Welcome back to NHK Newsline. Here's the latest we have for you at this hour.
We start from the Middle East. Israel's military has launched a wave of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip.
Multiple sources say at least 200 people have been killed, including many children. According to Gaza health authorities, Israel's Defense Forces began the attacks early on Tuesday. They say they are targeting strongholds belonging to the Islamic group Hamas. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he instructed his forces to take strong action. He said it follows Hamas's repeated refusal to release Israeli hostages and its rejection of all proposals led by the US. It's believed to be the largest assault on the territory since a ceasefire took effect in January.
Casualties are being reported in multiple areas across the enclave. Hamas said in a statement that Israel has overturned the ceasefire agreement, exposing the hostages to an unknown fate. In an interview with Fox News, a White House spokesperson said the Trump administration was consulted by the Israelis on the attacks.
US President Donald Trump says Iran will be held responsible for attacks by the Houthis in Yemen against American ships and other targets. Trump made the comments on social media on Monday. He said every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon as a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of Iran and warned of dire consequences. Trump earlier ordered US military action against the Houthis, accusing the group of waging terrorism. The Houthis said they responded with missile and drone attacks on a US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea. The Pentagon says its initial wave of strikes hit over 30 targets, including training sites and weapons storage facilities. It says the operation will continue in the coming days.
We will use overwhelming lethal force until we have achieved our objective.
A Houthi-affiliated media outlet says the US attacks have left 53 people dead.
Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Ismail Bakai on Monday called the US military strikes a crime. He reiterated that Iran is not involved in the Houthi attacks. Bakai also commented on a letter that Tehran says it received from Trump last week. He said Iran will respond through the appropriate channels.
Trump says he wrote to Iran to request talks over the country's nuclear program.
The attacks on the Iran-backed Houthis are seen as a means of pressuring Tehran to accept.
Japan's foreign minister has urged his Iranian counterpart to take constructive action with the United States to peacefully resolve Tehran's nuclear issue. Iwaya Takeshi talked with Abbas Arachi on the phone on Monday. He spoke about Iran's protests against US calls for a nuclear deal amid pressure for tighter sanctions. Iwaya expressed deep concern about the current situation and stressed the importance of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. He said Japan would continue to make diplomatic efforts toward peace and stability in the region.
The two ministers agreed to continue multi-layered dialogue between their two countries, including at the foreign ministerial level. Japan hopes to prevent relations between Washington and Tehran from deteriorating further.
US President Trump says he'll speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. Trump says they are approaching a critical stage as the US presses Moscow for a ceasefire deal on Ukraine.
What's happening in Ukraine is not good, but we're going to see if we can work a peace agreement, a ceasefire and peace, and I think we'll be able to do it. I'm speaking to President Putin tomorrow morning.
Trump said many elements of a deal have been agreed on, but much remains. He said earlier that the two leaders will discuss land power plants and dividing up certain assets. The White House press secretary says they've never been closer to a peace deal. She also confirmed that Trump will broach the issue of a nuclear power plant on the border with the Russian leader.
The Kremlin spokesperson says preparations for the conversation are underway, but did not give further details.
Andrei Rudenko met with North Korea's foreign minister Choe Son Hui on Saturday. The two are believed to have discussed when Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will hold their next summit. Putin visited Pyongyang in June of last year. He said at the time that he hoped the next meeting would be held in Moscow. The two countries are strengthening economic and military ties based on a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty that took effect last December. A North Korean delegation led by the Minister for External Economic Relations left for Russia on Monday.
Trump says thousands of pages of files related to the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy will be released on Tuesday. Trump says the documents total about 80,000 pages.
People have been waiting for decades for this. I don't believe we're going to redact anything.
Trump made the announcement while visiting the Kennedy Center in Washington. He said he thought it was the appropriate place to make the announcement. Trump signed an executive order in January instructing the government to fully release classified documents related to the former president's assassination. The Associated Press reports that the vast majority of over 5 million pages of records housed at the National Archives have already been made public. But it says researchers estimate that 3,000 files have not been fully released.
Major League Baseball is back, but this year, America's pastime is making its return far from home. The season kicks off in Tokyo with a game on Tuesday between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs. The showdown will feature Otani Shohei and some of the sport's biggest Japanese stars. Otani will be in the lineup for the Dodgers as their designated hitter. The two-way sensation is starting the season solely as a hitter, but he hopes to return as a pitcher at some point. He's coming off a historic season, in which he won his third MVP award.

The Dodgers are the reigning World Series champions and expectations are high for another deep run. The Cubs are hoping to make the postseason for the first time in five years. Tuesday's game will be an all Japanese matchup on the mound with Yamamoto Yoshinobu pitching for the Dodgers and Imanaga Shota getting the call for the Cups. It will be the first time in MLB history that two Japanese pitchers face off as Opening Day starters.

Suzuki Seiya will also take the field for the Cubs. Last year, he became the first right-handed batter from Japan to hit more than 20 home runs for two straight seasons. The two-game opening series in Tokyo will be the first official MLB games held in Japan since 2019. Well, season opener excitement has reached fever pitch in Tokyo, and the MLB is more than happy to feel the love. As professional baseball struggles to stay on top back in the US, here in Japan, it's bigger than ever.
Fans from across Japan and around the world are here to catch what's said to be a standout matchup with some of baseball's biggest stars. The tickets aren't cheap.
.....................................................That's why ...... Tokyo .....................
For those who couldn't score seats, Tokyo's iconic Skytree might have the next best thing. Fans can watch the game in a space set up to celebrate the MLB.
I couldn't go to the season opener, so I'm planning to enjoy it here.
There's also professional battingmachines, rare memorabilia for all the stars, and tons of merch for the two-way superstar himself.
I adore Otani so much, almost as if he was my real son.
I'm very much looking forward to Otani's home runs and seeing great plays from all the Japanese players.
This is the first time Japan has hosted part of the MLB's regular season in more than half a decade. But recently, the league has been playing ball abroad more and more, with events in South Korea, Mexico and the UK.
NHK senior sports commentator Ozawa Masanao says the league faces stiff competition for US audiences, especially from the NFL and NBA.
you know The competition to win popularity in the world of professional sports is heating up. And in addition to that, the salaries for professional players keep rising.
So, it was just inevitable that the MLB would want to expand its market where possible.
Baseball has also been a dominant pastime in Japan for decades making it a natural market for expansion. It's also where some of its biggest talent is coming from.
There are five top performing Japanese MLB players that will be taking part in this match-up. So this was just really great timing on the league's part to choose to bring their game to Tokyo in this moment.
Ozawa says Japanese players have been changing the game and not just the biggest name on the roster.
Ohtani is of course a super player and well known, but there are also other great players to watch. Sasaki Roki throws a 165 kilometer per hour fastball. That's the kind of pitch that was once thought only possible in a comic book. That's why fans in Tokyo are on the edge of their seats, whether it's in the Dome or at home.
And now let's have a check of the weather with our meteorologist Jonathan Oh. So Jonathan, we saw a mix of sun and clouds in Tokyo Tuesday, but winter is still part of the picture in Japan. What is the latest?
I don't think so. We have a couple more low pressure systems continue to move toward the east, bringing that cold air in, which means we're going to be seeing the possibility of some snow, especially toward the north, right?
We're not talking about this a huge amount in the central area of Tokyo, but the Greater Tokyo area may be dealing with the snow possibilities as we go through.
Wednesday. Rain in Niigata, snow possibilities of Sendai and Tokyo and also the Fukuoka with a high topping off of just 9 as we go through Wednesday.
Meanwhile, snow is the story back toward the western areas of the United States. We had this low pressure system that came off the Pacific and is moving across the Rockies. Now I want to bring to your attention that this low is going to be in business by Wednesday as we go into the central portions of the United States and a pick up on that warm air and really hit. That cold air and so that collision can lead to possibility of severe thunderstorms as you want to keep an eye out for that.
In the meantime, rain in Denver with high of 17 for Tuesday, 27 in Oklahoma City, that 10 degree contrast really indicating that spring season and the instability that will be the concern as we go throughout the next couple of days.
Quick note on Europe, high pressure controlling the central portion of the content. We have this low stuck back toward the Iberian Peninsula to still bring some rain as we go throughout there on Tuesday to places like Madrid and Lisbon.
That's a look at your forecast. Hope you have a good day wherever you are.
