Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has announced that he's partially halting government programs brought in to boost travel and dining out.

Suga was speaking at a coronavirus taskforce meeting on Saturday. Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi and Japanese Tourism Minister Akaba Kazuyoshi were also in attendance.

Suga said the country's coronavirus cases have reached record levels and that utmost caution is still required. He said he will work with local governors to introduce stronger measures in areas seeing a rapid rise in infections.

On Friday, an expert panel on the coronavirus advised the government to review the "Go To" programs.

For "Go To Travel," Suga said he will call for a suspension of new reservations to regions seeing a resurgence of coronavirus cases. For "Go To Eat," he said he will urge local governments to suspend issuing meal coupons.

Suga said the central government will assist local governments financially to subsidize eateries that agree to limit their business hours and other measures. He said that the government will allocate a budget of about 481 million dollars for this purpose.

The prime minister added that should the virus be confirmed in medical or nursing care facilities, the government will pay for all residents and workers to be tested to prevent serious cases from occurring.

Suga instructed relevant ministers to work closely with local governments and do their utmost on measures to protect people. He went on to say that cooperation from citizens is vital so that even stronger measures that could limit social and economic activities do not have to be implemented.

He called on people to take thorough measures, including wearing facemasks, even while dining out, washing one's hands, and avoiding the "Three Cs" -- closed spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings.

Daily cases topped the 8,000 mark in the city earlier this month.

The New Delhi government has also announced that it will secure an extra 1,400 intensive care beds.

Pfizer says the vaccine is 95 percent effective against the virus, based on the final analysis of a worldwide clinical study.

The company says no serious safety concerns were found.

US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar has suggested the vaccine could be distributed within weeks, with priority going to healthcare workers and the elderly.

Senior officials from the United States and Taiwan have discussed ways to strengthen economic ties amid the ongoing rift between Washington and Beijing.

The two sides held the first meeting of a new Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue in Washington on Friday. US Under Secretary of State Keith Krach and Taiwan's Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Chen Chern-chyi attended.

The US State Department and Taiwan's authorities said in statements that they confirmed they will deepen their economic cooperation in fields such as supply chain structuring, infrastructure, energy, and 5G networks.

The US statement said future dialogues will help strengthen the US-Taiwan economic relationship and the shared commitment to free markets.

The Taiwan camp said the talks had elevated bilateral economic cooperation between the sides to a new level.

The Trump administration has been getting increasingly involved in Taiwan's security. It recently decided to sell military equipment to Taiwan, including missiles and drones.

The latest dialogue is seen as an economic bid by the US to put pressure on China.

The leaders of 21 Asia-Pacific countries and territories have vowed to use everything at their disposal to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, or APEC, issued a declaration on Friday.

The online meeting was hosted by Malaysia. Japan, the United States and China also participated.

The leaders agreed that the pandemic is one of the most challenging health and economic crises of modern times.

The declaration said, "We will continue to work together to use all available policy tools to support an inclusive, effective and sustained response to COVID-19."

The leaders also said they recognized "the importance of a free, open, fair, non-discriminatory, transparent and predictable trade and investment environment" to drive growth during the crisis.

The declaration is the first since 2017. There wasn't one in 2018 due to tensions between the United States and China. Last year's meeting was cancelled due to turmoil in host nation Chile.

Speaking at Friday's summit, Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide said the promotion of free trade and investment and increased connectivity based on international rules will support a free and open Indo-Pacific.

He said Japan aims to foster free trade in the Asia-Pacific through the full implementation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has suggested for the first time that China is positive about joining the trans-Pacific free trade pact known as the TPP, or CPTPP.

Xi delivered a speech at an online summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, or APEC, on Friday.

He said the world and Asia-Pacific region are experiencing profound changes, which are accelerating due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He said the global economy is in the doldrums, economic globalization is encountering headwinds, and unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise.

Xi called on the APEC members to promote free and open trade and investment, and make efforts for the early realization of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.

He said his country will favorably consider joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership, or CPTPP.

US President Donald Trump has joined an online summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. This is Trump's first appearance at an international conference since the November 3 presidential election.

The White House issued a statement following the APEC summit on Friday. It says, "In his address, President Trump reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to building on our unprecedented economic recovery from COVID-19, as well as promoting peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region through strong economic growth."

The statement added that Trump and other leaders endorsed a new policy that will make free and fair trade the focus of the APEC agenda for the next two decades.

Trump, who has shown skepticism toward multilateral trade deals, has touted his commitment to free and fair trade. He has demanded China and other countries act to correct trade imbalances with the US.

Trump's previous appearance at an APEC summit was in 2017, the year he took office.

The White House says Trump will take part in an online summit of the Group of 20 countries on Saturday.

Japan's space agency announced that two more Japanese astronauts have been scheduled for long-term stays at the International Space Station.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said on Friday that Wakata Koichi will stay at the ISS sometime around 2022, and Furukawa Satoshi around 2023.

Wakata said in an online news conference that space travel is a rare opportunity and he feels inspired.

He also said serving as a JAXA vice president enabled him to learn about the role and direction of manned space flights from a broader perspective.

He said he will make full use of his experience to achieve the best result.

Furukawa said a long time has passed since his first space mission in 2011. But he actually feels as if the time passed very quickly.

He also said he always wanted to go to space again if he had a chance, so he has kept his motivation.

Wakata is 57 years old. The next mission will be his fifth -- the most number among Japanese astronauts.

Furukawa, who is 56 years old, is a medical doctor. The next space flight will be his second.

Noguchi Soichi has just begun his stay at the ISS. Hoshide Akihiko is due to start from next year.

Nintendo is asking businesses and organizations to refrain from politicizing the megahit game "Animal Crossing: New Horizons."

Some entities have been using it as a promotional platform. They include US president-elect Joe Biden's campaign, which created an official "Biden Island" in the run-up to the presidential election.

The Japanese gaming giant released new guidelines on its website about the game, which has sold more than 26 million copies worldwide since being released in March.

Users are asked to refrain from creating content that would be considered political, vulgar, discriminatory or offensive.

Nintendo says entities that do not follow the guidelines may be banned.
