Taiwan's defense ministry says the Chinese military has carried out an exercise simulating an attack on Taiwan's main island.

The ministry said on Saturday morning that Chinese military planes and ships conducted drills in and around the Taiwan Strait with some crossing the median line.

The ministry said its armed forces broadcast a warning and deployed aircraft and vessels to monitor the exercise while putting shore-based missiles on standby.

The median line is an unofficial buffer to help prevent accidental clashes between Chinese and Taiwanese forces.

But Chinese authorities have recently begun asserting that they do not recognize the line.

Taiwan's defense ministry says Chinese troops have crossed it every day since Wednesday.

On Friday, Chinese fighter jets reportedly made 30 sorties across the line into the Taiwan side.

Japan's foreign minister has condemned China's ballistic missile launches and again urged an immediate end to large-scale military drills near Taiwan.

Hayashi Yoshimasa was speaking at a session of foreign ministers of the East Asia Summit in Cambodia on Friday. The meeting involves the 10 ASEAN members, as well as Japan, China, the United States, Russia and other Asia-Pacific countries.

Hayashi said the firing of Chinese ballistic missiles into waters near Japan, including its exclusive economic zone, is a grave problem that threatens Japan's national security and the safety of its people.

He denounced China's actions as something that could seriously undermine peace and stability of the region and the world. He reiterated Japan's call for China to immediately halt its military exercises.

Other countries also expressed concerns about the tensions in and around the Taiwan Strait. Multiple participants made critical comments about China's actions.

Hayashi also touched on the repeated intrusions into Japan's territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands by Chinese government ships. He said China is ramping up activities that infringe on Japan's sovereignty in the East China Sea.

Japan controls the islands. The Japanese government maintains they are an inherent part of Japan's territory. China and Taiwan claim them.

Hayashi also expressed strong opposition to what he views as China's economic coercion in the region.

He also urged Russia to immediately stop its invasion of Ukraine. He said any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force cannot be tolerated anywhere in the world.

Japan's Foreign Ministry says that while Hayashi was delivering his speech, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov left the venue.

The meeting was followed by ministerial talks of the ASEAN Regional Forum, which was attended by officials from North Korea.

Hayashi explained that Japan's position remains unchanged in seeking the normalization of diplomatic ties with North Korea by solving a range of issues in a comprehensive manner. These include Pyongyang's abduction of Japanese nationals, and its nuclear and missile programs.

He urged North Korea to resume substantive talks with relevant countries toward the goal of complete denuclearization.

The White House has lodged a protest with China's ambassador to the United States in light of the Chinese military's massive drills near Taiwan.

Beijing launched the exercises following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan earlier this week.

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said on Friday that Ambassador Qin Gang was summoned the previous day.

Kirby said the US condemned the drills as "irresponsible and at odds with our long-standing goal of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

He also said, "We will not seek and do not want a crisis," but "at the same time, we will not be deterred from operating in the seas and skies of the Western Pacific, consistent with international law, as we have for decades supporting Taiwan and defending a free and open Indo-Pacific."

A Chinese official says the ambassador rejected the protest.

The official said the envoy condemned Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, and told White House officials that the US is the troublemaker.

People in Hiroshima are marking the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombing that devastated the city in the final days of World War Two. More than 3,000 people gathered on Saturday morning for an annual ceremony at the city's Peace Memorial Park.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and representatives from 98 countries attended the ceremony. The city did not invite representatives from Russia or Belarus due to the conflict in Ukraine.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres became the first UN chief to attend the event in 12 years.

Participants paused for a moment of silence at 8:15 a.m., the exact time the United States dropped the bomb on August 6, 1945. It killed about 140,000 people by the end of that year and exposed many more to harmful radiation.

Seventy-seven years on, the movement to abolish nuclear weapons is facing significant challenges. Russia is threatening to use them against Ukraine, and more countries are stressing the importance of relying on them as a deterrent.

In June, states that are parties to the UN nuclear ban treaty met for the first time. But the nuclear powers and countries that rely on them for deterrence do not support the treaty.

Divisions are also overshadowing the review conference of the non-proliferation treaty, which is taking place this month.

Hiroshima Mayor Matsui Kazumi delivered a peace declaration at Saturday's ceremony. He called on the leaders of nuclear powers to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the other Japanese city decimated by a nuclear bombing, and confront the horror of nuclear weapons.

The mayor of the Japanese city of Nagasaki has said his city must be the last to suffer the ravages of a nuclear attack, in a speech where he repeated his call for the eradication of nuclear weapons.

Taue Tomihisa on Friday addressed a review conference of the parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons at the UN headquarters in New York. He was speaking as a representative of the Mayors for Peace, a group of municipalities lobbying for the abolition of the weapons.

Taue said the survivors of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as hibakusha, continue to talk about their experiences in an effort to remind the world of the horrors of nuclear conflict.

Referring to Russia's threat to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine, Taue noted that all of the efforts of the hibakusha would be rendered worthless if a nuclear power acted in such a way.

He pointed out that the only way for mankind to avoid the risk of a nuclear conflict is to eliminate the weapons entirely, and he called on nuclear powers and other countries to work toward this goal.

The mayor expressed hope that the review conference will present a concrete path toward disarmament and non-proliferation.

Ukraine and Russia are trading accusations over shelling near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine's southeast.

Ukraine's state nuclear power company Energoatom and other parties say on Friday missiles hit a power line at the site, which has been under the control of Russian forces since March.

Officials with Energoatom said the power station is still operational and that it has not detected any radioactive leakage. It blamed Russia for the damage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia for the shelling. In a video message released on Friday, he said any attack on the plant is "an open, brazen crime" and "an act of terror."

The Russian defense ministry blamed the shelling on Ukrainian forces.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said on Monday that the situation at the plant is becoming more perilous by the day.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for the full implementation of a deal to resume shipments of Ukrainian agricultural products in talks with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The two leaders met on Friday in Sochi, southern Russia.

Turkey and the United Nations brokered the deal to resume exports from Black Sea ports last month. They had been stalled due to a Russian military blockade.

Putin said the problem was settled thanks to the involvement of both Erdogan and the UN Secretary-General.

A joint statement issued after the meeting stressed the need to fully implement the deal. And in what appears to be a warning against Western sanctions, it also called for the unimpeded delivery of Russian food and fertilizers to global markets.

There have been four shipments of Ukrainian grain under the deal. The first left on Monday, followed by three more on Friday.

Russia has established a new company to take over the Sakhalin-2 oil and liquefied natural gas project in the country's Far East.

Two Japanese trading houses are involved in the project. Mitsui & Company holds a 12.5 percent stake, and Mitsubishi Corporation has a 10 percent stake.

The Kremlin made the announcement on Friday. The new firm's name is Sakhalinskaya Energija. It's Russian for Sakhalin Energy, which is the name of the former operator.

Officials say it will be based in the Sakhalin region's main city, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, where the former operator was also headquartered.

They say Andrey Oleynikov, a senior official of Sakhalin Energy, will head the new firm.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order on June 30 to form a new company and transfer the assets of Sakhalin Energy.

The order also requires the project's foreign shareholders to notify Russia within a month from the launch of the new firm whether they wish to continue investing.

Putin signed a decree on Friday banning investors in "unfriendly" countries from selling shares in Russian firms until the end of the year.

The ban covers the Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project off the coast of Sakhalin Island. Japanese trading firms Itochu and Marubeni are involved.

US businesses are putting more and more people back to work. They hired new employees last month at a rate that beat market expectations.

The unemployment rate fell from 3.6 percent in June to 3.5 percent in July. That is the lowest figure since before the pandemic, in February 2020.

Workers are also seeing higher paychecks. The average hourly wage rose by 5.2 percent compared to last July.
