US President Joe Biden arrived in Japan on Sunday after finishing his three-day trip to South Korea, where he visited the Korean Air and Space Operations Center at the US Air Force Base in Osan.

The center south of Seoul is tasked with commanding all aerospace operations by the US and South Korean militaries in the event of any contingency on the Korean Peninsula. South Korean media said Biden was the first US president to visit the center.

Biden said stability is indispensable not only for the Korean Peninsula but for the world.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol told the forces that the center symbolizes the bilateral alliance. He called it a crucial place where the two countries jointly deal with North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, which are growing more sophisticated.

Observers say the US and South Korea were apparently trying to signal Seoul's readiness to respond to Pyongyang's missile threats.

Earlier on Sunday, Biden brushed aside questions about any possible provocation by North Korea, saying, "We are prepared for anything North Korea does."

The leaders of Japan and the United States are expected to affirm their countries' close cooperation in the face of a severe international situation when they meet in Tokyo on Monday.

US President Joe Biden is due to arrive in Japan on Sunday on his first visit to the country since taking office.

Biden is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio the next day. He will also attend a summit of the Quad nations of Japan, US, Australia and India on Tuesday.

Kishida told reporters on Saturday that he wants to have frank in-person discussions with Biden. He mentioned security, regional situations including Ukraine, the economy, and common global challenges such as climate change and nuclear disarmament.

Kishida and Biden are expected to reaffirm their policy to continue to impose heavy sanctions on Russia and provide support for Ukraine, as well as calling on Asian and African nations for cooperation.

The two leaders are also expected to share the view that any unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force is unacceptable anywhere in the world, with China's growing activities in the East China Sea and its increasing economic coercion in mind. The leaders will likely affirm that the two countries will strengthen their deterrence and response capabilities.

Kishida and Biden are expected to confirm that their countries will work closely with South Korea in responding to North Korea, which is stepping up its nuclear and missile programs. The two will also likely discuss further provocations by the North in light of the latest situation.

Biden is expected to announce the start of talks for launching the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, or IPEF, during his stay in Japan. Kishida is making arrangements to express Japan's willingness to join.

Australia's Labor Party has toppled the governing conservatives in Saturday's general election. Local media outlets report that the country will see the first change in government in nine years.

Australia's public broadcaster ABC reported that as of 5 a.m. on Sunday local time, the Labor Party was projected to win 72 of 151 lower house seats, the conservative coalition 50 seats, and independents 15 seats.

Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese is expected to form a new government, with support from independents and others.

Albanese told supporters on Saturday night, "Tonight, the Australian people have voted for change. I am humbled by this victory and I'm honored to be given the opportunity to serve as the 31st prime minister of Australia."

Albanese announced that he plans to attend the so-called Quad summit in Tokyo on Tuesday. The leaders of Japan, the United States and India are scheduled to participate in the meeting.

Attention is now focused on how the next administration will confront China. Albanese has shown his intention to maintain the policy of the outgoing administration.

Current Prime Minister Scott Morrison has taken a tough stance toward Beijing, together with strengthening ties with the US and Japan.

Russian forces are poised to intensify their offensive in a bid to take full control of the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

The Russian defense ministry said on Saturday that its forces destroyed Ukrainian military weapons in the northwestern region of Zhytomyr using Kalibr cruise missiles.

Russia claimed that the weapons were delivered from Western countries and intended for Ukrainian troops in the two regions in the east.

Russia also said its missile attacks on a port in Odesa in the south destroyed fuel storage facilities for Ukrainian armored vehicles.

The Ukrainian military is fighting back. US think tank the Institute for the Study of War said on Friday that Russian forces are likely preparing for a major Ukrainian counteroffensive and a protracted conflict.

On Saturday, Finland's state-owned gas wholesaler Gasum said Russia has halted the supply of natural gas to the country. Russia's largest government-affiliated gas company Gazprom confirmed the cutoff.

The move came after Finland applied to join NATO. The electricity supply to Finland from Russia was stopped on May 14.

The Russian foreign ministry on Saturday released a list of 963 Americans who are barred from entering the country in retaliation for sanctions imposed by the United States.

The list includes US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and company executives. Biden and Blinken were banned from entering in March.

Russia announced on Friday it will increase the number of military units by the end of the year in its western military district, which borders European nations. Moscow said the plan is aimed at countering NATO.

Concerns are growing over the possibility of a global food crisis due to the Russian blockade of grain exports from Ukrainian ports as the invasion continues.

The president of a grain exporter in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa, which is home to the country's largest port, has told NHK that the volume of exports has fallen to around 10 percent of the usual level.

Alexander Polishchenko said his firm has exported wheat and other grains on container vessels to over 50 countries, including Japan.

Polishchenko said the Russian military had been conducting exercises involving missile launches in the Black Sea several months before the start of the invasion.

He told NHK that since the invasion began on February 24, about seven to 15 Russian vessels had gathered around the port, bringing port functions to a halt.

He said all the vessels in the port were barred from leaving. He added vessels that tried to set sail were bombarded or seized by Russian military vessels, with some towed to a port in Crimea.

Polishchenko said his firm has suspended direct exports for a while, and is trying to export goods via foreign ports by first transporting them by truck to countries such as Romania and Poland.

But he said the amount that could be transported would be far short of the level possible by sea, and even if railway transportation is included, it is not a solution.

He added hundreds of tons of wheat that cannot be exported remains in storage, leaving no space to store the next harvest, which is expected to start in about a month.

Polishchenko also said he heard that Russian mines are washing up on the beaches of Odesa almost every week.

He said this is an issue that will remain even after the war ends, suggesting it would not be easy to resume exports after the fighting is over.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again expressed his objection to Finland and Sweden joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson talked to Erdogan separately by phone on Saturday.

Finland and Sweden have maintained neutrality for many years but Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led them to change course.

They applied for NATO membership on Wednesday.

Turkey, a member, objected to their entry. Erdogan claims that the two countries harbor Kurdish militants who belong to organizations designated as terrorists by Turkey and the EU.

The Turkish president's office says that Erdogan told Andersson that the political, financial and weapon support to terrorist organizations should be brought to an end and that Sweden should take concrete and serious steps.

Andersson wrote in her twitter account that she looks forward to strengthening bilateral relations on "peace, security, and the fight against terrorism."

Niinisto termed the call "open and direct" in his twitter account and wrote that "Finland condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations."

All members need to approve any new entry to NATO. Turkey is the sole holdout.

The National Opera House of Ukraine in Kyiv has reopened for the first time in almost three months following the Russian invasion on February 24.

The theater in the capital city welcomed an audience for an opera program on Saturday.

It was made possible by the return of about 70 percent of its staff to Kyiv.

The theater can seat 1,000 people but the audience was limited to about 300 so that they can evacuate to an underground shelter if an air raid siren blares during a performance.

Tickets were sold out before Saturday for a popular comedy.

Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko told reporters before the performance that he is glad to see an opera being performed again as art is important for people not just to survive but to enjoy life even in a time of war.

Many in the audience were in military uniforms.

Among them was a doctor who said that he had kept on working to help wounded soldiers. He added that he wants to see peace prevail so that people can come to the theater with no fear.

Another member of the audience said she came to the opera to feel that she is alive and that she wants to be free of all the hardships caused by the war.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20220522_15/

The World Health Organization says 92 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in 12 countries.

The WHO said on Saturday that the 12 countries include Portugal, Spain and Britain.

It said 28 suspected cases have been also reported, and are under investigation.

Monkeypox is a viral disease normally limited to Africa. But since the start of this month, a series of cases have been reported in Europe and North America.

The WHO said the reported cases have no established travel links to an endemic area, and no associated deaths have been reported.

The organization says the number of confirmed cases may rise, as the investigations proceed.

Symptoms of monkeypox often clear up in about two to four weeks. But experts say infants, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems may become seriously ill.

The WHO is urging countries around the world to stay alert.
