US President Donald Trump says his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will take place after the November 6th US midterm elections.

Trump told reporters on a flight to a political rally in the state of Iowa that the meeting will "be after the midterms" and that he "just can't leave now."

Trump disclosed earlier on Tuesday that several locations had been shortlisted for the second summit.

He said he likes Kim and Kim likes him, adding that their relationship is good.

Trump said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo briefed him on his meeting with Kim in Pyongyang. He said Pompeo had very good talks with Kim.

Pompeo agreed with Kim on Sunday that the 2 sides will try to hold the second summit as soon as possible.

Trump said they are talking about 3 or 4 locations, but it probably will not be Singapore, where the first summit was held.

Although arrangements seem to be progressing, officials need to narrow differences over the North's denuclearization process and other issues before the leaders meet again.

North Korea's ruling party has called for unity and economic revival under leader Kim Jong Un on the 73rd anniversary of its founding.

The Korean Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun ran a front-page editorial on Wednesday urging efforts to make every member of the party believe firmly that there is no other highly respectable leader than Kim Jong Un.

The paper also urged North Koreans to do their best to achieve goals set by the 5-year economic construction plan adopted at the party's congress in 2016.

Rodong Sinmun and other North Korean state-run media have not mentioned nuclear issues or a planned second summit with the US in reports on the party founding anniversary.

On the same day last year, Rodong Sinmun boasted about the country's nuclear and military prowess and was notably hostile toward the US.

This year, media have softened their tone following Kim's declaration of denuclearization.

Voter registration in the US increased dramatically after pop singer Taylor Swift announced plans to support the Democratic Party in November's midterm elections.

Swift posted a message on Instagram on Sunday saying she will vote for Democratic candidates and urged fans to register. The singer-songwriter has more than 100 million followers on Instagram.

A non-profit election advocacy group says 240,000 people signed up to vote within 48 hours of Swift posting the message.

The number easily surpasses 190,000, the total number of people who registered to vote during the month of September.

A spokesperson for the advocacy group expressed gratitude to Swift for the surge in registrations.

US President Donald Trump is trying to garner support from young voters through popular rapper Kanye West. Trump has invited West, a vocal supporter of his, to the White House on Thursday.

Trump said on Tuesday that West is a "smart guy" who sees that his administration has created jobs for African-Americans, Hispanics and Asians.

West and Swift are widely known to be embroiled in a high-profile feud. Public interest is mounting over how the musicians' activities could influence the outcome of the election.

Japan's foreign and defense ministers met with their Australian counterparts on Wednesday. They affirmed closer security coordination between the 2 countries amid China's growing maritime presence.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya were hosted by Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defense Minister Christopher Pyne in Sydney, Australia.

Payne emphasized the importance of bilateral ties, adding that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Darwin next month. The trip will include a bilateral summit with the 2 countries' leaders discussing cooperative ties and other shared issues.

Kono responded that Australia is a special strategic partner, sharing values and interests with Japan. He said Japan hopes to play a key regional role with Australia in promoting its "free and open Indo-Pacific" strategy.

During the meeting, the 4 ministers reaffirmed the close coordination of security policies, not only between the 2 countries but also with the United States.

They confirmed that the 2 countries will cooperate over North Korea's alleged evasion of UN sanctions and prevent illegal ship-to-ship transfers of energy supplies to Pyongyang.

They also noted that the issue of the abductions of Japanese nationals by the North should be resolved.

Japan has lodged a protest through diplomatic routes with Russia over its planned firing drills in waters near the island of Etorofu. Japan claims the island as part of its Northern Territories.

Russia's government told Japan's Foreign Ministry on Monday that the drills will start on Wednesday and continue through Saturday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters on Wednesday that the exercises could lead to a Russian military build-up on the 4 islands that include Etorofu.

Russia controls the islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.

Suga said the planned Russian military drills are incompatible with Japan's position.

He said that to fundamentally solve such a problem, it's necessary to settle the territorial issue itself.

He added that the government will persistently continue negotiations with Russia based on its policy, settling the issue of the islands' sovereignty first, and will then sign a peace treaty.

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen has criticized what she describes as China's unilateral efforts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

Tsai spoke in Taipei on Wednesday at celebrations for Taiwan's Double Ten National Day.

Tsai said the people of Taiwan will never accept any attempt by external forces to unilaterally change the status quo in the strait.

She added that the international community will never approve of or support the violation of universal values.

Tsai was referring to China's efforts to pressure countries to cut off diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Tsai said she is once again calling on the authorities in Beijing to play a positive role in the region and the world as a responsible major power, instead of being a source of conflict.

She stressed that her administration will never act rashly to escalate confrontation, give in to pressure, or sacrifice Taiwan's sovereignty.

Tsai's administration is increasingly wary of China's attempts to divide Taiwan's public opinion by offering favorable treatment for Taiwanese businesses and students that move to China, while stepping up diplomatic and military pressure.

A deep sea-vessel will collect rock samples from about 5,200 meters beneath the seabed near a possible focus of a mega-quake in the Pacific off the western Japan coast.

The vessel, Chikyu, left a port in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, on Wednesday to launch the mission. Researchers from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo and others are on board.

This is the 13th expedition for the group to conduct drilling near the Nankai Trough off the coast of Wakayama Prefecture since the project began 11 years ago.

The vessel has reached 3,058 meters below the sea floor in the past. It is scheduled to drill to 5,200 meters below the seabed, its deepest level ever, at about 75 kilometers off the coast.

For the first time, the researchers plan to collect rock samples from the land-based tectonic plate near the Nankai Trough. They will examine the types of rock and use the results to analyze the extent where the bedrock could resist a possible warping created along the boundary between plates.

Along the trough, a burst of pressure that has been built up when the Pacific Ocean tectonic plate sinks below the land-based plate is believed to trigger a giant quake.

The researchers are also considering planting pressure observation equipment inside the hole of drilling to boost the accuracy of quake predictions.

Shinichi Kuramoto of the JAMSTEC said they are looking forward to collecting samples that will help solve the quake mechanism and turning a new page in science.

The vessel will return to the port next March.

The International Olympic Committee has decided that a team of refugee athletes will be formed for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

IOC members unanimously endorsed the creation of the team at a session in the Argentine city of Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

The refugee team will be formed for the second consecutive Summer Games, following the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The IOC will bear the full cost of forming the team. It has already identified a pool of more than 50 refugee athletes from around the world.

The IOC will select the team members by examining how well the candidates meet the conditions for competing in the Olympics.

IOC President Thomas Bach said he hopes the refugee team will remind the world of the tough situations in conflict areas.

He said he also hopes the team will serve as an opportunity for people to consider the meaning of helping athletes who have been forced to flee from their homes.

The IOC members also approved 3 candidate cities for hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics. They are Canada's Calgary, Sweden's Stockholm and an Italian joint bid by Cortina D'Ampezzo and Milan.

The IOC will select the host city at a session scheduled to be held in the Swiss city of Lausanne in June.

Food producers and buyers from around the world have gathered at a trade show near Tokyo at a time when Japanese food makers are working to boost their exports.

One of the highlights at this year's show is the latest offerings of Japanese snacks.

Traditional products made from rice and konnyaku tubers are low in calories and have been gaining popularity among health-conscious consumers overseas.

Officials from a major snack food manufacturer are pitching their rice crackers.

A company official says they have improved the packaging so the product stays fresh for a longer period of time, making it easier to ship.

The Japanese government has set a goal of boosting food exports to almost 9 billion dollars by next year.
Growing shipments of processed items are adding to the optimism.

Organizers say the number of companies participating in this year's show has nearly doubled to 600 from last year when the event was first held. The exhibition continues until Friday.
