Japan and India have agreed to oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East China Sea and South China Sea, amid China's growing maritime activities.

Japan's Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held their first in-person talks in Washington on Thursday. They will take part in the Quad summit with the leaders of the United States and Australia at the White House on Friday.

Suga said India is an important partner for Japan and the two countries share basic values.

Modi responded that the relationship with Japan is very important for India, as well as the stability and prosperity of the region and the world.

Suga and Modi confirmed that the two countries will work closely with the other Quad nations to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

The Japanese and Indian leaders also agreed to step up cooperation on anti-coronavirus measures and digital technology, and to hold "two-plus-two" talks of their defense and foreign ministers at an early date.

North Korea's foreign ministry has rejected South Korea's call to formally declare an end to the Korean War.

In a statement released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Friday, Vice Foreign Minister Ri Thae Song said a declaration of the termination of the war is premature.

This followed South Korean President Moon Jae-in's call to declare a formal end to the war in his speech at the United Nations on Tuesday. He said dialogue and cooperation were key to starting the peace process on the Korean Peninsula.

Ri said, "The DPRK's just measures to bolster up the capability for defence to cope with the US military threat to bring us down by force are described as 'provocations' while the arms buildup escalated by the US and its vassal forces to threaten the DPRK is justified as 'deterrent.'"

The statement said, "Nothing will change as long as the political circumstances around the DPRK remains unchanged and the US hostile policy is not shifted."

North Korea apparently wants US sanctions against it to be lifted and the annual US-South Korea joint military drills to be terminated before the war is declared over.

Asian stock indexes rallied on Thursday after concerns eased regarding the financial strains of China's second-largest real-estate developer Evergrande Group.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index, where the firm is listed, ended 1.19 percent higher from Tuesday's finish. Wednesday was a holiday.

Benchmark indexes in Shanghai, Sydney and elsewhere also climbed.

Investor worries over the Chinese economy and financial markets receded after Evergrande announced on Wednesday that it would make an interest payment on a yuan-denominated bond due the next day.

But market players caution that the firm will default unless it completes similar payments on dollar-denominated bonds due on Thursday within a grace period of 30 business days.

They add that the situation will remain uncertain as Evergrande must also pay large amounts of interests on other bonds.
