In the Tokyo gubernatorial election, polling stations across the capital have just closed, but it already appears the incumbent, Koike Yuriko, has secured a second term as Governor.

NHK is projecting the win, based on exit polls and information collected before the vote.

Koike faced 21 contenders in a campaign that focused heavily on the coronavirus pandemic.

She ran as an independent.
But some members of the nation's ruling coalition parties effectively backed the veteran politician.

Koike became the first woman to lead Japan's capital four years ago.

It was not the first time Koike broke through the glass ceiling, having served as Japan's first female Defense Minister during an eight-term career in the lower house.

Flooding in parts of southern Japan caused by torrential rain has inundated many residential areas. Authorities say over 15 people have no vital signs and others are missing.

A band of cloud hung over southern Japan on Saturday, dumping rain on Kumamoto Prefecture although the downpour has eased for now.

The Kuma River has overflowed in more than 10 places. 14 people have been found without vital signs at a nursing home for the elderly in a flooded area.

Three people elsewhere are also without vital signs while officials have confirmed one death.

They are still unable to make contact with a further seven people.

Rescuers trying to reach stranded residents are facing blocked roads.

Many people are seeking shelter at evacuation centers.

A woman said, "It wasn't like normal rain. I honestly never imagined it could be so powerful."

A man said, "The smell of the river and the muddy water was intense. I could feel the vibrations from the churning water through the road next to the riverbank."

The Japanese government is sending some 10,000 Self-Defense Force members to the region, and the Disaster Management Minister will also head to affected areas.

Forecasters warn the weather front is set to linger until around next Wednesday with more heavy rain expected.

They say there's a risk of flooding in low-lying areas, overflowing rivers, lightning strikes, and sudden gusts of wind.

Spanish authorities have locked down an area in the northeastern region of Catalonia as the number of coronavirus cases is rising there.

Catalonian officials announced on Saturday that an area in Lleida county with about 200,000 people would be locked down on the day, and exit and entry would be restricted to those who go there for essential purposes, such as work.

A gathering with more than 10 people is also banned.

The officials say the virus has spread at farms and nursing care facilities for the elderly in the area. On Thursday alone, 128 new cases were confirmed.

Local media have quoted a doctor at a local hospital as saying that beds for coronavirus patients are almost fully occupied.

Spain began to accept travelers from countries within the European Union in June.

In addition, the country began to accept tourists from 12 non-EU countries on Saturday.

The authorities are on the alert for a possible resurgence of infections.

One of Spain's most famous landmarks, the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona, has reopened its doors to visitors after nearly four months of closure due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The doors of the basilica, which was designed by architect Antoni Gaudi, were opened for the first time in 114 days on Saturday to a limited number of people. They include doctors, nurses and their families, as well as workers at NGOs and shop owners who have been on the frontlines of the city's battle against the coronavirus.

One doctor expressed her gratitude, saying the invitation was like a gift to her for her months of effort.

There are plans to expand access to all residents of Barcelona later this month, but it has not been decided when to allow visitors from outside the city.

Spain is once again accepting tourists, mainly from other European nations, ahead of the summer travel season. The challenge is to rebuild the country's tourism industry while preventing a resurgence of infections.

Pubs have reopened in England with strict social distancing rules after three months of coronavirus lockdown.

Britain shut down pubs, which are traditionally part of the British lifestyle, in late March amid the spread of the coronavirus.

People began to appear at a pub on the outskirts of London shortly after noon on Saturday, drinking beer and chatting with friends.

Inside the pub, people are allowed to move only along one-way paths and drink at tables placed one meter apart. They need to place orders with an online ordering system.

Customers also need to register their phone numbers and other private information to be traced should the virus be detected within the establishment.

Pubs and restaurants in Leicester, central Britain, will remain closed longer than initially planned as coronavirus infections are surging again.

Chief Executive of the Beer and Pub Association Emma McClarkin said pub owners are working together to make sure that they are keeping their staff and customers safe, but that they are also saving the institution as businesses and jobs in the United Kingdom.
