China's state-run Central Television has broadcast an interview with experts who say the virulence of the Omicron coronavirus variant is low. The move is widely seen as a sign that Beijing may ease its strict anti-coronavirus measures further.

In an interview repeatedly broadcast on Tuesday, an expert says the virulence of the currently spreading Omicron has obviously weakened compared with the prime strain and other variants.

The expert says over 90 percent of those infected with the Omicron are asymptomatic or show very mild symptoms and that the current variant is very close to seasonal influenza.

Another expert suggests there is no need to transfer all infected people to hospitals or isolation sites like before.

The expert says it is possible for those with mild symptoms to recuperate at home while taking cold remedies and other medicines.

Chinese media previously reported on the need for the government to continue its zero-COVID policy, stressing that Omicron has stronger transmissibility.

Anti-coronavirus measures are under review across the country following nationwide protests against the harsh policies.

Japan's Air Self-Defense Force has sent two fighter jets to the Philippines, the first time it has dispatched them to the country. The two nations are deepening their security ties as China increases its regional presence.

Two F-15 fighter jets arrived on Tuesday at Clark Air Base on Luzon Island after taking off from an airbase in southwestern Japan. The aircraft flew for about four hours and were refueled in the air.

Japan's ASDF and the Philippine Air Force began joint exercises last year. The two jets will not take part in the drill this time.

Japan has also begun transferring air surveillance radar systems to the Philippines.

Lieutenant Colonel Arisawa Shotaro of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force called the Philippines "a very important partner" of Japan's that shares common values.

"We want to expedite cooperation, inter-operation and mutual understanding, and contribute to stabilization in the region," Arisawa said.

SDF officials say the Philippines is the third country to which Japan has sent its fighters, after the United States and Australia.

Japan has missed its chance to advance to the quarterfinals at the men's soccer World Cup in Qatar. The Samurai Blue lost to Croatia on penalties.

This was the third World Cup to pit Japan against Croatia which was the runner-up in 2018.

Japan's Maeda Daizen opened scoring just before half time. Croatia equalized the score in the 55th minute.

Japan's goalkeeper Gonda Shuichi saved a shot from the 2018 tournament's MVP, Luka Modric.

Mitoma Kaoru shot from a speedy dribble, but was blocked by the goalkeeper.
The game went to penalties. Japan missed three of its spot kicks, Croatia just one.

Japan will not advance beyond the round of 16 but it did finish at the top of its group, beating former champions Germany and Spain.

FIFA praised Japan's performance in the tournament, commenting "what a journey they've had" and thanking the team for adding some new World Cup moments.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20221206_02/

South Korean police have arrested two former senior officers in connection with the deadly Halloween crowd crush in Seoul. The two are accused of ordering subordinates to destroy evidence.

The incident in the capital's Itaewon district on October 29 left 158 people dead, including two Japanese citizens. Experts believe a lack of plans to ensure safety on the day of the incident was among the factors leading to the tragedy.

South Korean media outlets reported the arrests on Monday of the former officers, one from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and another from the Yongsan Police Station, which oversees Itaewon.

The two are alleged to have ordered that a report pointing out the danger of an accident happening during Halloween festivities be deleted in the wake of the incident.

Arrest warrants had been sought for other officials as well, including a former chief of the Yongsan Police Station, on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death and injury. But the court has rejected the request.

The media outlets said a special police team is also investigating a top Yongsan district official and a Fire Department chief.

Investigators are working to get to the bottom of what actually caused the incident.

Malaysia's new prime minister has launched his Cabinet. Anwar Ibrahim wants to focus on the economy, but his critics are already up in arms about who he picked as deputy.

The new Cabinet members held their first official meeting on Monday. Anwar, who also serves as finance chief, named his 28 ministers last week. He pledges to revive the economy and reduce people's living costs.

The government is a coalition including rival alliance Barisan Nasional, whose leader Ahmad Zahid Hamidi serves as co-deputy prime minister. Observers say the move is an attempt to find some middle ground.

But Zahid is on trial for charges including graft and money laundering. And he was a close aide to former prime minister Najib Razak, who was jailed over a multi-billion-dollar corruption scandal.

Critics accuse Anwar of undermining his own pledge to end corruption.

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his finance and defense ministers have agreed on the scale of the next five-year defense budget.

Kishida met with Finance Minister Suzuki Shunichi and Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu on Monday. They agreed to work to secure 43 trillion yen, or about 319 billion dollars, for defense spending between fiscal 2023 and fiscal 2027. That's a 50-percent increase over the current five-year budget.

Last week, Kishida instructed ministers to raise the annual defense and other related budgets to two percent of the country's gross domestic product in fiscal 2027.

The Defense Ministry initially demanded 48 trillion yen, citing the need to boost the nation's defense capabilities.

The Finance Ministry, meanwhile, initially asked the government to keep it under around 35 trillion yen to maintain fiscal health.

Government officials said they will explore ways to fund the budget increase, with tax revenue and other expenses in mind. The officials seek to come up with a comprehensive blueprint by year-end in coordination with the ruling parties.

Earlier, Kishida met with Yamaguchi Natsuo, the head of Komeito which forms a ruling coalition along with Liberal Democratic Party, which Kishida heads. They agreed on a plan for the total defense budget and its funding to be finalized by a council led by their deputies.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20221206_25/

In China, measures to curb coronavirus infection have been eased further in Beijing and Shanghai, even as the number of positive cases remains high.

Anti-coronavirus measures are under review across China following nationwide protests in late November against the government's harsh "zero-COVID" policy.

From Tuesday, people in the capital Beijing and commercial hub Shanghai no longer need to show negative PCR test results when they enter public places, such as shopping facilities and office buildings.

But they still need to show proof of negativity at schools, medical institutions and eateries. People who visit commercial facilities must leave a record by scanning QR codes at the site with their smartphones.

China has mandated regular PCR testing to detect infections, and imposed tough restrictions on movement in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.

But infections are spreading, with about 27,000 new cases confirmed nationwide on Monday.

The question is whether the Chinese government will ease its anti-coronavirus measures further at the risk of a new surge in infections.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20221205_20/

Authorities in China have begun loosening some measures against coronavirus infections across the country.

The move comes as the government indicated its intention to "optimize" anti-infection measures last week. Beijing's strict "zero-COVID" policy has recently sparked protests in various cities.

Starting from Monday, Shanghai dropped PCR test requirements for public transportation, including subways, and outdoor public facilities, such as parks.

Test requirements for accessing buses and subways were also lifted in the capital, Beijing.

But people in both cities still must take PCR tests every few days and show a negative test result to enter commercial facilities and office buildings.

The southern city of Guangzhou has also significantly eased its lockdown measures in the wake of occasional clashes between residents and the police.

Chinese authorities apparently hope loosening restrictions will help ease public dissatisfaction and boost the country's slow economic recovery.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20221206_13/

Sales of new Japanese cars in China took a hit in November amid the government's strict zero-COVID policy and a renewed wave of infections.

Toyota says it sold about 140,000 new vehicles last month, down 18.4 percent year-on-year. That marks the first decline in six months for the company.

Honda saw its new car sales drop 42.8 percent to roughly 78,000 vehicles. Nissan's sales plunged by 52.5 percent to about 47,000 units.

This is the first fall in unit sales in China for all three automakers since May, when the country's largest economic center, Shanghai, was put under lockdown.
The number of COVID cases in China has been rising, at one point last month logging a record daily high. That led to temporary closure of some dealerships, and reduced customer traffic at those that were still open.

Key words : drone allow shopping
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20221205_15/

Japan has moved to relax restrictions on drone flights. Owners are now allowed to operate drones beyond their line of sight in populated areas if they meet certain requirements.

The revised civil aeronautics law came into effect on Monday. It allows drones to carry out so-called level four flights, the least restricted category in Japan.

Level three only allowed drones to fly beyond the operator's line of sight in unpopulated areas. The change is expected to help people who are unable to go shopping. It could also help ease the shortage of drivers in the logistics field.

Manufacturers have been developing safer drones that qualify for level four flights. The president of Tokyo-based drone maker, ACSL, says the law's revision marks the first step toward a massive expansion of drone use.

Washiya Satoshi said "In order to continue to fly at higher risk levels, as a manufacturer, we need to ensure safety just like that for aircraft. It's also important to develop functions that improve convenience."

Drones intended for level four flights must pass safety checks and the operators will have to take practical and academic tests. No tests have been conducted yet and the government expects that it will be the end of March at the earliest before level four flights begin.

Police in central Japan have arrested three former nursery school teachers on suspicion of assault on young children at the school.

The suspected assaults occurred when the three women were working for Sakura Hoikuen in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture. They all quit by the end of November.

Police officers searched the school on Sunday morning. They say the suspects pushed children in the face, held them upside down by their feet, and hit their heads in June.

The nursery school says that the three were engaged in 15 kinds of ill-treatment between June and August this year.

City officials and the nursery school say the teachers yelled at one-year olds, pinched their cheeks, held them upside down by the feet and forced them to touch the bottom of one child who had symptoms of hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

The teachers also allegedly threatened a four-year-old with a box-cutter.

They reportedly told the nursery school that they had meant to discipline or teach the children how to behave and that they were sorry.

The police suspect that the three had repeatedly committed abusive acts.

Indonesian authorities have raised the warning for Semeru volcano on Java Island to the highest level on a four-tier scale after Sunday's eruption.

The country's National Disaster Management Agency says the plumes of ash from the 3,600-meter volcano reached a height of about 1,500 meters, and pyroclastic flows have been observed.

Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has banned all activities within an 8-kilometer radius of the peak and is calling on residents to evacuate.

Mount Semeru erupted on December 4th a year ago, causing pyroclastic flows that killed more than 50 residents and forced over 10,000 people to evacuate.

Massive plumes of smoke are rising over the Indonesian island of Java after Sunday's volcanic eruption. Two-thousand people have been forced to flee, and their villages are carpeted in ash.

Every community within eight kilometers of Mount Semeru is on highest alert. Authorities are extending that area in the southeast because of a dense mix of lava, ash and hot gas.

Authorities have banned all activities and called on people to evacuate to shelters. The ash was so thick it blocked out the sun. It's also combining with the monsoon rains to create a messy paste.

There are no confirmed casualties so far.

Mount Semeru's last major eruption a year ago left 50 people dead. The latest comes after a series of earthquakes, one of which killed hundreds.

The policy chief of Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party is set to visit Taiwan.

Hagiuda Koichi plans to begin a three-day trip on December 10.

It will be the first visit to Taiwan in 19 years by a person who holds one of the LDP's three key posts of secretary-general, policy chief or head of the General Council, except for the period when the party was not in power.

In 2003, Aso Taro, LDP's policy chief at the time, traveled to Taiwan.

Japan and Taiwan have no diplomatic relations.

Hagiuda will give a speech on security issues at a gathering in Taipei on Japan-Taiwan relations.

He will also meet with officials from the semiconductor industry.

Arrangements are underway for talks with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

Hagiuda is expected to use the visit to appeal for stronger cooperation between the two sides amid China's growing military pressure on Taiwan.

Hagiuda is known to have been close to former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who had placed importance on ties with Taiwan. The policy chief apparently wants to show that he will carry on the late prime minister's stance.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20221202_50/

Japan's ruling coalition said the country should be able to launch a "counterstrike" if it's targeted by an armed attack. It's set to be one of the biggest changes to Japanese security policy since the end of World War Two.

The main Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner Komeito held talks on Friday. They said Japan's current system is poorly equipped to deal with growing threats in the region.

LDP's Kumada Hiromichi said, "Compared with a decade ago, the situation has gotten more dangerous, as North Korea has been launching more ballistic missiles. So we agreed Japan should have counterstrike capabilities to defend itself."

Lawmakers agreed on how Japanese "counterstrikes" would be limited to self-defense and could never be used preemptively. Instead, an armed attack would have to have already been initiated against Japan or its ally, the US. The "counterstrike" could only be directed against military targets with the minimum force necessary to neutralize the threat.

Some experts have raised concerns, asking for more clarity on what constitutes an "initiated attack" on Japan. They also question whether a counterstrike would violate international law.

The government says it's planning to finish revisions of documents outlining its proposal by the end of the year.

Sunday marks the third anniversary of the killing of a Japanese doctor and aid worker, Nakamura Tetsu. A probe by Afghan authorities has not made any progress in resolving the case.

Nakamura, the local head of a Fukuoka-based NGO, Peshawar-kai, was fatally shot in the eastern province of Nangarhar on December 4, 2019. He was 73 years old.

He worked for many years on healthcare and farmland regeneration projects, including the construction of irrigation systems.

An eyewitness told NHK that four or five men ambushed and shot Nakamura. One of the gunmen saw Nakamura lift his head when they were about to leave and he was shot again.

The Afghan intelligence agency and other authorities carried out the initial investigation of the incident.

The Taliban said it would take over the probe after the group regained power in August last year. But no progress has been made.

The eyewitness says Nakamura dedicated himself to Afghanistan, and the Afghan people want the Taliban to investigate why he was killed.

The Taliban's deputy spokesperson, Bilal Karimi, told NHK that the previous government should have investigated the killing more thoroughly in the early stages.

A former Japanese abductee who returned from North Korea 20 years ago has called on Japan's government to take action to immediately bring back other people who were abducted.

Chimura Yasushi made the urgent appeal at a rally in the city of Fukui, central Japan, on Sunday.

Chimura and four others were repatriated after Pyongyang admitted to the abductions at a Japan-North Korea summit 20 years ago. He is from Fukui Prefecture.

Japan's government says North Korean agents abducted at least 17 citizens in the 1970s and 1980s. The whereabouts of 12 remain unknown.

Chimura expressed a sense of crisis as no abductee has returned to Japan since the five were repatriated.

The 67-year-old said the remaining abductees are aging and the issue will become a sad part of history unless they are saved now.

Chimura said the Japanese government needs to act now and he wants Japan and the North to hold talks to bring home as many abductees as possible.

Iizuka Koichiro, the son of abductee Taguchi Yaeko, made a similar appeal.

He said he has been unable to see his mother for 44 years and he wants people to know about those who are still waiting to be reunited with their loved ones.

The 45-year-old said the key to resolving the issue is realizing a Japan-North Korea summit. He said he wants the North's leader, Kim Jong Un, to stop procrastinating and to let the abductees return home.

Iizuka said he wants Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to tell the North in a firm manner that his government wants to take back its own nationals.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20221204_02/

Japan's government plans to promote exports of ornamental nishikigoi carp to meet its goal of increasing overseas shipments of cultivated products.

The government has drawn up a draft strategy aimed at boosting shipments of farm, forestry and fishery products, as well as processed food products, to an annual value of 2 trillion yen, or about 15 billion dollars, ahead of the original target of 2025.

The draft plan suggests that nishikigoi carp be added to 30 key export items, including beef, rice, and fruits that the government is promoting.

The proposal calls for the government to strengthen its support for ornamental carp producers and areas of production as the fish fetches high prices overseas.

The draft strategy also includes the establishment of an organization to monitor registration of licenses to grow certain varieties of agricultural products, and protections to prevent them from being used illegally abroad.

It also says that Japan's food labelling rules should be aligned with international standards.

The export value of Japan's of farm, forestry and fishery products, as well as processed food products, stood at about 7.5 billion dollars by October.

The value for 2022 is expected to surpass last year's record high.

The government aims to soon adopt an official strategy to achieve its goal earlier than had been initially planned.

Indonesia's Semeru volcano on Java Island has erupted. Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency posted an image on social media that shows plumes of white and grey ash soaring into the sky.

Australia's volcanic ash advisory center in Darwin estimates that the plumes of ash reached a height of about 15 kilometers.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says the eruption occurred at 9:18 a.m., local time, on Sunday and its Himawari-9 weather satellite observed the spread of the volcanic ash.

The agency is also checking whether the eruption has caused any tsunami that could affect Japan. It says no significant changes in tide levels have been observed along Japanese coasts so far.

Japanese weather officials add that no particular atmospheric pressure changes have been observed in the country since the eruption. A massive distant eruption can sometimes cause changes in atmospheric pressure, leading to tidal level changes.

But the officials say people should stay updated with the latest information.

The agency started releasing information on tide and atmospheric pressure levels around Japan after a massive distant volcanic eruption off the South Pacific nation of Tonga caused such changes in Japan. The agency releases such information if ash plumes reach a height of 15 kilometers.

Russian forces continue their fierce attacks in eastern Ukraine, and have likely made small advances in capturing a Ukrainian stronghold in the Donetsk region.

Donetsk Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko wrote in a social media post on Saturday that intermittent Russian shelling near the town of Bakhmut damaged regional administration buildings and left residents injured.

The British defense ministry posted its intelligence update on the same day, saying that "Russian forces continue to invest a large element of their overall military effort and firepower" along an approximately 15-kilometer-long front line around Bakhmut.

The ministry also said that in recent days, "Russia has highly likely made small advances on the southern axis of this assault."
It said that "the campaign has been disproportionately costly relative to these possible gains."

The ministry added that "there is a realistic possibility that Bakhmut's capture has become primarily a symbolic, political objective for Russia."

The Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, has made a similar assessment that Russian efforts to advance on Bakhmut "have resulted in the continued attrition of Russian manpower and equipment."

Ukraine presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted on Saturday that Russia has lost thousands of their troops near Bakhmut, which has "no strategic importance." He urged Russians to forget about Bakhmut.

In the southern region of Kherson, Russian forces continue to fire artillery shells toward the western side of the Dnipro River from where they withdrew last month.

The Kherson governor has posted an assessment on social media that Russian forces launched artillery volleys 28 times on Friday, damaging infrastructure and medical facilities.

The governor added that officials are helping residents evacuate on board trains and buses.

Japan's advance to the World Cup knockout stage with the win over Spain has come with several historic records for the Samurai Blue squad.

The win against the former World Cup champion came after Japan's victory over Germany, another former champion, while losing to Costa Rica in Group E.

According to the FIFA website and others, Japan became the first Asian squad to advance to the knockout round for two straight World Cups.

It is also the second time for Japan to finish the group stage at the top position since the 2002 World Cup, co-hosted by Japan and South Korea.

Japan's victory over seventh-ranked Spain also marked the first time the country beat a team in a single ranking.

The come-from-behind victories over Germany and Spain were also unprecedented for Japan in the World Cup.

During practice in Doha on Saturday, 37-year-old midfielder Luka Modric and 20-year-old defender Josko Gvardiol were seen doing one-touch passes. Modric was the MVP of the previous World Cup in Russia when Croatia advanced to the final but lost to France.

Defender Josip Juranovic told reporters before the practice that ball possession no longer matters since Japan beat Spain even though Spain controlled the ball 80 percent of the time.

He said his team needs to be prepared for Japan's excellent teamwork and speed.

Defender Borna Sosa said Japan's strength lies in teamwork but he will also analyze individual players and try to find weaknesses in the opponent.

A giant Christmas tree has been lit up in the Palestinian city of Bethlehem, which the Bible says is the birthplace of Jesus Christ.

The Christmas tree lighting ceremony took place on Saturday. It was held in front of the Church of the Nativity. The house of worship stands on the grotto, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

The event used to attract many visitors every year. But the coronavirus pandemic prompted authorities to impose a travel ban, and that kept foreign tourists away for two years.

Israel lifted the travel ban this year, so tourists can now enjoy the Christmas festivities in Bethlehem again.

A visitor from Denmark said that she came to experience Christmas in the Palestinian city. She added that she is praying for peace, as there are many crises raging on earth.

South Korean prosecutors have arrested a senior security official of former President Moon Jae-in's administration over the handling of the death of a fisheries official two years ago.

Former National Security Adviser Suh Hoon was arrested on Saturday for suspected abuse of power.

Suh is suspected of having ordered security officials to delete intelligence reports that contradicted the conclusion that the official died trying to defect to North Korea, presented by Moon's administration.

The official, a crew member of a fishery inspection vessel, was fatally shot by North Korea's military in September 2020 in the Yellow Sea, west of the Korean Peninsula.

South Korean coast guard officials initially said he was planning to defect. But they retracted the comment in June this year, saying there was no evidence to suggest that.

South Korean media say prosecutors are investigating allegations that Moon's administration sought to cover up the incident to avoid a deterioration of ties with the North. There is speculation that Moon may also be subject to a probe depending on the outcome of the investigation of Suh.

Members of the British Parliament have made an official visit to Taiwan for the first time in 16 years. The delegation met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday.

The bipartisan delegation is led by Alicia Kearns, who chairs the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee. It is visiting Taiwan for five days through December 3.

Despite opposition from Beijing regarding the visit, Kearns said in the meeting with Tsai that "it is entirely right that democracies engage in inter-parliamentary dialogue to better understand one another."

Kearns also noted that Britain will not only remain strong in its support to European neighbors, but will look beyond. She said that the British people "recognize and salute our valued friends across the Indo-Pacific as we lean in for mutual support," stressing the importance of reinforcing ties with Taiwan.

President Tsai acknowledged a recent speech made by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in which he expressed concern over geopolitical changes. She was apparently referring to a speech on Monday in which Prime Minister Sunak had said the "golden era of relations with China" was over.

Tsai said, "As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will do its utmost to ensure regional peace and stability."

Britain has recently been changing its approach to China and gradually making clear its stance of placing more importance on Taiwan. Last month, Trade Policy Minister Greg Hands visited Taiwan and held talks with the Taiwanese president.

The Japanese government has decided to offer a fresh aid package to Ukraine's neighbor Moldova worth about 2.9 billion yen or 22 million dollars.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio met with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Tokyo on Saturday.

Kishida saluted Moldova for accepting many evacuees from Ukraine amid Russia's invasion.

The aid will be used for assistance in the fields of healthcare, food and energy.

Kishida said Japan will also consider offering financial assistance that Moldova has been requesting.

Sandu said her country has been facing hardships in energy and other areas and thanked Japan for its support.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu is visiting Japan this week. In an exclusive interview with NHK, she said continuing solidarity with her country's neighbor Ukraine is crucial to limiting Russia's power.

Sandu has been in Japan since Thursday. She said Russia's energy resources are "being weaponized" against those who don't support the country's invasion.

She said, "We still have a contract with Gazprom, but they decided unilaterally to cut by half gas supply. And we are buying gas on market but the international prices are extremely high. For Moldova, this meant increasing the energy curves seven times just in the last 12 months."

Sandu said she has called on Japan's government for financial support. She also said she will explore possibilities to cooperate with Japanese investors to find alternative and renewable energies.

The EU granted Moldova and Ukraine candidate status for membership in June. The president said she hopes to join the union as soon as possible to protect her country's democracy and freedom.

She said, "We believe that once we become part of the EU, we're going to feel much safer in the family of the EU states and of course will have greater opportunities to develop economically but also feel safer in a small and vulnerable country."

Sandu also stressed that Ukraine is fighting to defend not only its own freedom, but also Moldova's, and her country will continue to support its neighbor.

European Council President Charles Michel and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to resume dialogue on human rights.

The two met in person for about three hours in Beijing on Thursday.

The leaders discussed protests that have recently erupted across China over its "zero-COVID" policy, which includes rigid restrictions on people's movement.

At a news conference after the meeting, Michel affirmed peaceful assembly as a fundamental right. China has not disclosed how Xi referred to the issue during the talks.

A spokesperson for Michel said the leader called on China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to help end Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

China's foreign ministry said President Xi responded that his country "will remain on the side of peace and continue to play a constructive role in its own way."

Both leaders also reportedly took up Russia's suggestion of potentially using nuclear weapons and agreed that nuclear threats are "irresponsible and highly dangerous."

A trial in Hong Kong of the founder of the Apple Daily newspaper has been postponed after the territory's government asked for Beijing's view on whether the defendant should be allowed to hire an overseas lawyer.

The issue revolves around the participation of the UK-based lawyer in the High Court trial of Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper.

Lai is charged with violating China's national security law for Hong Kong by colluding with foreign forces.

Hong Kong's High Court and Court of Final Appeal approved Lai's choice of the lawyer. But the government's judicial authorities oppose the selection.

On Monday, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee asked the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress for a legal interpretation concerning the matter.

In response to the government's action, the High Court has postponed the trial, which was scheduled to start on Thursday.

Concerns are growing that overturning of the Hong Kong courts' decisions by the mainland committee could further erode the territory's judiciary independence that is supposedly protected under the "one country, two systems" framework.

Japanese officials plan to put China top of the list of what their country sees as regional security challenges when they revise the National Security Strategy by the end of the year.

The document outlines Japan's basic diplomatic and defense policies. It refers to countries that pose security challenges.

North Korea is named first in the current strategy, released nine years ago. Its nuclear and missile development is described as a grave threat.

It then refers to China's rapidly advancing military capabilities as an issue of concern to the international community.

In the upcoming revised version, government officials plan to refer to China first and then North Korea. A reference to Russia will likely be added in light of its invasion of Ukraine.

The change reflects mounting concern over China's rapid military buildup, its military pressure on Taiwan and its increasing military presence in the East and South China seas.

The US National Security Strategy released in October refers to China as America's "pacing challenge."

Japanese officials also plan to call China's behavior a "challenge" to regional security.

The Myanmar military has reached an agreement with an armed ethnic group on a ceasefire in the western state of Rakhine. The decision was reached based on humanitarian concerns.

The military and the armed Buddhist group, the Arakan Army, announced the ceasefire on Saturday.

Various ethnic groups have been fighting for more autonomy since Myanmar gained independence about seven decades ago.

Fighting between the military and the Arakan Army had intensified in the last few years, causing more than 10,000 people to flee their homes.

Following last year's coup, the Arakan Army reportedly provided training and assistance to pro-democracy forces.

The latest ceasefire was mediated by Sasakawa Yohei, chairman of the non-profit Nippon Foundation, Japan's special envoy for peace in Myanmar for nearly a decade.

Sasakawa told NHK that the humanitarian ceasefire would lift blockades of roads and waterways, directly benefiting local residents.

The agreement has no set period, and it is uncertain how effective it will be.

Chinese people living in Japan have staged a rally to protest Beijing's strict anti-coronavirus measures.

Hundreds of protesters gathered near Shinjuku Station in central Tokyo on Wednesday evening.

They demanded that Chinese President Xi Jinping step down immediately.

Chanting in both Chinese and Japanese, they also demanded an end to the rule of the Chinese Communist Party.

Some held up blank sheets of paper in a show of protest against China's "zero-COVID" policy. Others displayed slogans calling for freedom and denouncing lockdowns.

Some of the protesters covered their faces with caps and masks to avoid being identified. The rally lasted for about two hours.

An evacuation drill simulating a ballistic missile launch has been held on Yonaguni Island, Japan's westernmost remote island, for the first time.

Twenty-two residents, including children, took part in the drill jointly organized by the central and prefectural governments and Yonaguni Town in Okinawa Prefecture, on Wednesday.

The exercise was held on the assumption that a foreign country had fired a ballistic missile that could reach the area.

Yonaguni Island is about 110 kilometers from Taiwan. In August, six ballistic missiles landed in its nearby waters when China staged massive military drills near Taiwan.

After a disaster radio system sounded a siren and called on residents to evacuate, participants ran into a community center to take shelter. They crouched down in places with no windows to protect themselves from a blast.

At the town hall, officials dived under desks, and in-house broadcast called on visitors to secure their safety. The officials also responded to telephone calls from residents.

A woman in her 40s, who took part in the drill, said it was good to join the exercise as she would not know what action she should take in case of a missile launch.

Another participant said an incoming missile is like a violent typhoon hitting in 10 minutes, so it is impossible to deal with it.

Town Mayor Itokazu Kenichi said that it is a race against time and it may be necessary to build shelters where people can quickly evacuate, such as in home gardens.

The Tokyo District Court is set to hand down a ruling in a damages lawsuit claiming that the government's non-recognition of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

The eight plaintiffs argued that the inability of same-sex couples to marry disregards the principles of freedom and equality guaranteed by the Constitution. The Japanese civil code does not allow such marriages. The plaintiffs include same-sex couples living in Tokyo.

Similar lawsuits have been filed against the state in Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka as well.

The national government says the Constitution's provision on marriage does not encompass same-sex marriage.

The district courts' rulings on the issue so far have been divided.

In March last year, the Sapporo District Court delivered the first ruling, judging that the non-recognition of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The presiding judge said same-sex couples cannot receive even part of the legal benefits that married couples are entitled to, and that the practices lack reasonable grounds and are discriminatory. The court, however, rejected the claim for compensation from the state.

In June, the Osaka District Court rejected the plaintiffs' claim against unconstitutionality. It said the gap in legal benefits between same-sex and heterosexual couples have been narrowing under the existing legal framework.

Wednesday's ruling in Tokyo will be the third in the series of similar lawsuits. The court is expected to deliver the ruling at 2 p.m.

China has announced that three astronauts have successfully docked with the country's orbiting space station to finish the facility's assembly.

State-run China Central Television said the Shenzhou-15 spacecraft and its three passengers lifted off atop a Long March-2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China on Tuesday at 11:08 p.m.

The spacecraft reportedly docked with the Tiangong space station at 5:42 a.m. on Wednesday.

The astronauts were greeted by the three-member crew that has been on the space station since early June. The six astronauts will work together on the mission of completing the station by year's end before the earlier crew returns to Earth.

The latest launch is the last in the assembly phase of China's multi-module space station. Tianhe, the core module, was launched in April, last year, followed by three manned missions and two module launches.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is serving an unprecedented third term as the ruling communist party's top leader, has outlined a vision to make China a "great modern socialist country" that will surpass the United States.

His administration has accelerated space development by sending unmanned probes to the moon and Mars.

UNESCO has decided to add a group of traditional Japanese dances performed across the country to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The United Nations cultural agency is holding a conference in Morocco's capital, Rabat.

Participants on Wednesday discussed Japan's nomination for the listing and unanimously decided to register the dances as intangible cultural heritage.

"Furyu-odori" are ritual folk dances accompanied by lively music. Japan's Cultural Affairs Agency says the dances have been passed down in communities for generations.

The agency says that the dances are an important part of Japan's culture. But they also have a social role.

It says the dances can offer a spiritual comfort to people affected by natural disasters.

Forty-one traditional events in 24 of Japan's prefectures will join UNESCO's list. People across the country are celebrating the decision.
