Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he and US President Donald Trump will continue working closely together to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

The pair dined at Trump Tower in New York for more than 2 hours on Sunday. They are scheduled to meet again later this week.

Abe told reporters that he and Trump agreed to boost the momentum created by the US-North Korea summit in June.

Abe said that before setting off to the US, he listened to the wishes of the families of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea. He conveyed their messages to Trump.

Abe said the next step is to meet directly with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to discuss the abduction issue. He added he is determined not to miss any opportunity to settle it as soon as possible.

Abe also said he and Trump held constructive talks on bilateral trade and investment. They plan to further those discussions on Thursday.

Japan's Economic Revitalization Minister Toshimitsu Motegi will meet with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Tuesday.

The Trump administration has expressed eagerness to engage with Japan on a free trade agreement. It wants to reduce the US trade deficit.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says he will use the current UN General Assembly meetings to confirm that sanctions on North Korea will remain in effect until the country is denuclearized.

In an interview aired by Fox News on Sunday, Pompeo discussed the joint declaration signed by the leaders of the 2 Koreas last week. The document says the North is ready to dismantle the Nyongbyon nuclear facility if the US takes reciprocal actions.

Pompeo said the economic sanctions have caused North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to "come as far as he has come to date."

He said the sanctions are the "driving force to achieve the outcome" the US administration is looking for.

Pompeo also said the UN Security Council will not reduce those sanctions until "final" denuclearization is achieved.

He plans to take up the sanctions at a ministerial-level UN Security Council session that he will chair on Thursday.

Japan's national security adviser will visit China on Tuesday to prepare for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's upcoming visit. Abe is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October.

The head of Japan's National Security Secretariat, Shotaro Yachi, is scheduled to hold talks with China's Political Bureau member Yang Jiechi. Yang is a top Chinese Communist Party official in charge of foreign relations.

Yachi wants to raise topics expected to be taken up by the 2 leaders. He will also bring up the process of denuclearization in North Korea following last week's inter-Korean summit.

Abe and Xi met in Vladivostok in Russia's Far East earlier this month, where they agreed to commit to reciprocal visits.

The United States has slapped its largest-ever round of tariffs on imports from China.

President Donald Trump's administration imposed a 10-percent levy on $200 billion of Chinese goods on Monday.

The targets include food, electrical appliances and other everyday items. Along with earlier sets of tariffs, about half of Chinese imports are now subject to US sanctions.

Beijing hit back with new tariffs on $60 billion of US goods, including liquefied natural gas. This brings more than 70 percent of imports from the US under retaliatory duties.

China has chosen to act despite a threat from Trump to impose tariffs on almost all Chinese imports if the country takes retaliatory measures.

US President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee has been slapped with another allegation of sexual misconduct.

The New Yorker magazine in its online edition on Sunday posted an article in which a second woman comes forward with an allegation against Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

She says Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her while they were both in university by forcing her to touch part of his body at a dorm party.

Kavanaugh released a statement totally denying the allegation, calling it a smear and saying the event from 35 years ago did not happen.

The development comes as the US Senate is set for a public hearing on Thursday over the earlier allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a woman when he was a teenager.

The Democrats are urging the FBI to investigate the latest incident.

Trump continues to stand behind his nominee, but the scandal is expected to deal a blow to the president ahead of the midterm elections in November.

Delegates from major oil-producing nations have agreed to continue working to boost output. They are trying to dispel concerns about possible supply shortages stemming from US economic sanctions against Iran.

Representatives from member nations of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, and non-OPEC countries such as Russia, gathered in Algeria on Sunday.

The delegates said oil producers have failed to achieve the output increase target they agreed in June.

Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih, who chaired the meeting, told reporters that countries with spare capacity will deal with possible supply shortages.
He added that Saudi Arabia can increase output by 1.5 million barrels per day.

The delegates agreed to maintain the output share of Iran, an OPEC member. Tehran was concerned that the organization may cut its production share if other nations compensate for its reduced output.

But whether a crude price increase can be curbed remains unclear as there are no substantial plans for which countries will raise output, or by how much.

The United States is urging other nations to suspend crude imports from Iran by November as part of its economic sanctions.

Crude production in Iran fell 150,000 barrels per day last month. Concern is rising that Iranian output may drop further, causing supply shortages.

The speculation has kept global crude prices high. Gasoline prices in Japan are at their highest level in 3 years and 9 months.
