Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, who began his first visit to South Korea since he took office, laid flowers at a national cemetery in Seoul.

The cemetery houses graves of the country's past presidents and those who died in the Korean War.

Kishida and his wife Yuko, who arrived at a military airport outside Seoul shortly before noon on Sunday, laid flowers before a monument and offered a silent prayer.

Kishida is scheduled to meet with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol later on Sunday.

Kishida's visit is part of what the two countries call "shuttle diplomacy" he and Yoon agreed to resume in March. The leaders intend to pay mutual visits to strengthen bilateral ties.

Kishida is the first Japanese prime minister in 12 years to visit South Korea for summit talks.

The two leaders are expected to stay in close communication in order to speed up efforts toward better ties. They also plan to agree on boosting security cooperation to address issues including North Korea's nuclear and missile development.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has departed Tokyo for a 2-day visit to South Korea on Sunday. It will be the first time in 12 years a Japanese prime minister visits South Korea for bilateral summit talks.

Kishida is scheduled to meet with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol in the afternoon.

Before heading to Seoul, Kishida told reporters that he would like to exchange candid opinions with Yoon "based on their mutual trust" as a part of what the two countries call "shuttle diplomacy."

He added that they want to exchange ideas on global issues as he had invited Yoon to the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima to be held later this month.

The two leaders are expected to agree to increase security cooperation. The move is aimed at addressing issues, such as North Korea's nuclear and missile development programs.

The summit's agenda is also likely to include economic security cooperation in semiconductor production as well as export controls.

The leaders are also expected to share information on the implementation of a plan aimed at settling a wartime labor issue. The South Korean government created the plan.

Kisihda's trip comes after the prime minister made an agreement with Yoon during their meeting in Tokyo in March. The two leaders agreed to resume the kind of shuttle diplomacy some previous leaders engaged in.

Kishida will also use the trip to prepare for the G7 summit. Kishida and Yoon are planning to hold trilateral talks with US President Joe Biden during the event.

Ukraine's air force announced on Saturday that it downed a Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missile in the skies over the Kyiv region.

The air force says the missile was fired from Russian territory by a fighter jet and was downed on Thursday night.

It also noted it was the first time Ukraine's air defenders had shot down a Kinzhal. A photo of the Patriot air defense system was posted on Twitter, revealing that the system was used to take down the missile.

Ukraine has received Patriot surface-to-air defense systems from the United States and other Western countries.

Ukraine's air force had previously said it lacked defenses against Kinzhal missiles. It called the downing of the missile "a historic event."

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang met Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari of Pakistan and acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi of Afghanistan's Taliban interim government.

The three-way meeting took place on Saturday in Islamabad.

Pakistan's foreign ministry said that the discussion topics included counter-terrorism and trade. Qin's first official visit to Pakistan as foreign minister is seen as China's move to retain its influence in the region.

Qin also held a separate meeting with Muttaqi. According to China's foreign ministry, Qin told Muttaqi that China will continue to deepen bilateral cooperation with Afghanistan in various fields to help the country realize peace, stability, development and prosperity.

The international community is critical of the Taliban for their restriction of women's rights and other repressive measures. But observers say that China hopes to bring Afghanistan into its Belt and Road infrastructure initiative in an effort to expand its influence in the region.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is facing headwinds in his bid to remain in office for another term. Presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on May 14.

The race is widely seen as a head-on clash between Erdogan and Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the largest opposition party and a joint candidate of six opposition parties.

Erdogan has 20 years of experience as the country's prime minister and president. He last year mediated a deal to export Ukrainian farm products that had been stalled by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Kilicdaroglu highlights the plunge of Turkish currency, the lira, and rising prices under the current administration.
He also accuses the government of allowing the construction of buildings that did not meet quake-resistance standards, which added to the damage caused by major quakes that struck southern Turkey in February.

The opposition leader has vowed to improve Turkey's relations with Western nations that have soured since Erdogan assumed office.

Some of latest opinion polls show Kilicdaroglu leading Erdogan by a small margin. But other polls indicate that Erdogan has been catching up with his main challenger.

If none of the presidential candidates wins a majority, a run-off election will be held between the top two contenders on May 28.
