Tokyo prosecutors are set to question two Americans who arrived in Japan and were arrested on charges of helping the former Nissan chairman to escape from the country.

US court documents show that Carlos Ghosn paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to a company managed by one of the two men.

The prosecutors on Tuesday arrested Michael Taylor, a former Green Beret, and his adult son Peter after arriving in Japan following their extradition by US authorities.

The two are accused of smuggling Ghosn out of Japan in a private jet to Lebanon in December 2019. Ghosn was facing financial misconduct charges and had been released on bail.

The court documents show that two months before the escape more than 850,000 dollars were remitted from a bank account belonging to Ghosn to a company owned by Peter Taylor.

Other documents also show that the son of the former chairman sent cryptocurrency worth about 470,000 dollars to Peter Taylor from January to May of last year.

That means the Taylors' side has received a total of more than 1.3 million dollars.

Ghosn denies the charges filed against him. He remains in Lebanon, despite an international wanted notice from Interpol. Officials in Beirut say he is allowed to stay in the country, where he has citizenship.

The crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in Myanmar is growing increasingly violent.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss how to move toward ending the crisis, which began with a coup on February 1.

Security forces in Myanmar have been increasingly resorting to force to rein in widespread pro-democracy demonstrations. The UN human rights office says 18 people were killed on Sunday alone.

Foreign ministers, including a representative from Myanmar, attended the online meeting. This is the first ASEAN meeting on the issue since the coup.

Some member countries have expressed concerns about the mounting violence.

But the organization has a policy of not interfering in the internal affairs of its members.

The United States wants the UN Security Council to hold "intense" discussions on the situation.

The US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said, "The Security Council, I was pleased, expressed in a unanimous press statement its concerns about the situation in Burma. So I hope to use our time as president of the Council to push for more intense discussions on that issue."

Last month, the Security Council issued a statement expressing concern about the one-year state of emergency announced by Myanmar's military. But it did not criticize the coup due to opposition from China and Russia.

The Japanese government plans to carefully consider until the last moment whether a coronavirus state of emergency can be lifted in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures. It believes the infection situation has not improved enough.

The emergency declaration issued is due to expire on March 7.
The central government lifted the state of emergency for six other prefectures in central and western Japan last Sunday.

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko and the governors of Saitama and Chiba expressed concern about lifting the declaration. They feel that the decline in the number of infections is not sufficient.

The Kanagawa governor said he intends to closely monitor the situation in the neighboring prefectures.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide said on Tuesday that he will closely check the numbers of infections and talk with relevant people including experts. He said he will make the final decision by himself.

Suga said he will discuss the situation with the minister in charge of the country's coronavirus response, Nishimura Yasutoshi, and health minister Tamura Norihisa on Wednesday.

The central government notes that Chiba is at stage four in hospital bed occupancy, the highest alert level.
The government plans to listen to opinions of each of the governors, and is expected to hold an expert panel meeting on Friday.
