North Korea says it will cut off all lines of communication with South Korea from Tuesday noon.

This is after Pyongyang was angered by leaflets criticizing its leader Kim Jong Un that defectors in South Korea flew across the border on May 31.

North Korea's ruling party newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, said on Tuesday that the South Korean government has dodged responsibility by overlooking the hostile act. It said North Korea has concluded there is no longer any issue to discuss with South Korean authorities face to face.

The report said North Korea will terminate communication through an inter-Korean liaison office, military hotlines, and between North Korea's ruling Workers' Party and the South Korean presidential office.

It also said Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, and other officials instructed a section in charge of South Korea on Monday to completely change the policy toward Seoul into one against an enemy.

North Korea says the latest measures are only the first step. It is apparently trying to rattle the South Korean government, which is taking a conciliatory stance to thaw inter-Korean relations.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200609_02/

Britain has begun imposing a mandatory two-week quarantine on people arriving from abroad as part of measures to curb coronavirus infections.

The government says the new rules, which came into effect on Monday, are necessary to prevent imported cases, now that the peak of the country's outbreak is over. Britain has so far reported over 40,000 deaths from the virus.

Arrivals to the UK, including returning Britons, need to fill in an online form giving the address of where they will stay. They are required to self-isolate at the address for 14 days.

Those who fail to comply with the quarantine rules face a fine of up to 1,000 pounds, or over 1,200 dollars.

Visitors from Ireland and medical workers are among those exempted.

The new rules come at a time when other European countries are relaxing travel restrictions to lure tourists during the upcoming summer holiday season.

Critics say the 14-day quarantine will deal a further blow to the already struggling aviation and tourism industries.

Members of the ruling Conservative Party voiced concern about the measures.

The head of the World Health Organization warns the coronavirus pandemic is worsening globally with a record number of new cases for a single day reported worldwide.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters on Monday that the situation in Europe is improving, but globally it is worsening.

He said that more than 136,000 cases were reported on Sunday. That's the most in a single day.

Michael Ryan, the WHO's chief of emergencies, answered questions over a decision by the Brazilian government not to update the total number of cases and fatalities in the country. It has the second-most infections, behind only the United States.

Ryan said that Brazil's data had been extremely detailed until now, and the WHO hopes that will continue.

The World Bank forecasts that the global economy will shrink by 5.2 percent this year due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The bank announced its forecasts in its latest Global Economic Prospects report on Monday.

The figure was 7.7 percentage points down from its previous estimate in January, before the global pandemic took hold. The report says that would represent the largest decline since the World War Two.

This compares with a 3 percent contraction forecasted by the International Monetary Fund two months ago.

The report also projects contractions of 6.1 percent for the United States and Japan, and 9.1 for the euro zone.

The Chinese economy is expected to grow by one percent, its lowest rate in 44 years.

The report also says emerging markets and developing economies are expected to shrink 2.5 percent, their first contraction as a group in at least sixty years. It says the contraction will push millions of people into extreme poverty.

The brief adds there are still downside risks, including the possibility of a more protracted pandemic. It says that in its more pessimistic scenario, the global economy could shrink as much as 8 percent this year.

A former US police officer charged with murdering an African American man during an arrest last month has made his first court appearance in the state of Minnesota.

George Floyd died two weeks ago in Minneapolis after Caucasian officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck and used excessive force during the arrest.

The court set his bail at up to 1.25 million dollars during the first hearing of the case on Monday. The court also set Chauvin's next court hearing for June 29.

US media have reported that the defendant made few comments. There have been no reports of his release on bail.

Meanwhile, a memorial service for Floyd was held on Monday at a church in Texas where he had spent a lot of time. Mourners offered silent prayers for him.

His death has sparked nationwide protests against police brutality.

Demonstrators in front of the New York police headquarters demanded immediate action.

They are calling for police reform and severe punishment for the four former police officers involved in Floyd's death.
