Officials in Los Angeles County in the US state of California have begun giving coronavirus vaccinations to children aged five to 11.

The move comes after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officially recommended the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children in that age group on Tuesday.

At an elementary school near Los Angeles on Friday, children accompanied by their guardians received their first shots.

A 9-year-old girl said that she was scared because she doesn't like needles. But she said the vaccine will prevent her from getting COVID.

Her mother said that there are cases occurring among children, and that she thinks "the pros outweigh the cons" at the moment.

But some parents remain cautious about pediatric vaccine shots.

The Los Angeles County Public Health Director, Barbara Ferrer, said there is little possibility of serious health problems resulting from the inoculation.

Ferrer said the vaccine was 91 percent effective.

She said that if children experience side effects, they will be mild and similar to those experienced by people in their teens and adults.

More than half of the US states have filed lawsuits challenging a vaccine mandate for private company employees issued by the administration of President Joe Biden.

The mandate requires that workers at businesses with more than 100 employees be vaccinated against COVID-19 by January 4 or face weekly tests.

At least 26 states with Republican governors or attorneys general had filed suits with federal courts by Friday to block the mandate.

They argue that the measure tramples civil liberties guaranteed by the US Constitution.

The attorney general of Texas called requiring private businesses to impose vaccinations an abuse of federal power.

Speaking to reporters, White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stressed the importance of the mandate.

She said the administration "clearly has the authority to protect workers," adding that it is trying to leave the pandemic behind and save American lives.

China's government has announced sanctions against Taiwan's premier and two other senior officials, who it accuses of inciting hostility across the Taiwan Strait.

On Friday, China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said Beijing will sanction people on a list of what it called "stubborn secessionists" in accordance with law.

She said Taiwan's Premier Su Tseng-chang, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and Legislative Speaker You Si-kun are among those who have instigated cross-strait confrontations and worked with external forces to divide the country.

Zhu said they will be prohibited from entering China, including Hong Kong and Macao.

Companies and sponsors linked to people on the list will not be allowed to make profits on the mainland.

Taiwan has recently had close contact with the West, including the United States.

Taiwan Foreign Minister Wu visited Europe last month. And this week, the European Parliament sent its first official delegation to Taiwan.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council reacted sharply to the sanctions. It said, "We do not accept intimidation and threats from an autocratic and authoritarian region."

The council said it will take countermeasures if China tries to destroy Taiwan's democracy and freedom.

A former commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command has reiterated his belief that China's threat to Taiwan will manifest within the next six years. Retired Admiral Philip Davidson suggests deploying offensive missiles in areas including Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

In an interview with NHK on Thursday, he said it is hard to predict the exact moment that China's threat becomes clear, but that he thinks it will be within the next six years.

Davidson made similar comments at a congressional hearing in March.

Asked about China's increasing military presence around Taiwan, he told NHK that the activities are designed to both stress Taiwanese forces and signal to the international community that force is not off the table.

Davidson said the United States has long been obliged to assist with the training of Taiwan's defense forces.

He also said, "You cannot deter by defenses alone. You have to demonstrate that you can impose cost on any adventurism by an adversary that requires us to have some offensive capability."

Davidson suggested that offensive missiles should be stationed along what is known as "the first island chain" extending from Japan to Taiwan and the Philippines.

But he said deployment in Japan is a policy decision best left to the nation's government and people.

Vietnam's first urban railway line has started operating in the capital of Hanoi. It is expected to ease traffic congestion in the city.

The railway opened on Saturday and connects Cat Linh station with Yen Nghia station, a distance of 13 kilometers. There will be no charge to travel on the line for the first 15 days.

There is mounting demand for urban rail transportation in Vietnam, a country plagued by worsening vehicular traffic congestion.

A number of railway projects are underway in the country with assistance from Japan and China.

But they have fallen behind schedule and initial plans have been revised due to problems with the purchase of land and ballooning construction costs.

The new railway line in Hanoi was constructed with assistance from China.

Local media say the project has been delayed 12 times since it began in 2011.

A university student on board the train said that he is thrilled to be able to ride on an urban rail train which travels smooth and fast.

He said he has waited for a long time, but it was worth of it.

Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg has attended a mass protest in Glasgow, Scotland, where the COP26 UN climate change conference is underway.

The march was held on Friday, designated as Youth Day at COP26. It was organized by a Scottish youth organization. Local media say thousands of people took part.

The protesters held signs calling for immediate action and not choosing extinction.

After the march, Thunberg said, "The COP has turned into a PR event, where leaders are giving beautiful speeches and fancy commitments and targets, while behind the curtains, governments of the Global North countries are still refusing to take any drastic climate action."

The focus of COP26 is on whether delegates agree on plans that would keep the average rise in global temperatures within 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Negotiations go into full swing next week with the start of ministerial-level talks.

The UN Security Council has expressed concern about the deadly conflict in Ethiopia and called for talks toward a ceasefire.

Mexico's UN ambassador, the council president for this month, released a statement on Friday. It addresses the fighting that has been continuing since November last year between Ethiopian government troops and the ethnic minority forces that control the country's northern region, Tigray.

The statement says the council expressed "deep concern about the expansion and intensification of military clashes in northern Ethiopia."

It called on the parties "to negotiate a lasting ceasefire and for the creation of conditions for the start of an inclusive Ethiopian national dialogue to resolve the crisis and create the foundation for peace and stability throughout the country."

The council also expressed "serious concern about the impact of the conflict on the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia" and called for "safe and unhindered humanitarian access."

Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, is in Ethiopia to seek efforts to improve the humanitarian situation.

US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Jalina Porter told reporters on Friday that the US is alarmed by "the escalating violence and expansion of fighting" throughout Ethiopia. She also cited "the growing risk to the unity and the integrity of the Ethiopian state."

The US embassy in Addis Ababa has advised all US citizens to leave Ethiopia as soon as possible, saying the security environment is very fluid.

An albino activist has been sworn into the parliament of the African nation Malawi, a landmark achievement in a country where people with the condition continue to suffer widespread discrimination.

The AFP news agency says Overstone Kondowe is the country's first parliamentarian with albinism, a condition that limits the production of the pigment that colors the skin, hair and eyes.

Kondowe won a by-election last month. After being sworn in on Thursday, he pledged to inspire albinos to aim higher.

Kondowe founded an organization in 2016 that has lobbied the government to provide greater protection for albinos.

The superstitious belief in parts of Africa that certain body parts of albino people can confer magical powers has spurred violent attacks against them.

Amnesty International says that since 2014, more than 20 albinos in Malawi are believed to have been murdered.
