British media have reported that Britain is set to increase the number of nuclear warheads it can stockpile. They say the British government will make the announcement in a review of foreign and security policies that will be published on Tuesday.

Britain's Trident submarine-launched ballistic missiles are currently equipped with the warheads, which are believed to number about 180.

The British government reportedly plans to replace old warheads and to build four new nuclear submarines to replace current models.

In its 2015 review, the government said it would reduce the number of nuclear warheads to 180 or fewer by the mid-2020s.

The Daily Telegraph quotes an expert on nuclear policy as saying that the increase, if confirmed, would be a significant reverse of the steady disarmament progress since the end of the Cold War.

A full year has passed since a national emergency was declared in the United States to tackle the spread of the coronavirus.

Then President Donald Trump made an announcement on March 13, 2020.

The virus, however, has continued to spread, in the early phase mainly in New York City, where medical facilities struggled to treat the growing number of patients.

At present, the US has the highest number of infection cases and fatalities in the world.

Reported cases total over 29.3 million, and more than 530 thousand people have died from the virus.

The daily tally of new cases in March has fallen to around 50,000 from the peak in January.

Director of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention Rochelle Walensky has repeatedly called on Americans to continue taking precautions.

But states are moving to ease restrictions, reopening businesses, allowing indoor gatherings and lifting mask mandates.

President Joe Biden plans to have as many Americans as possible vaccinated soon in order to put the country on a path to something closer to normal by July.

The US began administering vaccines in December after they were developed and tested with unprecedented speed.

By Friday, more than 130 million doses were made available and about 35 million people, or about 10.5 percent of the total US population, have been vaccinated.

Among the people who are 65 or older -- who tend to develop serious symptoms when infected -- 32.4 percent have been inoculated.

But the ratio of vaccinated people has not yet reached the level required for herd immunity that would continually contain the spread of the virus.

A survey by an international federation of nurses associations suggests that about 3,000 nurses have died from the coronavirus across the globe.

The International Council of Nurses has published results of the survey about the situation nurses are in across the globe. The publication comes one year after the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.

The council says it has recorded nearly 3,000 COVID-19 deaths among nurses in 60 countries. But it says the true figure is likely much higher, citing a lack of data in many countries.

The council also says large numbers of nurses are leaving the profession due to such factors as burn-out and stress.

The ICN estimates that the global nurse shortage could be widened to nearly 13 million across the globe.

It urges governments to provide more support for nurses by offering better working conditions and taking other means.

ICN President Annette Kennedy said she is deeply concerned about the state of the nursing profession. She said the strain that nurses are under is unacceptable. She added that governments must now repay the nurses' dedication and commitment.

Many people in Tokyo and surrounding areas have taken to social media to report seeing what appeared to be a fireball shooting across the night sky.

Eyewitnesses posted about the phenomenon that was observed shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday across the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo.

A video taken by an NHK camera in the capital's Shinjuku Ward shows a ball of light streaking from the upper middle of the screen to the lower left.

Another NHK camera in Tokyo's Chuo Ward captured similar footage, and the light is seen reflected on the surface of water.

Fujii Daichi, a curator who specializes in astronomy at the Hiratsuka City Museum, near Tokyo, said he believes it was a fragment of an asteroid that burned up in the Earth's atmosphere.

Footage taken by Fujii shows a whitish light slowly traveling across the sky for several seconds.

Fujii said the fragment may have become a meteorite, because it was very bright when it came into low atmospheric areas. He added that the shooting star was shining long enough for people to make wishes on it.

Some companies in Japan are launching their post-pandemic strategies to find workers to alleviate labor shortages.

MK Group offers taxi services in the Kansai region in western Japan. It plans to hire 2,000 new recruits for fiscal 2021 that starts in April. That's 2.5 times the usual number of new hires.

Daiichi Kotsu Sangyo in the city of Kitakyushu , Fukuoka Prefecture, also plans to hire 2,000 more people than normal in the coming fiscal year.

Both companies had been grappling with labor shortages before the coronavirus outbreak. They are aiming to secure workers now in anticipation of a post-pandemic recovery in the tourism sector.

Major home improvement store chain Cainz has set an additional quota of hires until February 2022 to meet the increasing demand for online sales.

A staffing firm, Outsourcing Technology, will hire 3,000 full-time workers in fiscal 2021 and send engineers to IT companies to cope with the rapidly growing digital economy.

Toshiba also plans to increase its hiring of new graduates in fiscal 2022, which starts in April next year, by more than 10 percent.

Meanwhile, the railway and travel industries, which have been hit hard by the pandemic, are reducing the number of new recruits.

Japan's labor ministry has decided to ramp up measures to prevent human trafficking that involves foreign technical interns working in Japan.

As of June of last year, there were about 400,000 foreign workers in Japan who had come to the country in the Technical Intern Training Program.

The labor ministry says there were cases in which trainees were forced to work for long hours at lower wages and virtually barred from escaping.

Last month, the ministry sent a notice to local labor bureaus instructing them to step up measures against such practices.

The ministry suggested that labor standards inspection offices and an organization that refers trainees to businesses jointly monitor and investigate if suspected human trafficking cases are reported or trainees seek protection.

The ministry said serious cases should be investigated and then referred to prosecutors, and that cooperation with police should be strengthened if foreign workers are allegedly victimized by violence or confinement.

The US State Department noted in an annual report issued last year that Japanese authorities failed to identify a single trafficking case in the Technical Intern Training Program despite persistent reports of forced labor.

The labor ministry says it will take seriously the US findings that Japan's effort to crack down on human trafficking is insufficient and it will work harder to eliminate abuses of the human rights of foreign trainees.

More than 100 women who graduated from a university last March have gathered at their alma mater for a formal commencement exercise.

Their graduation ceremony at Kyoto Women's University was canceled last year due to the spread of the coronavirus.

But about 160 women out of 1,406 graduates of last year came back to school on Saturday to take part in the special ceremony.

President of the university Takeyasu Hideko delivered a heartfelt, but delayed, congratulatory address. She said that they must have felt a sense of loss for not having the opportunity to celebrate as they were entering a new life.

On behalf of the graduating students, Hino Akane thanked the university and its faculty. She said that it was very sad that they could not gather together last year to bid farewell to teachers and friends. She thanked the school for the special ceremony.

The graduates sang the school song as they left the school.

One of them who works for a bank in Osaka said that after the ceremony she finally feels that she actually graduated.
