Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is insisting that he and his wife had nothing to do with the sale of state-owned land to private school operator Moritomo Gakuen.

The Finance Ministry admitted on Monday that official documents relevant to the steeply discounted sale had been altered.

Abe said in an Upper House budget committee meeting on Wednesday that the documents before they were altered clearly show that neither he nor his wife, Akie, were involved in the matter.

Abe said he wants to make it clear that he, his wife, and members of his office had absolutely nothing to do with the approval to sell the state-owned land or to open a school there.

Abe also denied allegations that Akie had encouraged Moritomo Gakuen to open the school.

The original documents said Akie told the school operator to proceed with the plan, noting that it was a good site.

Abe said he had asked his wife about it, and that she had denied making such a remark.

Finance Minister Taro Aso apologized during the same budget meeting. He said the alterations to the documents are extremely serious and regrettable.

Aso said his ministry will fully cooperate with investigations and take necessary measures to prevent a recurrence and to restore public trust. He said his ministry will do all it can to hold itself accountable to the Diet.

Japan's top government spokesperson says coordinating policy with South Korea and the United States is important to realizing an inter-Korea and US-North Korea summit.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga spoke with news media on Wednesday. He said the government hopes three-way cooperation will result in a comprehensive solution to the North's nuclear and missile issues and its abduction of Japanese nationals.

Asked about the possibility of a Japan-North Korea summit, Suga said the government will be looking for the most effective way to set policies.

He said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had asked US President Donald Trump in a recent telephone phone conversation to cooperate on the abductions issue.

He said Trump spoke with the abductees' relatives during his visit to Japan last year and that he understands the situation.

The process of handing over responsibility to a new US secretary of state could affect pressing diplomatic issues. The handover is expected to start next month.

Concerns have been raised that the US will be lacking full leadership in diplomacy until May.

President Donald Trump dismissed his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday, nominating Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo to replace him.

Tillerson spoke with news media gathered at the State Department. He said he would be delegating all the responsibilities of his office to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan. He added that his term as Secretary of State terminates on March 31st.

Tillerson said he would work for a smooth transition without confusion over diplomatic issues, including the handling of North Korea.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker issued a statement on Tuesday saying a hearing for nominee Pompeo could be expected in April.

The Senate must approve Pompeo before he can assume the post.

Former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak is at the prosecutors' office in Seoul to face questioning over allegations of bribery and other criminal offences. Lee denies all the allegations.

Before entering the building on Wednesday morning, he expressed his apologies to people in the country for causing concerns.

Among the allegations, Lee is suspected of having Samsung Electronics shoulder lawsuit fees of about 6 billion won, or more than 5 million dollars, for an auto parts company he effectively controlled. In exchange, Lee allegedly pardoned the company's chairman, who received a suspended prison sentence for tax evasion.

The questioning is likely to take some time as Lee is denying the allegations. Prosecutors are expected to let Lee return home after being questioned, and then they will discuss whether or not to seek an arrest warrant.

Lee is the 5th former South Korean president to be subject to questioning by prosecutors.

The United Nations says armed conflict in Syria last year killed more than 900 children, the highest number since the war began.

This Thursday marks 7 years since the pro-democracy movement turned into civil war in Syria.

Already this year, more than 1,000 children have been injured or killed.

UN officials said in Geneva on Tuesday that at least 910 children died last year, nearly 40 percent more than the previous year.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Panos Moumtzis, called 2017 the deadliest year in the Syrian war for children.

One of Japan's busiest airports is getting another runway and longer operating hours amid growing competition.
Officials hope the move will boost Narita International Airport's standing as a key global gateway.

Narita's operator reached an agreement with central and local government officials on the plan on Tuesday. It aims to increase landings from the current 300,000 to about 500,000 a year.

The plan calls for adding a third runway in about 10 years, and for departure and landing hours to be gradually extended.

Flights will eventually start taking off at 5 AM, while the last could leave as late as half past midnight. This would extend the flight schedule by 2-and-a-half hours.

Narita is facing tougher competition from other stops in Asia, including Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

Officials hope the changes will give Narita a leg up, but not everyone is on board. Some local residents are worried about the increased noise.
