Leaders of the Group of 20 economies have wrapped up their 2-day summit in Argentina by adopting a final statement.

Japanese Prime Minister Sinzo Abe gave a speech as the chair of the next G20 summit. He called for support to ensure the success of the meeting scheduled for June in Osaka.

Abe said G20 countries are leading the world economy, and are therefore responsible for discussing global challenges and finding solutions.

He said they bear a grave responsibility at a time when there are concerns about the outlook of the global economy and its sustainability.

Abe said he wants next year's summit to promote free trade and innovation. He said his hope is for the event to contribute to global economic growth and the creation of a free, open, and sustainable world.

The United States will not go ahead with a plan to raise tariffs on Chinese imports. The Trump administration had warned that on January 1st it would raise duties on 200 billion dollars' worth of goods from 10 percent to 25 percent.

The announcement follows a meeting by US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, after the G20 conference. Trump released a statement calling the meeting "amazing and productive".

The White House says Beijing will reduce its trade deficit with Washington by purchasing more farm products and energy.

It says the 2 countries will immediately begin negotiations on intellectual property protection and cybercrime.
But the White House says if the 2 countries can't reach an agreement within 90 days, it will then increase tariffs.

China's vice commerce minister says the 2 countries will not raise tariffs on new items. He says that discussions will cover lifting duties that have already been increased to 25 percent.

US President Donald Trump says he plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in either January or February. It would be their second summit.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from Argentina, where he attended the G20 summit, that 3 locations are being considered.

He also indicated he intends to invite Kim to the United States at some point.

Differences over how to denuclearize the North have kept the 2 countries from deciding the date and venue of the next summit. They had planned to hold it before the end of this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he briefly spoke with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina.

In a news conference after the closing of the summit on Saturday, Putin said it is too bad Trump cancelled their formal meeting.

He said he answered Trump's questions about the Russian coast guard's seizing of 3 Ukrainian naval ships off the coast of Russian-controlled Crimea. He said Russian ships stayed in their own positions.

While avoiding direct criticism of Trump's cancellation of their bilateral summit, Putin said he hopes the United States will be prepared to eventually hold one.

How to fix current account imbalances will be one of the topics at the Finance Ministers' and Central Bank Governors' meeting next June.

Japan will host the meeting in the southwestern city of Fukuoka on June 8th and 9th.

Finance Minister Taro Aso announced the major topics for discussion on Saturday in Argentina as the G20 summit closed.

Aso told a news conference that he hopes the finance ministers will discuss the issue of current account imbalances.

He said that Japan wants the discussion to focus on redressing such imbalances through multilateral measures, not bilateral trade negotiations.

Japan also wants to discuss rules on country-to-country loans to improve transparency. An increasing number of emerging countries are burdened with loans from China that they cannot pay back.

The ministers are also expected to discuss the impact of aging populations on the global economy and taxation of global IT giants.

Aso said that he hopes the finance ministers and the governors of central banks will discuss laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth, as they are responsible for the future of the world economy.

Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono says his country will consider using the World Trade Organization's dispute settlement procedures to address Taiwan's continued ban on Japanese food imports following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident.

In a referendum held on November 24th, an overwhelming majority of Taiwanese voters voted in favor of continuing the import ban on food from Fukushima and 4 surrounding prefectures.

Kono told a gathering in Morioka City, northern Japan on Sunday that the import restrictions are not based on scientific evidence, but are being used for political purposes.

He said it is highly regrettable that Japanese products cannot be exported because of that.

Kono said it is against the WTO rules to let a referendum decide these kind of matters, and that, if needed, Japan will utilize the mechanism in place to file a complaint with the WTO.

The president of the International Olympic Committee says he will hold talks with the National Olympic Committees and the governments of North and South Korea early next year.

Thomas Bach disclosed this in Tokyo at the general assembly of the 206-member Association of National Olympic Committees. The 2-day meeting ended on Thursday.

Bach indicated that he will accelerate talks with the 2 Koreas on the formation of joint teams for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Bach referred to the first-ever joint women's ice hockey team formed by the 2 Koreas for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February.

Bach quoted South Korean President Moon Jae-in as saying that the IOC had opened the door to peace talks on the Korean Peninsula. He also quoted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as saying that the Olympic Games shifted the momentum of inter-Korean relations and this can be attributed to the IOC's efforts.

Officials from the National Olympic Committees of the 2 Koreas also attended the meeting in Tokyo.

A South Korean official told NHK that they held talks with North Korea's sports minister Kim Il Guk multiple times on the sidelines of the meeting and proposed fielding more unified teams for the Tokyo Games.

The minister is also the chairman of North Korea's National Olympic Committee.
