Fighting has resumed in eastern Ghouta, an opposition stronghold near the Syrian capital of Damascus. A human rights group says 85 people have been killed there in the past 2 days.

Anti-government forces say President Bashar al-Assad's administration used chemical weapons. Syrian state-run media have dismissed this as a fabrication.

Government forces have taken control of more than 90 percent of the area.

There had been a period of calm following negotiations between the Army of Islam, the last remaining group of opposition fighters, and Russia, which backs the Syrian government. But fighting resumed on Friday.

Government forces continued airstrikes on Saturday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 70 civilians have died so far. Some of those killed or injured reportedly suffered breathing difficulties.

15 people were also reported dead from bombing by the Army of Islam in Damascus.

The Assad administration appears ready to send ground troops in a bid to take full control of eastern Ghouta. There are increasing fears that street fighting may lead to further civilian casualties.

NHK has learned that a trilateral summit in Japan, with China and South Korea, is in the final planning stage.

Japanese and Chinese government sources say arrangements are aiming for May 9th.

The last such meeting was held in South Korea 3 years ago. Japan, as the chair, has been trying to resume the talks.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is expected to visit Japan to attend the summit, for the first time since he assumed the post 5 years ago.

Li is also likely to hold separate talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The 2 leaders are expected to conclude an official agreement on an emergency communications mechanism designed to prevent an accidental collision at sea or in the air.

Arrangements are also being made for a meeting between Li and Japanese Emperor Akihito.

India has promised greater support to its neighbor Nepal in a meeting between their prime ministers.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, in India's capital, New Delhi on Saturday.

In a news conference that followed, they announced India will help Nepal to develop its infrastructure. Areas for development include hydro-power generation plants, railways linking the 2 countries. India will also help Nepal in defense and agriculture.

Modi said he was ready to lend any assistance to Nepal in its quest for prosperity and development.

Oli responded that he would like to call for further cooperation for his country's future development.

India, which has had historical ties with Nepal, has been providing economic support, but China is increasing its presence through its Belt and Road economic initiative.

Oli was at odds with India when he previously served as prime minister, and tried to build ties with China.

India is believed to be attempting to rebuild its relationship with Oli.

Seven people have died in 4 US military aviation crashes since Tuesday.

The US military announced that 2 soldiers were killed in a training flight of an Apache attack helicopter at Fort Campbell on the Kentucky-Tennessee border on Friday night.

The incident follows a crash of a Marine CH-53 helicopter in California on Tuesday that killed 4 Marines. The pilot of an F-16 fighter died when the jet crashed at an air base in Nevada on Wednesday.

There was also a nonfatal mishap involving a Marine AV-8B Harrier jet that crashed in Djibouti in east Africa on Tuesday.

The latest incident follows Thursday's statement by Marine Lieutenant General Kenneth McKenzie, director of the Joint Staff, that the situation is not normal, but that he was not prepared to say that it is some kind of crisis.

CH-53 helicopters and F-16 fighter jets are currently deployed at US military bases in Japan.

A company that matches freelance workers with employers estimates that 7 million 440,000 people in Japan have second jobs.

The figure has risen by 2 million 110,000 from 3 years ago.

The firm, Lancers, surveyed over 3,000 people in February.

It estimates that one million 650,000 people with second jobs are writing online articles or entering data, while one million 370,000 are doing sales or planning work.

The government is encouraging companies to allow employees to have second jobs as part of its work-style reforms.

But the Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, is taking a cautious stance on the issue. It says there is a risk that sensitive corporate information could be leaked.

Volunteers in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward have painted a construction site hoarding to discourage vandals from drawing graffiti on it.

Art university students and others put the finishing touches to the work on panels stretching a total of about 200 meters at Miyashita Park on Sunday.

A non-profit group launched the project in February. The painting sends the message that Shibuya is trying to be a city for all kinds of people.

It tells the story of a girl who loses her pet dog while taking it for a walk in Shibuya. She eventually finds it with the help of many people, including LGBT and handicapped individuals.

One person taking part said the project is a precious experience and will hopefully contribute to the local community.
