Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Hiroshima to attend the G7 summit. This is his first trip to Asia since Russia's invasion began in February last year.

The plane carrying Zelenskyy arrived in Hiroshima on Saturday afternoon. Japan's government says Zelenskyy will join G7 leaders at two sessions on Sunday -- one dealing directly with the war in Ukraine, the other an outreach session on global peace and stability that will include non-G7 leaders.

After he arrived, he posted a message on social media, saying "Japan. G7. Important meetings with partners and friends of Ukraine." He added, "Security and enhanced cooperation for our victory. Peace will become closer today."

He is also expected to meet one-on-one with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio. Ukraine's government has told local media that Zelenskyy will meet US President Joe Biden.

The second day of the summit is in full swing. The heads of eight invited countries and other representatives have joined the G7 leaders.

Kishida said, "I am very happy to welcome people from partner countries and international organizations to Hiroshima. At this session, I would like to discuss how we can take united responses to the complex crises facing the world."

Those challenges include the food crisis caused in part by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Energy security is also on the agenda at Saturday's meeting.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan says training of Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16 fighter jets will begin in the coming months.

Sullivan spoke to reporters on Saturday in the western Japanese city of Hiroshima where he is accompanying US President Joe Biden for the Group of Seven summit.

Sullivan said Biden informed the other G7 leaders of the US intention to train Ukrainian pilots.

The remarks came after White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby suggested on Friday that if Washington's European allies decide to provide the fighter jets, the US will respect their decisions.

Reporters asked Sullivan whether the Biden administration changed its stance, because the president had said in February that he had no plan to provide the fighters at the moment.

Sullivan replied that nothing has changed, adding that the US has provided Ukraine with weapons and training depending on the degree of emergency.

Asked about the possibility of escalating tensions with Russia, he said the capability Washington is going to provide Ukraine will not enable Kyiv to attack Russian territory.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, or ICAN, says a Group of Seven joint statement on nuclear disarmament fails to provide any concrete proposals to abolish nuclear weapons. It calls on countries to join the nuclear weapons ban treaty.

ICAN on Friday issued a statement in reaction to the G7 leaders' "Hiroshima Vision" statement released during their summit in western Japan.

ICAN says it welcomes the fact that the G7 meeting is being held in the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima, but that the group's statement fails to present credible steps toward actual disarmament.

The international NGO notes the G7 leaders say nuclear weapons "should only serve defensive purposes." But it says such weapons cannot be used defensively because they are "indiscriminate and disproportionate" as well as designed to "kill and injure on a massive scale."

ICAN adds that "not all G7 countries are transparent about the number of weapons they have," while some of them are increasing their stockpiles.

It says what is required from the G7 is "a concrete, actionable plan to engage all nuclear-armed states in disarmament talks."

The group calls on all nuclear states to take part in talks under the international framework established by the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons that took effect in 2021.

US President Joe Biden and the Republican Party have resumed their talks on the government debt ceiling after a temporary suspension on Friday.

Biden's Democratic administration wants to raise the limit on the amount of funds that the United States can borrow. Republicans say they will sign off on that only if Democrats agree to make large-scale spending cuts.

Officials from both sides continued talks during Biden's visit to Japan for the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima.

But a Republican lawmaker in charge of the negotiations told reporters on Friday that they decided to suspend the talks because they were not productive.

Media reports have quoted a White House official as saying that there is a large gap between the two sides.

Democrats and Republicans resumed discussions later on Friday, but the suspension of talks earlier that day highlighted that they remain at odds.

The US could see the first-ever default on its government bonds as early as next month if the two sides fail to reach an agreement. That possibility has stoked fears in financial markets.
