Authorities in Thailand are increasing pressure on anti-government protesters who continue to call for reform of the monarchy.

Four key protest leaders, including university students, have been questioned for allegedly insulting the monarchy.

Police summoned the leaders on Tuesday regarding allegations that they violated the lese-majeste law at an assembly in September. The law forbids insulting or defaming the monarchy.

Before being interrogated, one of the leaders said such charges will only fuel public anger.

Police spoke with the leaders for about two hours before releasing them. Some were also questioned on separate lese-majeste allegations last week.

Violators of the law against insulting the royal family can face up to 15 years in prison. But the law has not been applied for several years. The demonstrators charge that the interrogations infringe on their freedom of expression and are an attempt to suppress the people through fear. They are calling for large-scale demonstrations on Thursday.

People in Afghanistan have paid tribute to Japanese doctor Nakamura Tetsu, who was killed a year ago while working on humanitarian projects in the war-ravaged country.

Nakamura had spent years providing humanitarian assistance to help rebuild Afghanistan. He was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on December 4, 2019, while traveling by car in the eastern province of Nangarhar. He was 73.

On Tuesday, more than a thousand people took part in a government-hosted memorial in Nangarhar.

In his address, Governor Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail honored Nakamura's work. The governor stressed that he is determined to do his utmost to catch the killers and bring them to justice.

The organizers also screened a film showing Nakamura working to build irrigation canals.

A 60-year-old attendee praised the doctor for his effort to improve the lives of Afghans. He said he will never forget Nakamura's achievements.

Local authorities have questioned a number of men about their suspected involvement in the murder. But they have yet to arrest any suspects.

South Korea's president says his country will consider joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade pact.

Moon Jae-in was speaking in Seoul on Tuesday at an annual Trade Day ceremony.

Moon said, "As the global economy recovers from coronavirus, countries will compete with each other to seize market share. We'll continue to consider joining the TPP."

South Korean media say this is the first time the president has spoken in a positive way about participating in the 11-country free trade deal.

South Korea is among the members that signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership last month. The deal includes 15 nations on the western side of the Pacific, including Japan and China.

Seoul is apparently taking another look at international free trade frameworks in an effort to reduce any side effects resulting from the trade conflict between the United States and China.
