The head of the Japan Medical Association has suggested the current nationwide surge in newly confirmed coronavirus cases could be a third wave of infections in the country.

Association President Nakagawa Toshio told reporters on Wednesday that there have been clear signs of a resurgence in infections since last month. He added that the situation in Hokkaido is particularly worrisome.

Nakagawa said a continued rapid rise in new cases across the country would inevitably strain the healthcare system.

He urged the government to detect signs of regional spreading as quickly as possible and take action before it's too late.

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has instructed his coronavirus taskforce to use all available means to prevent the spread of the virus, as the daily number of new cases increases ahead of the winter season.

Suga noted at a taskforce meeting on Tuesday that the national daily tally has exceeded 1,000 recently, and said the government needs to respond to the situation with the strongest sense of urgency.

He said hospital bed occupancy rates remain at about 30 percent even in prefectures where new infections are increasing. But he said the government would work to stay ahead of the virus based on previous experience with a view to protecting the lives and health of the people of Japan.

Suga said the government would take stronger measures against cluster infections based on emergency guidelines issued by a panel of experts the day before.

He also said they would ramp up the effort to raise awareness of high-risk situations to enable people to better ward off the virus.

Suga noted that coronavirus vaccines are under development by pharmaceutical companies in Japan and abroad, bringing the wisdom of mankind to bear against the virus.

He asked taskforce members to do all they can to prevent the spread of infections prior to winter, while ensuring that socio-economic activities are maintained.

NHK has learned that Japan, the United States and Brazil have agreed to step up collaboration in the fields of economy and security in the face of China's growing presence in Latin America.

Diplomats from the three nations held their first meeting under a new framework for dialogue in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia on Tuesday.

They reaffirmed that their countries share values such as democracy and the rule of law, and they will help form a rule-based international order in Latin America.

They also agreed to boost cooperation in building the next-generation 5G wireless communication networks. They are believed to be aiming to exclude Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei from the networks.

In 2018, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established ties with China.

Beijing is making infrastructure investments in Central and South American countries, and providing financial support to help them fight the coronavirus pandemic.

People in India's capital city of New Delhi are choking on the air, and the air quality is getting worse. The situation is raising serious health concerns amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Weather data from a public institution shows that the capital's air pollution stood at the highest-level category on Tuesday morning.
The index includes concentrations of PM2.5 particles and other pollutants.
The air quality in the region is particularly bad at this time of year. This is due to slash-and-burn farming and the massive amounts of firecrackers used in the annual Hindu festival known as Diwali.

Ahead of this year's Diwali, which starts this weekend, the National Green Tribunal, India's main environment court, imposed a ban of the sale and use of firecrackers. The ban applies to the capital and neighbouring cities and will be in effect until the end of November.

In addition to the air pollution, the capital has been fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

The number of daily infections in New Delhi has surged to nearly 8,000 since the beginning of November, while that of India as a whole has been decreasing.
A medical association estimates that the number of coronavirus infections has increased by more than 10 percent due to the air pollution.

Online shopping companies in China have launched their annual Singles' Day large-scale discount sales event.

The sales began on November 11, as they do every year. November 11 is a day to remember single people. It was chosen because of the sequence of number ones in the date. The number one symbolizes a single person in China.

E-commerce giant Alibaba Group held a countdown event in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province to declare the start of shopping on Wednesday.

The company says it recorded sales worth more than 38 billion dollars on Singles' Day last year. That was the firm's highest-ever single-day sales total.

Attention is focused on how much sales will grow this year, as more people appear to be shopping online, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Attention is also focused on the day's sales figures. Consumer spending is key for a robust recovery of the Chinese economy, which has been rebounding from the impact of the pandemic.
