Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in have discussed the details of Friday's inter-Korean summit.

The 2 leaders held phone talks for about 40 minutes from 10 AM on Sunday. Moon told Abe that he had conveyed Japan's stance on giving priority to resolving the issue of the Japanese nationals abducted by the North.

Abe also had phone talks with US President Donald Trump on the same topic on Saturday.

Abe welcomed the inclusion of denuclearization in the joint statement, and said he expects concrete action from the North.

He said Japan will do what it can to help, and he wants to continue working closely with South Korea and the United States.

Moon responded that he took up the abduction issue in his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as Abe had requested.

Abe and Moon agreed to work together to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

Abe also welcomed the news that North Korea will close its nuclear test site by the end of May.

He said he expects the North to take concrete steps towards disposing of all weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles in a complete, verifiable and irreversible way.

The 2 leaders agreed to work closely with the United States on the preparations for the US-North Korean summit, and to persuade the North to take concrete action to settle various issues, including the abductions and its nuclear and missile programs.

They also agreed to hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of next month's trilateral summit of Japan, South Korea, and China.

A Canadian patrol aircraft was seen landing at the US Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan on Saturday.

Japan's Defense Ministry says the United States and other countries will start monitoring North Korea's illicit ship-to-ship transfers of goods with foreign vessels at sea to evade UN Security Council sanctions.

An NHK camera captured the Canadian plane touching down around 10:30 AM.

Sources say it is one of the military aircraft the Defense Ministry said Australia and Canada will dispatch to the base.

The US military will play a leading role in coordinating the operation, which is aimed at pressuring the North to denuclearize.

It is extremely rare for multiple non-Japanese forces to operate from Japan.

Municipalities surrounding the base have expressed concerns about a possible increase in noise, and plan to call an emergency meeting to discuss measures.
