The European Union, Norway and Iceland on Thursday lifted all import restrictions on Japanese food products that had been implemented following the 2011 accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced the end of the import controls in a press release on Thursday.

The ministry says it welcomes the removal of the restrictions as it will boost reconstruction efforts in the areas affected by the nuclear disaster.

The EU had required certificates of origin and radiation screening for some marine products, edible wild plants and other items produced in Fukushima and nine other nearby prefectures.

Norway and Iceland had similar controls in place.

Switzerland is expected to end its measures on August 15.

The end of controls will mean no need for radiation screening and less paperwork. Japan hopes this will lead to an increase in food exports.

Nine countries and regions, including China, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, still have import measures in place for some Japanese food.

Japan's agriculture ministry says it will continue to call on them to end their measures.

More than 80 participants at a global scout jamboree in South Korea suffered heat exhaustion on Wednesday night as the country battled scorching temperatures.

About 43,000 scouts are taking part in the 25th World Scout Jamboree that opened in Buan on Tuesday.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol attended a ceremony on Wednesday evening.

The local fire department says a number of participants started complaining of dizziness and other symptoms of heat exhaustion after 10 p.m., and 83 of them received medical treatment.

South Korean media reported that while the temperature at the time was around 27 degrees Celsius, temperatures had risen to nearly 35 degrees during the day.

On Tuesday, about 400 participants at the jamboree received treatment for heat-related symptoms.

South Korean media said the organizers of the event were criticized for not taking adequate measures to protect the scouts from the heat.

A variety of colorful fireworks lit the night sky over Nagaoka City in central Japan as one of the country's most popular fireworks festivals opened on Wednesday.

The two-day Nagaoka Fireworks Festival started at 7:20 p.m. with the release of three white fireworks, carrying with them a wish for peace.

The long-standing event honors those who died in an air raid in 1945 and prays for recovery from a major earthquake that struck the area in 2004.

A large crowd gathered at the festival venue on the bank of Shinano River. They captured videos and applauded as they watched.

A segment called Phoenix was launched with the hope for restoration after the 2004 earthquake.

A woman from Chiba Prefecture who attended for the first time said she was very moved to see many fireworks dedicated to peace.

Another woman from Niigata City said she particularly loved the Phoenix fireworks and that it would become a good summer memory.
