Japan Airlines has been excluded from a list of the world's 20 safest airlines. The carrier had been on the list for 3 years in a row from 2016.

All Nippon Airways was selected as one of the 20 safest airlines by Australian media company AirlineRatings.

The firm compiles its annual evaluation of 405 carriers by investigating accident reports, government audits and financial performance.

An AirlineRatings official says Japan Airlines was excluded from the list because of a series of alcohol-related problems involving flight crew.

Japan's transport ministry has urged Japan Airlines to overhaul its policies. The recommendation came after a female flight attendant was found to have drunk some champagne on a JAL plane flying from Japan to Honolulu last month.

A London court sentenced a JAL copilot to 10 months in prison in November last year after a pre-flight breath test found his alcohol level was more than 10 times Britain's legal limit.

The New York Times says the FBI opened an investigation into US President Donald Trump in 2017 on suspicion that he acted on behalf of Russia against American interests.

The paper quotes multiple investigators as saying the probe was launched after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Special Counsel Robert Mueller took over the inquiry when he was appointed, but the New York Times says it is unclear if he is "still pursuing the counterintelligence matter."

Trump tweeted on Saturday that he had just learned that the FBI opened up an investigation for no reason and with no proof.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders says the allegation is "absurd."

A winter phenomenon known as "diamond dust" has been observed in the town of Biei in the northern Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido.

The natural phenomenon is seen when frigid temperatures cause water vapor in the air to freeze and sparkle in the sunlight.

On Sunday, many people with cameras gathered in mountainous areas of the town, where the mercury fell to minus 25.8 degrees Celsius in the morning.

They took photos of the tiny ice crystals in the air shining in the morning sunlight.

Visitors also enjoyed other winter scenes, such as frost-covered trees and a frozen river.

A woman in her 40s visiting from the city of Asahikawa in the prefecture said it's so cold, she felt her hands stinging even though she was wearing multiple layers of clothing.
