Hong Kong's chief executive says she plans to suspend a proposed bill that would allow criminal suspects to be sent to mainland China.

Carrie Lam made the announcement at a news conference on Saturday.

The bill has triggered a backlash from Hong Kong residents, including a major protest rally last Sunday.
The organizers say more than one million people took part.

Another large protest is scheduled for Sunday.

The Hong Kong government had insisted that it would go ahead with the law revision.

Observers say the Hong Kong government apparently wanted to avoid further chaos.

Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan says the United States is focused on building an international consensus over attacks on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

The US blames Iran for the acts. The US military earlier released a video it says shows Iran's Revolutionary Guards removing an unexploded mine from one of the ships.

Shanahan told reporters at the Defense Department on Friday that National Security Advisor John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo share the goal.

He underscored the importance of the Strait of Hormuz as a vital waterway for global oil shipments.

Shanahan added the US will declassify more information so it can be shared.

Pentagon officials meanwhile told NHK that Iranian vessels are blocking the towing of the Norwegian-owned Front Altair, one of the two damaged tankers.

Iran has flatly denied the US allegations.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has asked his Russian counterpart to urge the leaders of seven Asian nations to support his country in its fight against pressure from the United States.

Rouhani met Vladimir Putin in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek on Friday. Iran is apparently trying to gain support from some Asian nations with Russia's help.

Putin was visiting Kyrgyzstan to attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, whose eight member states include Russia, China and India. Rouhani attended the meeting as Iran has observer status.

Rouhani told Putin that Iran is facing strong pressure because of economic sanctions and needs cooperation from countries in the region.

Earlier in the day, Putin expressed concern about the situation in Iran. In an apparent warning to the United States, he said the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Tehran makes the regional situation unstable and destroys the international arrangement for nuclear nonproliferation.

The member nations then adopted a joint declaration upholding their support for the Iran nuclear deal.

Russia and Iran have been strengthening military ties in recent years as both nations support the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country's civil war.

The Group of 20 Energy and environment ministers began two-day talks in central Japan on Saturday.

The meeting in the town of Karuizawa is being chaired by Japan's industry minister Hiroshige Seko and Environment Minister Yoshiaki Harada.

At the outset of the meeting, Seko said efforts to tackle climate change are gathering momentum but it is crucial for the global economy that energy supplies remain stable.

Seko said the world needs policies that can realize those different values at the same time.

Harada said that in order to deal with global environmental issues, it is essential to achieve a positive cycle between environmental protection and economic growth.

On the first day, participants are expected to discuss energy security, following attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

The ministers are also scheduled to take up the issues of ocean pollution and plastic waste.

Japan plans to propose a framework to report and share progress on plastic waste reduction measures. The proposal is aimed at encouraging countries to make voluntary efforts.

The ministers are expected to issue a joint statement on the second and final day on Sunday.

Japanese Industry minister Hiroshige Seko says the government plans to ban retailers from giving away plastic bags for free from next April.

A meeting of energy and environment ministers from G20 nations kicked off in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan on Saturday. Seko said ocean pollution caused by plastic waste is a global issue that needs to be tackled both by public and private sectors.

He said the government will work to quickly decide what type of plastic bags and raw materials should be banned, and also consider measures to protect small and mid-sized businesses.

This is the first time the start date for the ban has been mentioned since the government announced a strategy for recycling plastic last month.

The industry ministry wants to implement the measure by revising ministerial ordinances, and plans to work out the details with other relevant ministries.

A developing low-pressure system is expected to bring extremely stormy weather to all parts of Japan over the weekend.

Officials at the Meteorological Agency warn of possible landslides, strong winds, and flooding in low-lying areas.

They say warm, humid air moving toward a low-pressure system has caused rain clouds to form above a large area of the nation's Pacific side.

The low-pressure pattern is expected to move through western parts of the country to the Japan Sea on Saturday, making atmospheric conditions unstable over wide areas, including eastern Japan.

Strong winds and localized downpours are expected in eastern and western Japan on Saturday. The rain and wind will intensify in the north through Sunday.
