Japanese Defense Ministry officials say North Korea has launched a projectile that is thought to have been a ballistic missile.

They say they believe it fell into waters outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan. No damage has been reported.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North fired the projectile, thought to have been a submarine-launched ballistic missile, or SLBM on Saturday afternoon. This would be the first time since October that North Korea has launched an SLBM.

Experts say North Korea wants to highlight its commitment to accelerating its nuclear and missile development programs ahead of the start of the administration of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Yoon is set to take office on Tuesday and hopes to strengthen his country's alliance with the United States. He is scheduled to meet US President Joe Biden on May 21.

North Korea has launched ballistic missiles every month since the beginning of the year.

Rescuers are struggling to evacuate civilians from a steel plant in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol as Russia's military continues its offensive on the country's east ahead of its Victory Day holiday.

Russia is believed to be pushing for complete control of the city in time for the anniversary commemorating the former Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany.

US Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said the airspace over Ukraine remains "contested," with the sides engaged in fierce fighting.

Hundreds of civilians are believed to be trapped in Mariupol's Azovstal steel plant, where Ukrainian forces are holding out against Russia's attempt to seize the city.

Russian forces had earlier announced a three-day ceasefire from Thursday to Saturday to allow for the evacuation of civilians.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said 50 people, including women and children, were evacuated on Friday and the evacuation will continue on Saturday.

But she criticized the Russian military for obstructing the process. She wrote in a social media post that Russian forces have constantly violated the ceasefire, making the evacuation very slow.

Fighters in the Azov battalion say a car rushing in to help the evacuation was targeted. They say one soldier was killed and six other people were wounded.

The United States announced an additional 150-million-dollar weapons package on Friday, including artillery munitions, radars, and other equipment. Germany has also said it will provide seven self-propelled artillery systems that can be fired from long range.

On Sunday, the leaders of the G7 nations will meet online to discuss support for Ukraine, further sanctions against Russia, and other issues. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also scheduled to take part in the talks.

The Russian military is stepping up its offensive in eastern Ukraine, ahead of the former Soviet Union's victory day over Nazi Germany on May 9.

Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu stressed on Wednesday that the country was expanding its control in the eastern provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk.

He claimed that Russia had already taken control of the eastern city of Mariupol and established peaceful civilian life.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly seeking to demonstrate his nation's achievements ahead of the May 9 anniversary.

But a senior US defense official said on Wednesday that Russia's military campaign has "largely stalled" in the face of fierce resistance from Ukraine.

In Mariupol, hundreds of civilians were still believed to be trapped in a steel plant besieged by the Russian forces.

In a video clip released on the Telegram messaging app the commander of Ukraine's Azov battalion described heavy bloodshed after Russian forces broke into the plant.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video message that 344 people were rescued from the city and its suburbs on Wednesday.

Zelenskyy added that women and children were still in Mariupol and at the steel plant, and that his country was negotiating their escape.

The European Union on Wednesday proposed a ban on Russian oil imports by the end of the year, as part of additional sanctions against Russia.

US President Joe Biden also said on Wednesday that his country was always open to additional sanctions. He said he would discuss further sanctions with other leaders from the Group of Seven nations this week.

The United Nations Security Council has issued a presidential statement expressing "strong support" for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

It was adopted unanimously on Friday by council members, including Russia. It is the first such statement adopted by all council members since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February.

Presidential statements are not legally binding, and the latest one does not mention Russia by name.

Mexico's UN Ambassador Juan Ramon De La Fuente, one of two envoys who drafted the statement, was asked by a reporter whether Russia was serious about seeking a diplomatic solution.

He said the unanimous adoption of the statement shows the Security Council is united in supporting the UN Secretary-General's effort to find a diplomatic solution. He called the statement an important first step for diplomatic efforts to end the war.

Guterres visited Russia and Ukraine last month. He agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United Nations would be involved in the evacuation of civilians from a besieged steel plant in Mariupol in eastern Ukraine.

Civilians were evacuated from the plant and surrounding areas this week.

The leaders of the European Union will visit Japan next week for a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio. One of the EU chiefs is also scheduled to visit the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima.

European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are set to meet with Kishida next Thursday.

The European Union said the summit is an opportunity "to display the increasingly deep and dynamic alliance between the EU and Japan" amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The leaders are also expected to discuss their response to China, which has been strengthening its ties with Russia, plus the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan, digital partnerships, and measures against climate change.

In recent years, the EU has increasingly emphasized human rights and the rule of law in its diplomacy. This tendency has grown since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The bloc apparently wants to strengthen its ties with Japan through the summit.

A senior EU official said Michel will visit the Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima and deliver a speech on Friday.

The Japanese beef bowl restaurant chain, Yoshinoya, refused to allow a university student to attend a recruitment event after assuming the student was a foreign national.

Yoshinoya Holdings says a recruiter canceled the student's online reservation for the event because personal information, such as home address and academic background, suggested the student was a foreign national.

The recruiter sent the student an email saying it was difficult for foreign nationals to obtain work visas and there was a chance the student would not be able to join the company even if offered a job.

Yoshinoya says it has given similar responses to other applicants it assumed were foreign nationals since around January of last year.

The company cited previous cases where it had to cancel job offers after foreign nationals were unable to obtain work visas.

Yoshinoya apologized, saying it should have explained the process more clearly to the student.

The incident comes after the company fired a managing director in April over derogatory remarks about women.

A powerful explosion at a hotel in Cuba's capital Havana has killed at least 22 people and injured more than 60 others.

Cuba's presidential office says a gas leak was the likely cause of the blast, which ripped through the Hotel Saratoga in Old Havana around 11 a.m. on Friday.

Footage shows some of the hotel walls collapsing as plumes of black smoke billow into the air. Surrounding buildings were also damaged by the force of the explosion.

The high-end hotel began operating about 90 years ago. According to its website, it closed temporarily in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Workers were busy making preparations for its reopening next Tuesday.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel visited the site of the explosion. He said authorities are investigating the cause, and rescue crews will continue to scour the rubble for any survivors who may be trapped.

Authorities in Sri Lanka have declared a state of emergency following more than a month of anti-government protests over a deepening economic crisis.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa issued the decree on Friday on public security grounds. The move gives him greater powers to detain people without warrants. He previously declared a state of emergency in April.

Police earlier fired tear gas at demonstrators who massed outside the parliament to demand the president resign.

The unrest is being fueled by drastic inflation and the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, which has taken a heavy toll on the tourism industry.

Dwindling supplies of fuel have resulted in power outages, and shortages of medicine are adding to the sense of anger.

Last month, a major rating agency downgraded Sri Lanka's foreign currency sovereign credit rating to "selective default."

The Sri Lankan government is seeking financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund, but the discussions could take time.
