Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, along with Japan, China and other countries, will begin a series of meetings in Thailand on Saturday on the outskirts of the capital, Bangkok.

On the first day, the leaders of the 10 ASEAN countries are scheduled to hold a summit meeting.

Over three days, ASEAN is scheduled to hold a number of summit talks separately with representatives of countries outside the regional grouping.

The East Asia Summit will be held on Monday, attended by 18 countries, including Japan and China. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will attend.

Washington is sending newly-appointed National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien as the head of the US delegation.

At past ASEAN summits, the US was represented by the president, vice president or secretary of state.

There is speculation that the downgrade may raise questions about America's commitment to Asian affairs.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has expressed dissatisfaction with North Korea, saying progress on denuclearization has been "far too slow."

In an interview with a US radio station on Friday, Pompeo said he believes the two projectiles launched by North Korea on Thursday were the same type as previous ones. The Trump administration has indicated it has no problems with short-range missile launches.

The North launched the projectiles toward the Sea of Japan. Pyongyang later announced a successful test of what it called "super-large multiple rocket launchers."

Pompeo noted President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed last year on efforts to get the North to denuclearize.

He said the US was working toward this, but that there has been no progress.

The White House is seeking to resume dialogue after working-level talks in Sweden last month ended without an agreement. But a restart of talks is nowhere in sight, as the North has been pushing for sanctions relief while continuing provocations by test-firing missiles.

Pompeo said he hopes the two countries can continue to work together for what he hoped will be "a good outcome" in the months ahead.

The UN disarmament committee on Friday adopted a Japan-submitted draft resolution on nuclear disarmament. The draft calls for an action plan to help rid the world of nuclear weapons.

The resolution lists six measures Japan says the international community must take immediately.

They call for increased transparency of policies of nuclear-armed powers to build mutual trust between countries. The resolution urges the promotion of educational programs such as interaction with atomic bomb survivors. It also proposes a framework to facilitate dialogue between nuclear-armed nations and others.

Members of the committee approved the resolution by a majority, with 148 of 178 countries voting in favor. Four countries objected and 26 abstained.

The United States abstained, saying the plan does not reflect the world's changing security environment.

Brazil also abstained on the grounds that the resolution should call for stronger commitments from nuclear-armed nations to disarm. Brazil supports the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which Japan has not joined.

The reactions reflect the difficulties Japan faces in serving as a bridge between different sides.

Japan's disarmament ambassador Nobushige Takamizawa said the other nations understood Japan's stance of pursuing common ground between nuclear and non-nuclear armed nations, but that even more effort is needed.

US President Donald Trump has suggested he may meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in the midwestern state of Iowa to sign a trade agreement.

Trump had planned to hold talks with Xi in Chile later this month on the sidelines of the APEC summit meeting.

But after Chile canceled hosting the APEC meeting, Trump indicated he may arrange a US-China summit to sign an initial trade deal with Xi.

Trump said on Friday that a couple of US locations were being considered and, "It could even be in Iowa."

He said Iowa makes sense because the deal would represent the "largest order in history for farmers."
It's also believed Trump favors announcing the deal in the agricultural midwest since the world's two largest economies reached an agreement last month that China will import more farm products from the US.

The two countries held high-level telephone talks on the deal on Friday.

The office of the US Trade Representative said in a statement that negotiators have made progress in a variety of areas and are working to resolve outstanding issues. The two sides are expected to continue talks on intellectual property and other matters.

Share prices in New York rose on Friday, as investors took comfort from data that showed US jobs growth slowed less than expected in October.

Wall Street's S&P 500 index reached 3,066, a gain of 29 points, or 1 percent, beating a record high set on Wednesday.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite gained 1.1 percent to 8,386, a record high for the first time since July.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended at 27,347. That's up 301 points, or 1.1 percent, from the previous day's close.

The Dow is less than 12 points from a closing record.

The US Labor Department data released on Friday showed nonfarm payrolls rose by 128,000 jobs in October.

The number of workers in the automobile sector has decreased by more than 40,000.

This is due to the shutdown caused by a 40-day strike at a General Motors plant having an impact on employment, including that of the automaker's business partners.

However, the result was higher than market expectations of lower figures. Some observers say the impact of the GM strike is limited.

President Donald Trump took to twitter on Friday writing: "Stock Market up BIG! Record highs for S&P 500 and NASDAQ. Enjoy!".

In the three years since Trump's victory in the presidential election, the Dow has risen by about 9,000 dollars.

British police say they now believe all 39 people found dead in a container truck near London last week were Vietnamese nationals.

Police officials said on Friday they have traced the relatives of some of the victims. They said they are in contact with the Vietnamese government and working together to further identify the victims.

The bodies were found on October 23. Police initially said the victims were thought to be Chinese.

Two people have been arrested including a driver from Northern Ireland who police have charged with multiple counts of manslaughter and conspiracy to traffic people. Police believe more people are involved in the case and are continuing investigations.

Vietnamese police said on Friday they had arrested two people suspected of organizing a people-smuggling operation. They did not reveal the suspects' nationalities, names, or gender.

NHK has learned that security guards at Shuri Castle in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan, first detected smoke in the northern side of the main hall in Thursday's fire.

The security guards reportedly told police that they found smoke had filled a stairway leading to the northern part of the main building.

They are also quoted as telling police that the smoke filled the area, making it difficult to breathe.

Police say security personnel entered the main hall from their office at the gate just across from the building after being alerted by the security system.

Police suspect the fire started in the northern section as the smoke reached a corridor leading to that area soon after a sensor sounded an alert. They are now trying to determine the cause of the fire.
