NHK has learned that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has decided to have the name of the country's new era announced on April 1st, after it is approved by the Cabinet earlier in the day.

Abe intends to outline his plan at a news conference on Friday.

The name of the new era will come into use in the country on May 1st, when Crown Prince Naruhito ascends the throne. Emperor Akihito will abdicate one day before that.

The government has been making arrangements based on the assumption that the name of the new era will be published at least one month before the enthronement.

The government hopes the timeframe will prevent the change from having a negative effect on people's lives.

A name is chosen to mark a new era every time an Emperor ascends the throne.

The name of the current era is Heisei.

People in Japan have rung in the New Year with celebrations across the country. In Japan, 2019 is a special year, as Crown Prince Naruhito will ascend the throne in May. That will mark the start of a new era and the end of the current one, which is called "Heisei."

Many crowded into the world-famous Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo to participate in the countdown to the New Year.

Streets around the crossing were closed to traffic, as thousands of revelers gathered.

The crossing is popular among young people and tourists.

Hundreds of police officers patrolled the area and controlled the flow of merrymakers.

Meanwhile, worshippers flocked to a shrine in central Tokyo to pray for good luck in 2019.

People waited in line at Meiji Jingu shrine before the clock struck midnight.

When a drum was pounded to signal the arrival of the New Year, people threw money into a fenced-in area and offered prayers.

In Japan, people traditionally visit Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines during the first days of the New Year.

More than 3 million people are expected to pay their respects at Meiji Jingu during the first 3 days of 2019.

Visitors from in and out of the United States have joined New Yorkers to ring in the new year at the annual countdown celebration in Times Square.

Organizers say that about one million revelers braved the rain. The packed crowd counted down together as they watched the clock on a big television screen.

As the clock struck midnight, people hugged each other, shouting "Happy New Year" under confetti.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says he is eager to hold a second round of summit talks with the United States, but threatens to seek a "new path" if Washington maintains sanctions against the country.

Kim's 30-minute New Year address was broadcast on Tuesday on state-run Korean Central Television.

Kim said he is ready to meet US President Donald Trump again at any time.

He also pledged that Pyongyang will no longer build, test, use or spread nuclear weapons.

But Kim said North Korea will have no choice but to seek a "new path" if the US misjudges the patience of its people and sticks to sanctions and pressure.

Washington says it will continue enforcing sanctions until the North achieves denuclearization.

In his speech, Kim also said his country will work closely with parties to the Korean War armistice agreement to promote multilateral talks on turning the pact into a peace treaty.

Kim called on the US and South Korea to halt their joint military drills. He said they are the source of tension on the Korean Peninsula.

The US maintains it intends to stage drills with South Korea in spring this year, although on a smaller scale than usual.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has delivered a New Year's speech, reiterating the government's stance of protecting national sovereignty and security. China is at odds with the United States over trade, security and other issues.

Xi gave the address on state-run China Central Television and other media on Monday.

Reflecting on 2018, Xi emphasized government efforts to tackle environmental problems.

He also stressed the work the government has done to improve the quality of people's lives, saying that 10 million had been lifted out of poverty during the year.

Xi remarked that the People's Republic of China will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2019.

He noted that the country has to rely on the people to maintain self-reliance.

"Self-reliance" was a word favored by Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People's Republic of China.

The remark indicates that Xi will not overly depend on foreign nations to boost China's national power.

Xi said China is faced with huge changes not seen in a century. He added that no matter how the international situation changes, China's confidence and determination to safeguard national sovereignty and security will not change.

The US government will remain partially shut down into the New Year, as Congress wrapped up the last day of 2018 without holding substantial talks on spending bills.

Republicans and Democrats are divided over a demand by President Donald Trump to provide funds for building a wall along the Mexican border. The disagreement has led to the partial government shutdown.

US media say the Democrats aim to enact a new spending bill after the party takes control of the House of Representatives from Thursday. The bill covers funds for border security, but not the wall's construction cost.

Trump took to Twitter on Monday, the 10th day of the partial shutdown, after cancelling his vacation plans in Florida.

He said, "I'm in the Oval Office. Democrats, come back from vacation now and give us the votes necessary for Border Security, including the Wall."

The New York Stock Exchange has ended its final trading day of 2018. One of its key indexes posted an annual loss.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,327 on Monday, New Year's Eve. That's up 265 points from Friday's finish.

Earlier in 2018, the Dow plummeted in April. But it later climbed, propped up by strong corporate performance. The index touched a record closing high of 26,828 on October 3rd.

However, the Dow turned downward again. The decline chiefly stemmed from drops in share prices of leading IT firms, concerns about economic prospects, and the trade friction between the US and China.

The Dow shed 5.6 percent in 2018.This is its first annual loss in three years.

Key stock indexes on major bourses outside the US also marked negative growth in 2018.

Japan's Nikkei Average plunged 12 percent. Britain's FTSE 100 tumbled 12.5 percent. Germany's DAX 30 dived 18.3 percent. The Shanghai composite index slumped 24.5 percent.

Russian security authorities have detained a US citizen in Moscow on suspicion of spying.

Russia's Federal Security Service said on Monday that Paul Whelan had been arrested on espionage charges. The organization gave no details of the alleged spying.

Russia has criticized US judicial authorities for arresting last July a Russian woman residing in Washington for spying. She allegedly infiltrated political groups in the United States and operated at the direction of the Russian government.

Relations between the United States and Russia have soured since Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and the country's firing at and seizure of Ukrainian naval ships last November have further worsened tensions.

A Turkish TV station has broadcast footage showing men carrying what is purportedly the remains of journalist Jamal Khashoggi to the Saudi consul-general's residence in Istanbul.

The video aired on Sunday shows men carrying dark suitcases and bags on separate occasions through the main entrance of the residence.

Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.

Saudi Arabia has acknowledged its involvement in the killing, but Khasshoggi's remains have never been located.

Some have accused Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of being involved.

Saudi Arabia has denied the crown prince's involvement, and is trying to put to an end to the case.

Turkey says the truth must be revealed about who gave the order to kill the Saudi journalist.

The broadcast of the footage is likely to draw sharp reactions from the Saudi government.

Tokyo police have arrested a 21-year-old man for driving into pedestrians on a crowded street on New Year's Day, injuring eight people.

The incident occurred at 10 minutes past midnight on Takeshita Street in Shibuya Ward, a popular shopping street for young people. The man plowed into the pedestrians as he drove in the wrong direction along the street. The victims are aged between their teens and their 50s. One male university student is in a critical condition.

The driver was identified as Kazuhiro Kusakabe. He fled the scene but police later arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder of the student.

Investigators say the man initially told them he had conducted a terrorist act. They say he later admitted to the attempted murder charge. He then claimed his action was an attack on the system of capital punishment.

The street was closed to vehicular traffic at the time. It was bustling with people headed to a major shrine to pray for good luck in 2019.

People wearing demonic masks and straw garments visited homes in Japan's northern prefecture of Akita on New Year's Eve to ward off evil spirits and invite good luck in 2019.

The Namahage folk ritual is one of the 10 traditional Japanese events added to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2018.

Eleven volunteers dressed up as Namahage deities to make the rounds of houses in a district in Oga City on Monday. The area revived the time-honored rite after a hiatus of over 20 years.

In each home, the Namahage growled and asked if there were any children who ignore their parents.

Desperate-looking children held on to their parents and nodded to show that they promise to obey their parents.

Many communities in the city dropped the practice in recent decades, partly due to a shortage of volunteers to play the deities.
