Hong Kong's key pro-democracy leaders were remanded in custody after they pleaded guilty in court on Monday.

Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and another colleague were senior members of the pro-democracy group Demosisto.

The three had been charged with organizing and inciting an unauthorized rally near the police headquarters in June of last year.

In their trial on Monday, they pleaded guilty to the charges. Acknowledging their guilt, the court revoked their bail and sent them to a detention facility.

Their sentencing is scheduled for December 2.

Before appearing in the court, Wong told reporters that neither prison bars, nor election bans, nor any other arbitrary powers would stop them from activism. He said what they are doing now is to explain the value of freedom to the world.

Chow expressed anxiety about the future. She urged people to support her fellow activists as they have made sacrifices and face severe punishments.

Hong Kong's pro-democracy movements are likely to face an uphill struggle with the detention of their vocal internationally known leaders.

The Japanese government plans to suspend travel subsidies for new bookings to the cities of Sapporo and Osaka, where coronavirus cases are increasing.

The government has been planning to exclude regions with a spike in cases from its "Go To Travel" campaign.

On Monday, the governor of Hokkaido suggested that there would be no choice but to include Sapporo on the list of exceptions. The governor of Osaka indicated he will demand that the government do so for Osaka City.

Experts say cases are on the rise in parts of Tokyo and Aichi Prefecture as well.

The government plans to work closely with local leaders to come up with responses in these regions.

The government is also considering other measures for regions where cases are rising. They include putting its "Go To Eat" voucher system on temporary hold, as well as asking restaurants and bars to reduce their hours or close.

South Korea has marked 10 years since North Korea's bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island off the western coast of the Korean Peninsula. The shelling killed four South Koreans -- 2 civilians and 2 marines.

Memorial events were held on Monday across the nation.

More than 100 people including government officials and the families of the victims prayed for the dead in an event at the national cemetery in Daejeon, central South Korea.

At the event, South Korean Defense Minister Suh Wook expressed his determination to establish a strong defense system to protect peace and prosperity of the peninsula. He said the past suffering should never be repeated.

He did not directly criticize the North. He said the two Koreas had put the times of confrontation and conflict behind them and are endeavoring to take an uncharted path toward peace.

The administration of President Moon Jae-in has been trying to improve bilateral relations.

In a comment released on Monday, opposition parties said South Korea's security situation has not improved and criticized what they regard as lukewarm responses to Pyongyang.

Buying clothes online means you don't need to lug your new items home. On the other hand, not being able to try them on first makes finding the right fit that little bit harder. Upscale Japanese apparel maker Sanyo Shokai may have the answer.

The firm is operating a physical outlet where all purchases are delivered. It's on trial through December 22 at a department store in Tokyo.

Sanyo Shokai hopes it appeals to people who shop during work days or while sightseeing. The move also streamlines the outlet's operations, because it does not need to carry large amounts of stock, which could end up going unsold.

Sanyo Shokai public relations official Kikuchi Emi says the firm hopes to adjust its business strategy after getting a better understanding of customers' needs.

Other apparel companies are making similar moves. Onward Holdings plans to open a store where customers try things on, but make purchases online.

New ways of shopping are being developed during a difficult time for the clothing industry, mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic.
