tools to support an inclusive, effective and sustained response to COVID-19."

The leaders also said they recognized "the importance of a free, open, fair, non-discriminatory, transparent and predictable trade and investment environment" to drive growth during the crisis.

The declaration is the first since 2017. There wasn't one in 2018 due to tensions between the United States and China. Last year's meeting was cancelled due to turmoil in host nation Chile.

Speaking at Friday's summit, Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide said the promotion of free trade and investment and increased connectivity based on international rules will support a free and open Indo-Pacific.

He said Japan aims to foster free trade in the Asia-Pacific through the full implementation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.

Xi delivered a speech at an online summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, or APEC, on Friday.

He said the world and Asia-Pacific region are experiencing profound changes, which are accelerating due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He said the global economy is in the doldrums, economic globalization is encountering headwinds, and unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise.

Xi called on the APEC members to promote free and open trade and investment, and make efforts for the early realization of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.

Japan's space agency announced that two more Japanese astronauts have been scheduled for long-term stays at the International Space Station.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said on Friday that Wakata Koichi will stay at the ISS sometime around 2022, and Furukawa Satoshi around 2023.

He said he will make full use of his experience to achieve the best result.

Furukawa said a long time has passed since his first space mission in 2011. But he actually feels as if the time passed very quickly.

He also said he always wanted to go to space again if he had a chance, so he has kept his motivation.

Wakata is 57 years old. The next mission will be his fifth -- the most number among Japanese astronauts.

Furukawa, who is 56 years old, is a medical doctor. The next space flight will be his second.

Noguchi Soichi has just begun his stay at the ISS. Hoshide Akihiko is due to start from next year.

Nintendo is asking businesses and organizations to refrain from politicizing the megahit game "Animal Crossing: New Horizons."

Some entities have been using it as a promotional platform. They include US president-elect Joe Biden's campaign, which created an official "Biden Island" in the run-up to the presidential election.

The Japanese gaming giant released new guidelines on its website about the game, which has sold more than 26 million copies worldwide since being released in March.

Users are asked to refrain from creating content that would be considered political, vulgar, discriminatory or offensive.

Nintendo says entities that do not follow the guidelines may be banned.
