A regional coast guard in Japan says its South Korean counterpart has asked to cancel a joint drill for maritime accidents.

The 8th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture, revealed on Friday that the joint exercise scheduled for next Wednesday will not take place. The coast guard said it received the request on Wednesday .

Coast guards from the two countries had planned to use patrol and rescue vessels for the training drill about 180 kilometers off the Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan.

The regional headquarters said it is not in a position to comment on whether the Korea Coast Guard's decision is linked to the recent deterioration in bilateral ties.
It said the cancellation is regrettable, but added that it will try to find ways to boost cooperation with its South Korean counterpart.

Some 10,000 police officers are on standby as Japan gets ready for Pope Francis's visit from Saturday.

The Pope is the first head of the Roman Catholic Church to visit the country in 38 years.

On Sunday, the pontiff will visit the atomic-bombed cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. He will meet with Emperor Naruhito in Tokyo the following day, and hold a Mass at Tokyo Dome.

The police in Tokyo and the prefectures of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are to mobilize their officers during the visit.

In Tokyo on Friday, officers were seen checking trash cans and ditches at a highway rest stop.

Heavy security will be in place around the Vatican embassy in central Tokyo, where the Pope will stay.

Officers will also be deployed to other places where he will visit. They plan to inspect vehicles passing by.

The police are sending special squads to deal with suspicious drones. Armed counter terror units and water-scooter units will also be patrolling.

Japan's leading gauge of inflation rose for the 34th straight month in October. But the growth rate was relatively slow, despite a recent hike in the consumption tax.

The core consumer price index, which excludes fresh food, rose 0.4 percent from the same month last year.

Officials say the increase in the consumption tax from 8 percent to 10 percent on October 1 pushed up prices of restaurant meals and public transport.

But fees for private kindergartens and daycare fell sharply as free preschool and daycare programs were introduced at the start of October.

Officials say this was one reason the core CPI growth rate picked up by only 0.1 percentage point from September.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have visited Ise Shrine in central Japan for a traditional ritual to report the completion of the Emperor's enthronement ceremonies.

The Imperial couple left their lodge in the compound of the Inner Shrine on Friday morning in separate vehicles, bound for the Outer Shrine, which is dedicated to the goddess of harvests and industry.

The Imperial couple waved and smiled at crowds of well-wishers that greeted them along the route.

At the Outer Shrine, the Emperor, clad in a traditional robe, rode in a horse-drawn carriage to the shrine's main sanctuary amid light rain.

The Emperor was escorted by chamberlains carrying two of the three types of Imperial Regalia to the main sacred palace. He offered a sprig from a sacred tree and bowed to the shrine.

The Empress arrived by car as she is allergic to horses. Dressed in a ceremonial kimono with traditional hairstyle, the Empress bowed at the main sacred palace.

The Imperial couple is scheduled to visit the Inner Shrine on Saturday. The shrine is dedicated to the Sun Goddess, the ancestor of the Imperial family according to legend.

Construction has begun on one of six stations for ultra-high-speed maglev trains in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo.

Officials from the Central Japan Railway Company, which will operate the magnetically levitated trains, and representatives of local municipalities attended a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday.

The operator plans to begin the maglev service between Tokyo's Shinagawa and Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, in 2027.

The new station in Kanagawa will be built 30 meters underground, with two platforms and four tracks. It is expected to be completed by March of 2027.

Central Japan Railway President Shin Kaneko said the new station will be an underground terminal, so construction will take a long time. He also said he will try to begin the service soon in response to high expectations that the trains will boost Japan's economy.

Construction of new underground platforms for maglev trains is already underway at the Shinagawa and Nagoya stations.

Officials of a town north of Tokyo have introduced public vehicles that can travel long distances using gasoline, electricity and liquefied petroleum gas.

The officials of Sakai Town in Ibaraki Prefecture say the cars can go up to 1,300 kilometers when full of all three types of fuel.

They expect the cars to play an active role during disasters when refueling is difficult.

The vehicles can also be used as electric power sources for medical equipment. One can operate a typical artificial respirator for about a week.

The officials say the town is the first municipality in Japan to introduce such cars as public vehicles.

Mayor Masahiro Hashimoto says he wants the cars used during disasters not only in his town but also by neighboring local governments.

He also says he wants to work with surrounding municipalities to promote introducing such vehicles.
