Police in Osaka Prefecture say an officer was stabbed at a police box and his loaded gun stolen. The area is under tight security ahead of the G20 summit later this month.

A 26-year-old police officer, Suzunosuke Kose, has been taken to hospital in serious condition.

Investigative sources say three officers were on duty in the city of Suita on Sunday morning. Two of them were out investigating a possible theft.

Security camera footage shows a suspicious-looking man walking around the police box about an hour before the incident. The sources say the officer was likely stabbed while his colleagues were out.

A witness said, "I saw a man on the ground bleeding. A police officer was nearby helping him.

One of neighbors said, "An event at my kid's kindergarten was canceled because of the incident. The children have to stay indoors. It's really scary."

Police say the suspect appears to be in his 30s and between 170 and 180 centimeters tall. They discovered images of someone who may be the same man on security camera footage of a nearby hotel. He apparently checked in on Friday and left on Saturday.

They say the stolen gun was loaded with five bullets and are advising residents to be alert. Nearby schools and colleges have suspended activities planned for Sunday. Citizens have been urged to stay indoors.

The head of the Osaka Prefectural Police headquarters, Takahisa Ishida said," It is extremely regrettable that a police officer's gun has been taken. Osaka police are making every effort to arrest the culprit as soon as possible."

Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said if the suspect isn't caught by Monday morning public schools in the area will be closed.

Police boxes have been the target of several recent attacks. Last year, a man stabbed an officer in the city of Toyama and used his gun to kill a security guard at a nearby school. In September, a man killed an officer in Sendai before being shot dead by police.

The police officer who was stabbed in Osaka Prefecture early Sunday morning remains unconscious.

Police say the officer's loaded gun was stolen. They are searching for the attacker and are calling on people to stay inside and lock their doors.

26-year-old Suzunosuke Kose was found by staff from a nearby train station with a kitchen knife in the left side of his chest at around 5:30 a.m. in front of Senriyama police box in the city of Suita.

Police say he had multiple stab wounds and that a hook to prevent officers' guns being stolen was unlatched.

Investigators say three officers were on duty overnight but two were called away to respond to a telephone call about a theft nearby.

They suspect Officer Kose was attacked when he was about to leave.

They say the call came from a public phone and was likely a hoax.

Surveillance camera footage shows a man, apparently in his 30s and wearing a dark top, white tee shirt, and dark pants, loitering around the police box.

They are investigating the case as a robbery and attempted murder.

Saudi Arabia's crown prince has accused Iran of being involved in Thursday's attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, south of the Strait of Hormuz.

The country's state-run newspaper quoted Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as saying the Iranian regime did not respect the Japanese prime minister's visit to Tehran and responded to his efforts by attacking two tankers while he was there, one of which was Japanese.

He said the attacks prove that Iran is destabilizing the region, either directly or indirectly, and that Iran is at a crossroads in deciding whether to be an ordinary country that cooperates with the international community or continuing to be a rogue state.

He said his kingdom does not want a war in the region but it will not hesitate to deal with any threats to its people, its sovereignty or its vital interests.

Saudi Arabia is an ally of the United States, which also blames the attacks on Iran.

The United States is working to convince other countries that Iran attacked two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday.

Iran flatly denies the allegation, and is calling on other nations to support its position.

The United States released a video that it says provides evidence of Iranian involvement in the attacks.

Britain also concluded that it is almost certain that a branch of the Iranian military - the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps -- attacked the two tankers.

The United States says it will release more evidence, and is trying to build a consensus to put further pressure on Iran.

Iran says it summoned the British Ambassador to Tehran on Saturday to lodge a protest over what it called unfounded allegations.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of a regional security summit in Kyrgyzstan on Friday and Saturday to seek support.

Japan's foreign minister has asked his Mongolian counterpart for help in resolving the issue of Japanese nationals kidnapped by North Korea.

Taro Kono and Damdin Tsogtbaatar held talks in Ulaanbaatar. Kono is the first Japanese Foreign Minister to visit Mongolia in nine years. The nation has longstanding friendly ties with North Korea.

Kono told Tsogtbaatar that Japan would like a summit with North Korea and has no preconditions for the meeting.

Tsogtbaatar showed his understanding of Japan's stance and agreed to cooperate.

The two ministers agreed on the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council's sanctions to make Pyongyang abandon its nuclear and missile programs.

North Korea launched short-range missiles last month.

Kono said in a joint press release that Japan will continue to stand with the people of Mongolia.

He expressed hope that the two countries will further boost their strategic partnership.

Key words : Japan G20 meeting framework
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20190616_14/

Japan has used the G20 meeting to propose setting up an international framework for cooperative research into how to dispose of high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants.

The Group of 20 energy and environment ministers are in the town of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, for the second and final day of their meeting.

Japan's industry minister, Hiroshige Seko, chaired a session on energy in the morning. He brought up the idea of the international framework.

He said it is important to share experience and knowhow to accelerate efforts to solve a common issue for countries that use nuclear energy.

Many countries have found it difficult to draw up concrete plans for final waste disposal.

Only Sweden and Finland have decided on disposal sites.

Many nations, including Japan, have not even begun studying potential sites.

The proposal calls for countries to share what they are doing regarding the selection of disposal sites and to promote cooperation and the exchange of human resources.

The first meeting on the framework is planned for October in France.

Ministers are expected to issue a joint statement on Sunday after the conclusion of the G20 meeting.
