A bipartisan group of five US congressional lawmakers is in Taiwan. The trip comes less than two weeks after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan prompted China to react sharply.

The delegation, led by Senator Ed Markey, arrived in Taiwan by plane on Sunday.

Taiwan's foreign ministry says the legislators will meet President Tsai Ing-wen and other figures to discuss security, the economy and trade during their two-day stay.

The ministry said in a statement that the visit highlights Washington's strong support for Taiwan and demonstrates a friendship that is not afraid of China's threats.

Pelosi visited Taiwan on August 2 and 3, becoming the first incumbent US House speaker to travel there in 25 years.

China responded to her visit by staging days of large-scale military drills around Taiwan, including ballistic missile launches.

China has also continued to fly military aircraft over the median line in the Taiwan Strait every day even after the end of the exercises. The line is designed to prevent unintended military clashes between Taiwan and China.

Analysts say China may sharply react again to the US lawmakers' visit.

A bipartisan group of US congressional lawmakers has visited Taiwan and met with President Tsai Ing-wen.

The delegation led by Senator Ed Markey held talks in Taipei on Monday with Tsai, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and members of the Taiwan legislature's foreign affairs and defense committee.

Taiwan's presidential office said Tsai thanked the delegation on behalf of the people of Taiwan for traveling all the way there at this critical time and demonstrating its friendship with Taiwan.

In response, Markey said, "At this moment of uncertainty, we must do everything we can to maintain peace and stability for Taiwan."

He also said, "We have a moral obligation to do everything we can to prevent an unnecessary conflict."

The trip comes less than two weeks after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. She was the first incumbent speaker to do so in 25 years.

China responded by holding large-scale military drills around Taiwan, including ballistic missile launches.

Even after the exercises ended, Chinese military aircraft have been crossing the median line in the Taiwan Strait. The line is an unofficial buffer to prevent unintended military clashes between Taiwan and China.

Taiwanese officials welcomed the visit by the US lawmakers, calling it a demonstration of strong support by the US for Taiwan.

The officials only released recorded footage of the beginning of President Tsai's meeting with the US delegation.

Some observers say the unusual move is an attempt by Taiwan to avoid unnecessarily provoking China.

The Chinese military announced on Monday that it carried out exercises near Taiwan.

The announcement comes after a bipartisan group of five US congressional lawmakers, led by Senator Ed Markey, arrived in Taiwan on Sunday. A spokesperson for China's defense ministry said the exercises are a countermeasure against the visit.

The military's Eastern Theater Command, which covers the East China Sea, said it organized combat and other drills in the sea and airspace around Taiwan.

It added the exercises were "a stern deterrent to the United States and Taiwan continuing to play political tricks and undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters that the visit was made despite protests lodged by China. He said it is a violation of the "one-China principle" and has sent the wrong signal to separatist forces for Taiwan's independence.

Wang called on the United States to address issues surrounding Taiwan cautiously and appropriately.

He also said any attempt by a handful of US politicians and Taiwan independence forces to challenge the "one-China principle" will fail.

The Chinese military also held large-scale drills around Taiwan, including ballistic missile launches, following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan earlier this month.

A Myanmar court has sentenced the country's ousted de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi to six more years in prison after finding her guilty in four graft cases.

Myanmar's state-run media reported that the trial took place in the capital, Naypyitaw, on Monday.

She was convicted of renting public land at below market prices for a foundation in which she assumed a senior role, and other charges.

With this verdict, Aung San Suu Kyi has been given a total of 17 years in jail in the 10 cases brought against her since the military took power in a coup last year.

She had already been found guilty of sedition and other charges. The trials handing down one guilty sentence after another to the Nobel Peace Prize laureate are widely seen as an attempt by the military to remove her from politics for good.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has again stressed his strong intent to improve his country's ties to Japan, which are said to be at a post-World War Two low. He called for extensive bilateral cooperation.

Yoon was speaking at a ceremony outside the presidential office in Seoul on Monday to mark the anniversary of the Korean Peninsula's liberation from Japan's colonial rule on August 15, 1945.

He said, "Today, Japan is our partner as we face common threats that challenge the freedom of global citizens."

Yoon said he will uphold the spirit of the 1998 bilateral declaration by then President Kim Dae-jung and then Prime Minister Obuchi Keizo that called for a new, future-oriented partnership.

He said the governments and peoples of both countries, based on their mutual respect, must contribute to the peace and prosperity of the international community. He said that should be done through extensive cooperation in various areas, ranging from economic and security cooperation to social and cultural exchanges.

On historical issues with Japan, Yoon said, "When Korea-Japan relations move towards a common future and when the mission of our times aligns, based on our shared universal values, it will also help us solve the historical problems."

But he stopped short of specifically mentioning such pending issues as wartime labor and those referred to as comfort women.

A memorial ceremony has been held at a cemetery near Manila to mourn the people who died in the Philippines during World War Two. About half a million Japanese and 1 million Filipinos are estimated to have died there.

The Japanese Embassy organized the annual event on Monday, the day when Japan marks the end of the war. About 180 people, including Japanese expatriates in the country, attended. They observed a moment of silence before a monument and offered flowers.

The now defunct Japanese Imperial Army considered the Philippines as the frontline of defense for Japan in the final stage of the war. Japanese and US troops engaged in fierce ground battles. Local residents were caught in the crossfire.

One of the participants of the ceremony, Murakami Haruko, lost her father in the war. The 90-year-old said it is regrettable that many bereaved families were unable to come from Japan because of the coronavirus pandemic. She also said Japan and the Philippines need to maintain friendly relations.

Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko said Japan has won trust from the Philippines by keeping its promise to never again go to war. He added that Japan must continue to do so.

South Korea's foreign ministry released a statement on Monday expressing deep disappointment and regret over Japanese leaders repeatedly visiting and sending offerings to Yasukuni Shrine.

The statement says the shrine beautifies Japan's past war of aggression and enshrines war criminals.

It says Japanese leaders should face up to history and demonstrate their humble introspection and genuine self-reflection over it with action.

The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo issued a statement criticizing the visits and offerings to the shrine on the same day.

The statement urges Japan to stop glorifying a war of aggression and taking actions that distort historical perceptions.

It also calls on Japan to learn lessons from history and show its commitment to peaceful development with concrete actions.
