Russian police have detained hundreds of people who gathered to attend a rally organized by opposition forces in Moscow. A pro-opposition civic group says more than 800 people were arrested.

The people were protesting on Saturday against the exclusion of 57 opposition candidates from the ballot for the Moscow city council election scheduled for September.

Police said the protest were unauthorized and ordered the crowd to disband. They detained participants who didn't comply.

Police say about 1,500 people were at the rally and say they detained about 600 of them.

Russian investigators on Saturday alleged that a civic group led by opposition leader Alexei Navalny was involved in money laundering. He is a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin and is currently in police custody.

On July 27, police detained more than one thousand people who attended a protest by opposition forces.

France and Canada have expressed concern over the human rights situation in Russia.

Pakistan has accused India of violating an international treaty by using cluster bombs in its latest cross-border attacks in the Kashmir region that both countries claim.

Pakistan's military alleged that Indian troops used the illegal munitions during artillery bombardments of Pakistani-controlled areas of the divided region on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Pakistanis said that they had confirmed the deaths of two civilians, including a child, and injuries to more than ten others caused by the shelling.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Pakistani military said that it had identified bombs used in the attacks as cluster munitions after it examined the bombs and fragments collected from the site.

An international treaty bans the use of cluster bombs that release explosive bomblets. Unexploded cluster bombs left on battlefields pose a danger to civilians long after conflicts end. But neither of the countries have joined the convention.

Tension mounted in Kashmir in February when the Indian military launched cross-border airstrikes while Pakistani forces shot down an Indian fighter plane.

The latest confrontation between the two rivals could raise military tension again.

The ASEAN Regional Forum has urged the United States and North Korea to resume working-level talks on Pyongyang's denuclearization.

The ARF held a ministerial meeting in Thailand on Friday. Representatives from the 10 ASEAN members, Japan, the US, China, and North Korea attended the gathering.

Attention was focused on whether denuclearization talks between the US and North Korea would resume on the sidelines of the meeting.

But Pyongyang failed to send Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, who had played a key role in the denuclearization talks.

In a chairman's statement released on Saturday, the ARF said the ministers urged all parties concerned to continue or resume peaceful dialogue and work together toward progress in the realization of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

Another agenda item was the South China Sea, where Beijing is building up its military presence.

The US says China test-fired anti-ship ballistic missiles from its mainland into the sea in June.

The joint communique of ASEAN foreign ministers issued on Wednesday said some members expressed concern about "serious incidents," apparently having China in mind.

But the chairman's statement of ARF, where China also participated, just said the ministers took note of some concern about land reclamation and other activities in the sea.
