In Afghanistan, the Taliban caretaker government has announced new measures aimed at cracking down on protests.

The new regime has issued a notice saying it is introducing a permit system for demonstrations amid an increase in rallies by Afghan women demanding the right to education and work.

The interior ministry says the protests pose a threat to security and are disrupting people's lives.

To obtain a permit, the purpose and location of a demonstration will have to be reported to authorities 24 hours before the rally at the latest. Violators will face strict legal action.

The latest move comes as the Taliban announced they are reviving a ministry that was known for its harsh suppression of women's rights during the previous Taliban-ruled government from 1996 to 2001.

A Japanese non-governmental organization says it has resumed its aid activities in Afghanistan, after suspending them following the Taliban's takeover of the country on August 15.

The NGO, Peshawar-kai, has long been helping Afghan people with healthcare, agriculture and building irrigation channels. The organization is based in Fukuoka City, western Japan.

The group continued its activities even after the fatal shooting of its local representative, Japanese doctor Nakamura Tetsu, in 2019.

Peshawar-kai Chairman Murakami Masaru told a news conference on Thursday that the group resumed lemon harvesting work this month. He added that safety had been confirmed.

He said the group had already resumed medical care activities on August 21, and that he hopes to resume building irrigation channels as soon as possible.

But Murakami said local staff are having difficulty withdrawing money from banks amid the chaos in Afghanistan. He said the shortage of cash is making it difficult for them to pay salaries, buy vehicle fuel and rent heavy machinery.

Murakami pointed out that Afghanistan is suffering from a severe drought, and people desperately need help. He said the organization will continue its activities, as the top priority is saving lives there.

An increasing number of attacks targeting the military and police in Myanmar have occurred after the country's pro-democracy forces issued a call for a revolt against military rule.

The National Unity Government declared the launch of a "defensive war" against the military junta in an online speech on Tuesday. Myanmar has been in continued unrest since the military seized power in February.

The NUG acting president noted in the speech that the military continues to carry out killings, torture and detention.

Video footage from local media said to be taken in the central city of Monywa on Thursday shows an explosion near a security unit on the roadside.

A local armed group reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they killed one security trooper and injured two others.

Local media reported several facilities owned by a military-related cell network company were attacked in the northwestern region of Sagaing and central region of Magway. A series of explosions have also been reported in the country's largest city of Yangon.

A human rights group in Myanmar estimates 1,054 people have been killed in the country through Wednesday after the military crackdown following the coup.
